2 The Oasis Game FairGround, as part of the Oasis Holland movement, brought this Brazilian method for bottom-up community development to Holland in 2010 with support of Oxfam s e-motive program for reversed development work. This method that s been build by instituto Elos in the last 10 years is successful in creating ownership over shared spaces through co-creation and playfulness. The oasis game is a Brazilian method that is used to mobilize a community to realize their dreams which is mostly expressed in a physical (urban) result, the oasis, in a playful and accessible way (game). Oasis Holland Trainingprogram We saw that this was a powerful and playful tool to work in several communities where there s a lack of community and several severe problems arise from that. From intercultural tensions, to problems with youngsters on the streets, lack of social support amongst community members and tensions that arise and play out because people don t interact with each other, but report problems to the municipality. The Oasis game is a six day event that invites a community to project and build in a cooperative way a challenging project chosen by the members of the community to suit their needs. Projects can range from a square, a park, a kindergarten to a cultural center. The game considers a broad definition of the community and involves representatives from different sectors of the society NGO s, Government as well as community members from other parts of the city. The idea behind the name Oasis came from history books: an oasis offers hope, refugee and stability for the tired traveler in the desert. Our world is full of vast deserts : regions and communities where the vitality was destroyed both socially and/or environmentally. However, in these places, there are still inevitable points of light full of hope, beauty and joy. The Oasis Game has the intention of developing more of these points of light, be it by creating new ones of expanding what is already there. A community can work together in a cooperative, creative and quick way in order to build a modern Oasis in only a couple of days: a physical space that promotes life, joy and restoration. The Oasis Game is a distillation of the Warriors without Weapons program, with an emphasis on the community. In the Warriors, the game aims at awakening and cultivating a spirit of social and cooperative entrepreneurship in the members of the community, but is also emphasizes the stimulus in the community itself. In this aspect, two of the main objectives are restored and/or strengthened the relations and affective connections that unite the community, and cultivate a sense of opportunity and responsibility of caring for people and the environment. Het leren kennen en toepassen van methodieken uit ontwikkelingslanden kan een waardevolle toevoeging zijn aan het instrumentarium in de Nederlandse samenlevingsopbouw. De Oasis Game kan in veel wijken met succes worden ingezet om de participatie van buurtbewoners bij het vergroten van de leefbaarheid.

3 Oasis in Brazil An Oasis Stimulates and habilitates entrepreneurship and cooperation in groups and communities; Promotes an appreciative gaze and broaden the capacity of each person to propose creative solutions for critical questions pertaining to the community of our neighborhood; It brings a daily change of perception to our participants that it is possible to change the world without suffering; without compromising its liberty and autonomy and still make it in a pleasant way. Promotes the practice of human values such as: respect, compassion, cooperation, acceptance of differences and etc.; Broadens the level of information about environmental sustainability strategies and construction; Restores or builds a community dream, making it possible to be replicated; The Oasis game is recommended for the following situations: When you want to stimulate and develop work in group; When a company wants to stimulate volunteer work; Initiate a local development plan, When we want to disseminate values that can hardly be assimilated by intellectual learning; When we want to stimulate the MAKE IT HAPPEN in a group; When you want to promote radical changes of culture in a group or team; Why Oasis Game? The oasis game has a social effect (empowerment, stronger sense of community) and a physical result (dream is materialized during the process) and is realized in a very short time. We ve experienced that the Oasis Game meets a pressing need with communities to meet one another more and take matters more into their own hand, without having to fill in 20 forms. At the same time local government and housing institutions wish to service that need, but have no clue how to really engage with communities. The Oasis Games has proven already four times that it meets both demands. 4 The Oasis training In the periode of October 14th till the 23 rd, during the autumn holidays in Holland the Dutch Oasis team and Insituto Elos organize an Oasis Game and Oasis training in Nieuw-Crooswijk in Rotterdam. Oasis Holland Trainingprogram the community Nieuw Crooswijk The community of Nieuw Crooswijk is situated on the north-east side of the centre. It s an old neighborhood with a strong sense of community and used to be dominated by the white working class and is now becoming slowly more multi-cultural. This community is torn apart by the restructuring of the community by the housing corporations that started the demolishing of a central part of the community, but due to the financial crisis (a.o.) has not been able to start building the new apartment buildings. There are some huge open spaces in the community, that are like open wounds. At the same time there s a whole lot of creative energy to use that temporary empty plots and the strong energy of a community that wants to stay together. In the midst of these dynamics with the Oasis Game we re going to search for the points of light and make sure they bring about the oasis that is actually already there in the heart of this community. Het is bevrijdend om je als sociale professional eens niet te focussen op problemen maar om naar kansen te kijken.

5 The Oasis training During this Oasis Game community members and active professionals in and around this community will take part in a training to learn more about the underlying principles, methods and tools and to learn to put them to use in a real context. The training offers theoretical and practical tools, but mostly a real-life learning environment by learning from working in the community itself. With a Group of people trained in the methodology, community members and volunteers we will play the oasis game in the community in two weekends. On the Fridays before the weekends we will have 6 to 7 hours sessions with the traininggroup to learn more about the Oasis Game. Taking part in the weekend activities and the actual Oasis Game is crucial for the learning process and are considered to be part of the training. Schedule: Execution Oasis Game: October 14 th Evening kick-off October 15th and 16th First oasis weekend October 19th Design evening to be confirmed October 22nd and 23rd Second Hands on oasis weekend Trainingdays: October 14th October 21st from to hours Note that the design evening is planned in the middle of the week. It would be great if you could join, as a foreign visitor we could understand you only join for the weekends and return home during the week. What do I get out of the training? We advise you to have a look at the additional folder for international training. It gives more insight and feeling to the process you ll go through. Bringing it down to essence the training offers: - filosofie and principles: what are the underlying principlesof the Oasis Game, which steps do you take when, why and how? - methods and social technologies: several techniques as circledancing, coöperative games, World-cafe and the oasis-roles will be shared as part of the oasis proces. - organisation and facilitation: What do you have to do in order to organise an Oasis Game and facilitate its Group process? Accommodation: If you re from abroad we can offer you the support to organize you some accomodation in Rotterdam. The hosting team is staying in a stay okay hostel about half an hour walk from the community. The organizing team is very willing to help you with finding any accommodation you need. Costs: 650,- for companies, 550,- for NGO s/social entrepreneurs and 300,- for students and individuals. Including: 6 day Trainingsprogram, materials, the full oasis game, coffee and lunch for 6 days, location, certificate.
