1 Anatomy and Physiology I BY30 Fall 2007 Suffolk County Community College Eastern Campus - Riverhead, New York Instructor: Edwin J. Grasmann Contact: me at DocEJG@aol.com or at work: Office hours: By appointment after lab or lecture Textbooks: You will need both of these books. The full package comes with a nice little photo atlas that will be helpful in certain labs. As anatomy does not change and physiology changes slowly I think you will be fine with an older edition of these texts. Most likely, you will use the same books in BY32. Fundamentals of Anatomy and Physiology, Sixth or Seventh Edition, by Frederic H. Martini Human Anatomy and Physiology Laboratory Manual. Cat Version, Eighth Edition by Elaine N. Marieb, Benjamin Cummings. Course description/objectives: This course will introduce students to the structure (anatomy) and function (physiology) of the human body. Students will learn general biochemical, mathematical and chemical principles and basic cellular biology in order to better understand human physiology. A variety of anatomic terms and physiologic functions pertaining to the human body will be explored. When appropriate, active dissection and observational specimens will be utilized to demonstrate anatomic features. Lab will serve as an adjunct to material presented in lecture as well as a forum for presentation of new material. Students are expected to actively participate in lab. You should bring your lecture notebooks to lab as new material will be presented in lab. The lab is not a separate course. The primary function of lab is to review, reinforce and expand upon concepts. By virtue of the nature of this course as well as my background and training I will focus most heavily on areas that are clinically relevant to the study of human anatomy and physiology. Additionally, discussion of clinical and clinicopathologic correlates to the material presented will be incorporated as a reinforcement to your understanding of the course matter. In the first half of the two-semester Anatomy and Physiology sequence, we will study the characteristics of various tissue types, the integument system, skeletal system, muscular system and nervous system, focusing both on the anatomical features as well as achieving an understanding of their actions, interactions, physiology and functions. Anatomy & Physiology I Syllabus Page 1 of 8
2 GRADING POLICY: The lecture portion of this course will count as 75% of your total grade. The lab portion will count as 25% of your total grade. There will be 11 quizzes given at the start of class and reviewed immediately. Each quiz is worth 10 points. I will drop the lowest quiz grade and add your individual quiz scores to obtain your quiz grade. Unless you make other arrangements with me, if you are late and miss the quiz you will receive a grade of zero. There are no makeup quizzes. Neither the lab final nor the lecture final is cumulative. IF YOU ARE GOING TO MISS A QUIZ OR EXAM IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO CONTACT ME BY CALLING MY OFFICE (516) OR LEAVING A MESSAGE WITH THE DEPARTMENT SECRETARY (631) If I am out of the office and you do not speak with me when you call I suggest you also leave a message with the department. You are responsible for all assigned readings, material I present in lecture and lab and handouts. If you are late or absent or for some other reason are unable to locate a handout copy it from a friend in class. I generally do not have extra copies of the handout with me. Towards that end, I also encourage you to work with someone else from class in order that you may be able to share and review your lecture notes and other class materials. Most students who have done well in class tape the lectures and take notes. They then listen to the tape and correct or add to their notes. If I misstate something in class don t be afraid to let me know. Obviously, the material I quiz on and lecture on is what I feel is important and hence am more likely to test on. However, you are responsible for all assigned readings. This material is not difficult but it is voluminous and requires a good deal of outside studying. Charts, diagrams and mnemonics are useful in a class of this nature. If you are having problems you will know quickly by your quiz grades. It is best to see me right away rather than wait until you are deep in grade quick sand. The breakdown of grades is as follows: Lab Midterm 12.5% Lab Final 12.5% Lecture Midterm 25% Lecture Final 25% Quiz Total 25% 12.5 points 12.5 points 25 points 25 points 25 points EACH OF YOU SHOULD SEND AN TO ME AT DOCEJG@AOL.COM. I will e- mail material and information concerning lectures, labs and exams and you are responsible for all ed material. If you do not have an address, computer or printer all of these are provided by the college. BRING A SCANTRON TO ALL LECTURE EXAMS Anatomy & Physiology I Syllabus Page 2 of 8
3 Numeric to letter grade scale is below: 90 and above = A = B = B = C = C = D = D 63 or below = F POLICIES AND PROCEDURES 1. Do not miss a class or be late. All quizzes will be given within the first 10 minutes of the period. Attendance is mandatory and crucial given the volume of material covered in each class. 2. Do not be rude. If someone is speaking remain silent and listen. You might learn or receive clarification by our discussion and obviously if you didn t hear the question you will not know what we are talking about. When I am speaking I expect you will not be. 3. Recording of class is fine. 4. Turn cell phones off when class starts. 5. Be prepared. Read all assigned materials before class. 6. If you wish to meet with me you can call me or speak with me at the start of class or at the break and we will make a mutually convenient appointment. 7. WITHDRAWAL POLICY: I do not want to give anyone a failing grade. You may withdraw from this class and receive a grade of W until the week before finals. This will allow you to make a well informed decision as to whether you should remain in this course and risk receiving a poor grade or simply withdraw and receive a W. I am available to discuss this matter with you. BEFORE YOU GET INTO TROUBLE SEE ME. Do not just vanish from the class. Be sure to notify me and the registrar if you are withdrawing. 8. By the nature of this material there may be several correct answers to any question on an exam or quiz. You are always instructed to pick the BEST or MOST CORRECT answer. For example, assume you were asked to describe the weather. You might answer wintry or cold or 27 and snowing heavily. All three responses are technically correct BUT, obviously, the last choice is the BEST answer since it most specifically addresses the question.. If there is a serious dispute with a question or best answer on an exam or quiz raise your concern during the in class review of the test. Anatomy & Physiology I Syllabus Page 3 of 8
4 9. ACADEMIC DISHONESTY will not be tolerated. You will receive a grade of F and will be reported to the Dean for further investigation and action. Broadly defined academic dishonesty is cheating. For example, cheating is copying someone else s answer(s) on a quiz, lab exam or lecture exam or the viewing of any unauthorized materials during an exam. You and I both know cheating when we see it. PLEASE DO NOT PUT ME OR YOURSELF IN THIS POSITION! The consequences of cheating far outweigh any benefit. As a healthcare professional you have an affirmative duty to report the academic dishonesty of another. Do everything you can to make it obvious that you are NOT cheating. 10. Please work together in lab. I encourage you to freely discuss any aspect of the lab you wish with others including results, findings, impressions, errors and procedures. I do not collect or grade lab material. 11. You should be familiar with the material on pages 65 through 75 of the College Catalog. 12. When asking or answering a question raise your hand. Speak loudly and clearly so that everyone in the class can hear and understand you. 13. MAKE UP EXAMS: If you miss a midterm or final exam you must have an excuse that is, in my opinion, valid. Examples of valid excuses are the death of a family member or a close relative, a serious medical illness or other events of a like magnitude. Makeup exams will be given in a format and manner of my choosing and solely at the discretion of myself or Dr. Koukounas (Chairman of the Department). Supporting documentation may be required for absence from an exam (Physician s Note, Obituary, Police Report, Emergency Room registration or other supporting documents that I deem relevant and appropriate). In the event that you know you are going to miss an exam you must speak to me as soon as possible. 14. If you have a question or concern regarding a matter in class or of academic importance to you please speak with me. I am available to discuss any questions or issues of concern you may have and any discussion with me will be held in strict confidence. Anatomy & Physiology I Syllabus Page 4 of 8
