5 PRENATAL DEVELOPMENT Prenatal development starts with conception and ends with parturition (birth) Fertilization creates a cell with 23 chromosomes Zygotes: XX or XY The genes on the chromosomes contain the blueprint for all biological development Germinal Stage: Conception to 2 nd week Embryonic Stage: 2 nd week to 8 th week Testosterone, if present, masculinizes the embryo PRENATAL DEVELOPMENT Fetal Stage: 9 th week to birth Brain is most complex organ and most sensitive Start as cell bodies, migrate, and then develop axons and dendrites Newborn humans brain is only 25% of mature size at birth Why? 5

6 TERATOGENS DEVELOPING PHYSICALLY Newborns are very sophisticated in some areas of development Newborns can only see close to their faces Attend very well to social stimuli Motor Development takes time to develop Small number of reflexes that disappear with development 6

7 DEVELOPING PHYSICALLY Cephalocaudal rule Physical development usually moves from head to toe Proximodistal rule Physical development usually move from center out Environment and motivation are also important EFFECTS OF EARLY STIMULATION AND ATTENTION Spitz Two children s homes: Nursery ; Foundling home Both clean and sanitary; Children well fed Foundling children susceptible to disease Many died; survivors were slow developers By age 24 mos. only 7% walked 15 mos. is average age for walking 7

16 VIDEO 3 DEVELOPING INTELLECTUALLY - PIAGET Three important limitations to Piaget s theory Thought that all children graduate in a step-like fashion. Modern theory suggests a gradual and continuous transition. Specified particular ages for each stage. Modern theory suggests that children are much younger when they demonstrate certain abilities Ignored the learning environment and culture. Vygotsky believed that development was the result of interaction with adults. Culture placed limits on development (e.g. language). 16

Compulsive rocking, poor social behavior, rejected their own young Wire-mesh mothers Preferred the cloth mother over the food dispensing one 17

18 HARLOW VIDEO DEVELOPING SOCIALLY - ATTACHMENT John Bowlby wanted to understand human attachment based on the work of Konrad Lorenz and others. Emphasis on evolutionary theory Newborn animals must stay close to caregivers to survive Develop other ways to attract and keep close to caregiver Cries, gurgles coos, eye contact, general cuteness Secure attachment leads to exploration If caregiver moves away, baby takes action to close distance 18

19 DEVELOPING SOCIALLY - ATTACHMENT Bowlby developed a theory of attachment based on his observations of separation anxiety in humans and animals Protest Infants start to cry and resist soothing from others Despair If separation continues, infants become quiet, passive, listless, and apathetic Detachment Unique to humans. Infants become detached from caregiver and others. May disregard or avoid caregiver if they return. DEVELOPING SOCIALLY - ATTACHMENT Mary Ainsworth Developed a technique to study separation anxiety and attachment Strange Situation series of observations of child with mother, stranger, and when mother leaves and re-enters Developed 4 basic attachment styles Secure attachment (60% of children) Anxious-resistant attachment (20% of children) Anxious-avoidant attachment (15% of children) Disorganized/Disoriented (5% of children) 19

22 DEVELOPING SOCIALLY MORAL DEVELOPMENT Humans need each other to survive and need to get along with each other Need to learn to balance our needs versus the needs of others Kohlberg theory of moral development Preconventional stage morality is determined by the consequences for the actor (punished = bad) Conventional stage morality is determined by the extent to which it conforms to social rules (break law = bad) Postconventional stage morality is set by core values and general principles (violate principles = bad) MORAL DILEMMA: KOHLBERG In Europe, a woman was near death from cancer. One drug might save her, a form of radium that a druggist in the same town had recently discovered. The druggist was charging $2,000, ten times what the drug cost him to make. The sick woman s husband, Heinz, went to everyone he knew to borrow the money, but he could get together only about half of what it cost. He told the druggist that his wife was dying and asked him to sell it cheaper or let him pay later. But the druggist said, No. The husband got desperate and broke into the man s store to steal the drug for his wife. Should the husband have done that? Why? 22

23 KOHLBERG VIDEO DEVELOPING SOCIALLY PERSONALITY Erikson proposed one of the most comprehensive theories in psychology Personality is required to deal effectively with the environment and with others Personality is not static and changes over the entire course of the lifespan Proposed a stage theory Each stage centers on emotional polarity As you move from one stage to the next personality becomes more complex as you build on each strength or virtue 23
