Lessn Prcedures Preparatin Befre using this lessn, take time t visit the Califrnia CareerZne Letter Builder tl (link in Materials sectin). Yu need t have a student accunt t access the CareerZne Letter Builder. If yu d nt have an accunt, create ne (see the Califrnia CareerZne Accunt Setup Instructr s Ntes). 3 1. Begin the lessn by intrducing the rle business letters play in the jb search prcess. Business letters may be the initial pprtunity t make a first impressin that can either lead t r limit further interactin, such as the invitatin t an interview. They prvide an pprtunity t cnvey infrmatin abut neself and/r demnstrate knwledge abut the psitin prviding infrmatin that may nt be in the applicatin r resume. Clearly written business letters can demnstrate the ability t cmmunicate effectively and cnvey an understanding f the situatin f the persn r business t which they are written. Ask students t brainstrm the varius types f business letters. Write them n the bard r review their list. Then tell students there are at least fur basic types f business letters. Put the fur basic types f business letters up n the bard and have the class srt their brainstrm results int the fur letter categries. 1) Intrductin letters are used t intrduce yurself t a ptential emplyer r fr a prspective infrmatinal interview. These letters are useful if yu are cntacting smene yu have never met. 2) Cver letters shuld be included anytime yu submit a jb applicatin r resume. They may nt be required but they prvide a great pprtunity t describe why yu believe yu are the best candidate fr the jb. Remember the ptential emplyer is interested in hiring smene wh can fill a need they have s fcus n hw yur skills can help the emplyer, nt hw this jb wuld be a great benefit t yu. 3) Thank yu letters shuld always be sent fllwing a jb interview r infrmatinal interview. These letters cnvey an appreciatin fr the time given yu by the ptential emplyer and prvide an pprtunity t make ne mre gd impressin that culd factr int the hiring prcess. 4) Reference letter requests cme frm the emplyer t the jb applicant asking the applicant t prvide the name, telephne number, r a written reference fr yu. Generally, references are frm smene yu knw well, have wrked fr, r taken a class frm. Avid using family members as references because ptential emplyers assume they will be biased. 4 clearly that yu are asking them t be a reference and let them knw if yu are asking them t be a reference fr a specific jb r want a letter yu can use fr a variety f ptential jbs. Review the basic frmat that can be used with any business letter: Cntact/Address t whm are yu sending the letter, include the name and address. Bdy explain why yu are writing and what yu hpe will be the result f sending the letter. Include infrmatin abut hw yu can be cntacted. If yu d nt already have an apprpriate business address, nw is a gd time t set ne up and begin using it. Clsing/signature fr business letters this shuld be frmal even fr smene yu knw. Have a shrt discussin with students abut what is and is nt an apprpriate address fr business purpses. Explain that addresses are imprtant. Use the cmputer and prjectr t shw students the Califrnia CareerZne Letter Builder tl (link in Materials sectin) and nte that the Letter Builder requires the user t be lgged in t their accunt. Cnfirm that all students have a CareerZne accunt and prvide the set up directins t thse wh d nt. Brainstrm the types f businesses r peple they culd write business letters t and then instruct students t use the CareerZne Letter Builder t create and save a draft cver letter, thank yu letter, and request fr a reference. As the instructr, it is imprtant fr yu t knw that: Students can cmplete sme f the activities n the CareerZne withut having a student accunt. Hwever, students assessments results and ccupatinal research will nt be saved unless students are lgged int their accunts. Because career and cllege planning is an nging prcess, having students save their wrk means they will be able t access it fr anther class r at a later date. T help yur students remember their passwrds, yu may wish t establish a passwrd cnventin.
