1 International Relation Simulation Country Handbook Palestine: Hamas Evan S. and Andrew H 1. Country/organization profile: Since the most recent Palestine election, the leaders of the Hamas organization have had control of all public funds. Hamas has also received much of its financial support from private business owners in major oil countries including Saudi Arabia. In addition, Iran been funding Hamas since its creation in 1987 and has been suspected of sending an estimated 30 million dollars a year into the organization. It is also believed that many Muslim charities throughout North America have been wiring money to Hamas supportive associations. The government structure of Hamas consists of both a military wing and social welfare wing. The responsibilities of the Hamas social sector are to provide education, clinics and hospitals, and maintain a welfare system. The military wing s main focus is simply to combat Israel in the struggle to conquer all Islamic lands. Generally Hamas works towards its political goals by violent protesting and rarely attempts to negotiate peace with rivalling nations. Hamas has been working hard to improve the social system of Palestine with the creation of schools, hospitals, and libraries. Although the quality of life is quite low in Palestine Hamas due to the rising conflicts between Palestine and Israel, and Hamas and Fatah, the Hamas government has been spending more of its annual budget on social programs. They have developed an improved welfare system in order to fight poverty, and have also founded many extra curricular organizations including sports teams. The Muslim religion of course plays a major role on the social life of most Palestinians. Citizens of Palestine frequently take part in sacred religious gatherings and prayers. The ultimate goal of Palestine Hamas is also our mission statement which states, We shall raise the banner of God over ever inch of Palestine in order to create a pure Islamic republic. Essentially, this means that we intend on gaining control over the territories now known as Israel, and spreading the religion of Islam to all parts of the state. Our initial objectives in the simulation will be to bring down the Israeli wall and abolish Jewish settlements in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. We believe that this land is rightfully ours because when the people of Israel attained it in 1967, Britain had no rights to it. There is no place for a Jewish sanctuary anywhere in the Middle East, which has been proven by the dozens of conflicts that have already occurred.

3 Ismail Haniyeh Political Position: Leader of the Hamas Political Party Political Agenda: To attain a Palestinian state liberated from Israeli control. 5 4. In depth report: The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been the result of a long history of bad blood between Arab nations and Israel. There have been many events that have occurred throughout the last century which have contributed to the problem. One major incident that has affected the resulting conflict between Israel and Palestine was the Six Day War on June 5 th, The Six Day War was a battle that erupted between Israel and surrounding Arab nations shortly after their arrival in the Middle East. When the country of Israel was officially established in the year 1948, tensions quickly arose between Israel and their neighbours. After events such as the Suez Crisis and Samu Incident, it became inevitable that a Jewish nation could not remain in the Middle East without certain conflict. On June 5 th, 1967, war broke out between Israel and Arab nations: Syria, Egypt, and Jordan, with additional troops from Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, and Algeria. In what was perhaps the most surprising war related outcome of the 20 th century, Israel defeated all its enemies in a brief six days capturing Jerusalem, the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, the Golan Heights, and the Sinai Peninsula. During the aftermath of the war, the United Nations attempted to arrange peace talks with Israel and opposing nations, but they could not come to an agreement over the land disputes. Immediately following the capture of Gaza and the West Bank, the people of Israel began creating settlements within what was just days earlier Muslim land. This event greatly influenced the Israel-Palestine conflict because to Palestinians it shattered their dream of achieving an independent statehood. With the territories of Gaza and the West Bank under Israeli control, the Palestinians who had already inhabited the area were forced to live alongside their worst enemies which only amplified their hatred of them.
