1 Middletown s Missing Friends and Irish Immigrants During the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the Irish faced many difficulties in Ireland, including famine, poverty, lack of work, and political unrest. The Irish flooded into America seeking a better life. During this time, communication between families in Ireland and America was difficult at best. It was not uncommon for immigrants to lose contact with their families in Ireland or lose track of relatives or friends in America. In 1831, the Boston Pilot, an Irish Catholic newspaper founded by a Jesuit priest, ran an ad for a missing Irishman. This ad was the first of 31,000 entries that would become known as the Missing Friends column which ran in the Pilot from The advertisements, originally published in The Pilot from , are reproduced in a seven book series entitled The Search for Missing Friends: Irish Immigrant Advertisements Placed in the Boston Pilot, edited by Ruth-Ann Harris, Donald M. Jacobs, B. Emer O'Keefe, Boston: New England Historic Genealogical Society, The books are indexed by surname, place names in Ireland, and place names in America.
