2 SMGT 1 Syllabus COURSE SYLLABUS SMGT 1 SOCIAL ISSUES IN SPORT MANAGEMENT COURSE DESCRIPTION This course will examine the social institution of sport and its consequences for the North American society; the social organization from play to professional sport; violence and discrimination; women and ethnic minorities in sport; and the socialization implications from participation in sports. RATIONALE This course has as its primary aims an increase in the awareness of, knowledge of, and skills in addressing social issues in sport; and additionally, the course will provide an introduction to the legal aspects of sport, as it pertains to the social standards in sport. MEASURABLE LEARNING OUTCOMES Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: A. Understand the social problems related to sport in its dimensions as play, competition, leisure, education and work. B. Analyze current sport issues from a spiritual perspective, develop and analyze a personal philosophy regarding social responsibility and synthesize current sport issues with a Christian worldview. C. Identify the social and cultural trends and attitudes which have resulted in the exclusion of demographic groups from sport. Page 1 of 3

3 SMGT 1 Syllabus D. Develop an appreciation of the relationship between society and sport recognizing how they effect and influence each other. E. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the sociological theories that apply to sport, the history of sport, the influence of politics, materialism, the media, religion and economics of sport. F. Demonstrate word processing skills to create save and print documents, conduct Internet and digital research on social issues in sport, demonstrate an understanding of copyright laws and practice responsible use of information services. G. Identify the rights and responsibilities of sport management professionals as depicted in codes of professional ethics and justify personal and management values and principles. V. COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND ASSIGNMENTS A. Textbook readings and video lecture presentations/notes. B. Course Requirements Checklist After reading the Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in Module/Week 1. C. Discussion Board forums (4) In the Discussion Board forums, questions will be posted in order to generate interaction among students in regard to relevant current course topics. Current and archived issues of the national sports publication SportsBusiness Journal will be used as the basis for research and discussion. D. Module Written Assignments (8) There will be 8 assignments (short hands-on real world sport marketing and public relations related projects) that will need to be completed during the course. E. Quizzes (8) There will be 8 open-book quizzes that will need to be completed during the course. Each will contain 10 questions, multiple-choice and short essay, with a 60 minute time limit. VI. Late Assignment Policy If the student is unable to complete an assignment on time, then he or she must contact the instructor immediately by . Assignments that are submitted after the due date without prior approval from the instructor will receive the following deductions: 1. Late assignments submitted within one week of the due date will receive a 10% deduction. 2. Assignments submitted more than one week late will receive a % deduction. 3. Assignments submitted two weeks late or after the final date of the class will not be accepted. 4. Late Discussion Board threads or replies will not be accepted. Special circumstances (e.g. death in the family, personal health issues) will be reviewed by the instructor on a case-by-case basis. D. Grievance Procedure If students have any grievance with the course or the instructor, the student should attempt to resolve the matter informally by contacting the instructor first. Egregious or repeated violations of this policy may result in formal disciplinary action. E. Time Limitations All tests and exams are subject to established time limits within the course or when the time permitted on Blackboard expires. No additional time will be allotted. F. Content Students are responsible for all course material, regardless of whether or not it is covered during course lectures, during optional exam reviews, or in optional study sheets. Course material includes, but is not limited to, all assigned readings, video, audio, on-line materials, journals, etc. The content for course quizzes and examinations may come from any of these sources. G.
