1 Sex Relations Education Policy Date of publication / review: October 2016 Author / reviewer: Sue Murphy and Pastoral Committee Proposed date for next review of this policy: June 2017 Intended audience / who has access: Parents, staff and governors Sex and Relationships policy Principles and Values of Sex and Relationship Education at Finchley Catholic High School We ensure that the information given to students is received within the context of the Catholic ethos and teaching is based on sound Catholic moral principles and values. Sex and Relationship Education should be an integral part of the lifelong learning process, beginning in early childhood and continuing into adult life. Sex and Relationship Education should advocate family commitment and love, respect and affection, knowledge and openness within the Catholic ethos. Family is a broad concept; not just one model, e.g. nuclear family. It includes a variety of types of family structure, and acceptance of different approaches. Students and teachers should share and respect each other s views. The important values are love, respect and care for each other. We should generate an atmosphere where questions and discussion on sexual matters can take place without any stigma or embarrassment.
2 Parents or carers are first and best educators for their children and the key people in teaching them about sex, relationships and growing up. We aim to work in partnership with parents/carers and students, consulting them about the content of programmes. The wider Catholic community has much to offer and we aim to work in partnership with the Church, health professionals, social workers and people from the local community who can further our understanding of the issues. Aims of the Programme The key aim of the programme is to provide a resource that is founded on a Catholic understanding of the human person and an appreciation that authentic human love is more than sexual expression, for we are made in the image and likeness of God. The core aims of the programme are: to support our students in developing a greater awareness of the Catholic faith and its distinctive understanding of the human person, of true relationships and of the nature of community to provide accurate information about sex related issues to increase students self esteem and dignity to develop students respect and care for others to explore a range of attitudes and values towards sex related issues and help students to reach their own informed views and make their own choices for a healthier lifestyle to develop students personal, social and emotional skills relating to sexual behaviour and situations (e.g. communication, decision making, empathy, risk assessment and assertiveness) to help students to develop the confidence and skills to discern messages in the media and the positive and negative effects of peer pressure. Programme Content This programme addresses a variety of issues appropriate to the age range through Key Stage 3, 4, and 5. The aim is to develop progressively the understanding and attitude of students, combining the biological, social, moral and religious aspects of human relationship with particular reference to sexuality and procreation. We hope that this approach to sex education encourages our young people to enter into a deeper relationship with God, themselves and others. Legal Requirements The law requires that secondary schools teach Sex and Relationship Education with particular reference to sexuality and procreation, human growth and reproduction including education about HIV and AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections as set out in the National Curriculum. It also requires that the Local Authority, Governing Body and Head Teacher make sure that Sex and Relationship Education is
