1 Debit Card Report November 2015
2 Monthly debit card report November 2015 Apart from actual card numbers the data referred to depict the underlying trend following seasonal adjustment using X-12 ARIMA. The X-12 ARIMA ly seasonal adjustments include trading days and leap years. Growth rates are ly. The 2014 data set has been fully reconciled with annual data published in UK Payment Statistics Number of cards Following a slight decline in October, the debit cards in issue returned to positive growth in November. This measure reached a record 97.4 million after increasing by 1.0% on October the strongest ly growth since May It is likely this uptick, was in part a reflection of increased issuance of new contactless cards during the, adding to the circulation alongside existing cards with November expiry dates. The issuance of contactless debit cards continues to grow strongly. According to the latest data reported to The UK Cards Association, the contactless debit cards in circulation amounted to 54.1 million in November, accounting for 54% of total debit cards in issue, up from 36% a year ago. This growth was mainly driven by increasing consumer awareness and the growing businesses accepting contactless payments. Chart 1 Number of debit cards and contactless debit cards in issue Non-contactless Contactless Number of cards, millions Nov-09 Nov-10 Nov-11 Nov-12 Nov-13 Nov-14 Nov-15 Domestic spending During November domestic spending amounted to 38.9 billion after increasing by 1.2% on October the highest growth rate in 8 s and compares to 34.9 billion spent in November This increasingly strong growth could, in part be explained by improving economic performance and growing consumer financial confidence alongside record low inflation, measuring near zero over the last ten s. The latest figures showed a slight uptick in the annual UK consumer price index for the first time since July after growing by 0.1% in the year to November and compares to a fall of 0.1% in the year to October. The debit card purchases made in the UK also continued to increase strongly and reached 897 million following ly growth of 1.2% and compares to 785 million a year ago. The main drivers of this growth include the increasing use of contactless cards accelerating the ongoing migration from other forms of payment to debit cards. It is also likely that the growing popularity of contactless payments among consumers has driven a trend evident since March where volumes have grown at a faster pace than s. 1 ONS, Consumer Price Inflation, November 2015: Page 2

Meanwhile, cross-border spending continued to grow at a relatively faster pace compared to domestic spending since February this year, amounting to 3.3 billion, up from 2.4 billion in November Additionally, the higher growth rate in s relative to volumes is likely being driven by increasing higher s at cross-border e-commerce merchants such as Amazon and ebay, likely coinciding with Black Friday sales and promotions 2. 4 s The domestic average (ATV) remained fairly static, rising slightly by 2p between October and November to stand at the first ly increase since February, and compares to a year ago. Low inflation coupled with intense price competition in the retail market have been the main factors putting downward pressure on the domestic ATV over the last year. The international ATV increased for the third consecutive to reach 27.81, up by 34p on October, and compares to in November This upward trend in the international ATV has likely been driven by changing consumer spending patterns, in particular, the preference to purchase higher items via cross-border online retailers.
