3 DYNAMIC EXTENSION 1. Overview This document will serve as an overview of key features in the Mitel Series X software launch. Our main topic of focus for this document will center on Mitel Dynamic Extension. You will learn how Dynamic Extension will greatly enhance your mobility either in the office as a corridor warrior or as a traveling road warrior by transforming any direct dial number into your extension. You will learn how Dynamic Extension s flexibility lends itself to more nimble business continuity solutions by allowing users to log in anywhere and make and receive calls as if they are in their office. 2. What is Dynamic Extension Dynamic Extension provides by-directional call routing so you can always receive your calls no matter your location as well as originate calls through the system allowing you to present a single identity and leverage Mitel IP-PBX in-call features (e.g. conferencing) from any external device. Dynamic Extension works over any trunk such as SIP, or even analog C.O. lines. For trunks that do not provide supervisory signaling, Dynamic Extension uses answer confirmation to make sure the call is handled appropriately. The Mitel components that enable Dynamic Extension include Mitel Personal Ring Groups (PRG) and hot desking. Personal Ring Groups allow you to assign up to eight devices 1 to participate in your personal ring group which can be defined as a grouping of devices that can be enabled as a Dynamic Extension. These numbers can be any internal extension number on the system or any number in your network of Mitel systems or ANY direct dial number. This number could be your mobile number, your home number or any DID. For external numbers you would leverage the new feature called external hot desking. The combination of personal ring group and external hot desking result in the new Dynamic Extension. Additionally, a Mitel 3300 Communications Platform (ICP) system, or the same software, Mitel Call Director, running on an industry standard Sun, IBM or HP server, could be added into an existing non-mitel PBX environment and serve as a gateway to enable Dynamic Extension for those users. Effectively, through the combined use of a 3300 ICP connected to an existing non-mitel PBX with the inclusion of Dynamic Extension, the enterprise can now turn on Mitel IP features without the need for installation of Q.Sig or DPNSS. There are two new features included in the Series X release. The feature names are Group Presence and Handoff. Group Presence Allows members of call groups such as hunt groups, ACD groups, Ring groups and Personal Ring groups to make themselves absent or present in a group. Only members who are present in a group are offered calls to that group. The Handoff feature for Personal Ring Groups (PRGs) Allows calls to be pushed or pulled between group member devices; a push passes the call to the group, where it can be answered by any other present group device. A pull takes an in-progress call away from another member. To push a call to, or to pull a call from, another member, you configure a Handoff key in the Multiline Set Key Assignment form (see Programming, below). You can program any button, including Programmable Key Module (PKM) buttons, as a Handoff key. The same key is used to push a call and to pull a call. If the Handoff key is pressed while on a call, the call is pushed. If the PRG member device is idle or listening to dial tone, and there is an in-progress call on another member in the PRG, the call is pulled by pressing the Handoff Feature Access Key (FAK). The voice path to a non-member device remains connected to the member device that initiated the handoff until that device releases the call or another PRG member answers. If the pushing device stays connected until the new device answers, the caller 1 Devices may include IP or non-ip phones, Mitel proprietary or non-proprietary, fixed or mobile phones, hard phones or softphones effectively any device (hard phones must provide DTMF functionality) MITEL SERIES X 1
4 MITEL SERIES X TECHNICAL WHITE PAPER hears a short break in audio when the call is pushed to the new device. If the pushing device releases the call before the new device answers it, the caller hears ringback until another member device answers the call. When a call is pulled, it connects to the pulling member s set and disconnects from the pulled-from member s set. The caller hears a short break in audio when the call is connected to the new device. The caller does not hear music on hold. The call is not disconnected from the originating party until it is successfully connected to the party that pulled the call. 3. Ways to use Dynamic Extension Dynamic Extension can be used to: Direct incoming calls to multiple devices inside or outside of your system Originate calls through your system to present a single identity, extend Mitel IP-PBX features to your mobile device or any external line Add Dynamic Extension to any legacy system Please refer to the following examples: Personal Ring Group Any Phone (Mobile, Home, DID) LAN / WAN Mitel Internal ext WAN Example 1 Personal Ring Group Mitel Teleworker These devices are not linked except perhaps call forwarding Alien or Legacy PBX Any Legacy Device Example 2 Add Dynamic Extension to a Legacy System 2
5 DYNAMIC EXTENSION Typical Deployment These devices are now twinned in personal ring group. Calls can be seamlessly managed from either device Alien or Legacy PBX Any Legacy Device Step 1 Add 3300 ICP into the network to enable Dynamic Extension Personal Ring Group Any Phone (Mobile, Home, DID) LAN / WAN Mitel Internal ext or Teleworker Alien or Legacy PBX Any Legacy Device Step 2 And beyond add Mitel phones, teleworkers and other value added applications MITEL SERIES X 3
6 MITEL SERIES X TECHNICAL WHITE PAPER 4. Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery A key benefit for companies that deploy Mitel solutions is the Mitel Communications Director flexible deployment architecture. Most companies have well defined disaster recovery and business continuity plans. A typical Disaster Recovery plan will include a plan to have a subset of employees report to a collocation and occupy a desk with redirect to that location to keep the work flow moving. Consider the following redundant data center architecture and the high availability it would provide to your enterprise; access, Mitel voice services, application data and storage could be load-shared between locations to protect against catastrophic outages at either location. Services can failover between locations. This is generally referred to as geo-redundancy. There are other scenarios that need to be considered that disrupt business work flow that have nothing to do with technology outage or a natural disaster that prevent employees from getting into the office; situations such as terror attacks, police / hostage situations, disease breakout, power outage or inclement weather. The Mitel solution would include Teleworker capabilities for phones deployed over broadband internet at home, Unified Communications / soft clients to make and receive calls or log in as a contact center agent. Dynamic Extension would give you to the ability to make and receive calls no matter where you happen to be as long as you have access to a mobile phone or POTS line by simply logging from that line and on the fly converting that number into your Dynamic Extension. This can be done from a web based GUI or right from the device through a TUI should you not have internet access. Once logged in, any calls to your office number route to where you are and any calls you make present your corporate identity and you have access to all of your system features such as internal dialing to your colleagues, ad-hoc conference calling and transfer capabilities. This can all be done on any mobile device or any number in the world with no client software required on the mobile device. 7 DYNAMIC EXTENSION 5. Engineering Information Here are some important engineering guidelines for you to remember. For more detailed information please refer to the engineering guidelines for the Mitel 3300 ICP: Maximum number of PRGs that can be programmed at the same time on a single ICP To view the maximum number of PRGs and the number of used PRGs for your 3300 ICP network, see the System Capacity Display form Maximum number of PRG members including the prime member in a group Maximum number of PRGs in which a device (prime line) can be programmed Maximum number of simultaneously ringing PRG members Maximum number of PRGs ringing simultaneously (typically with two members per group) Maximum number of PRGs a non-prime member can belong to 50 percent of the maximum number of prime lines on the system For example, on a 700-user system, up to 350 groups can be programmed, and on a 5600-user system, up to 2800 groups can be programmed 8 1 Non-MXe Servers: 292 MXe Servers: 812 These maximum values may be unattainable due to system limitations Non-MXe Servers: 86 MXe Servers: For detailed information on engineering and programming, please refer to on-line documentation. 6. Summary Mitel s new Series X provides seamless / converged mobility allowing you to work anywhere without boundaries, without limitation on mobile device, without the need for client software and without the need for additional server hardware. A simple way to improve efficiency, reduce mobility costs and protect your business. Please contact Mitel or your Mitel authorizedpartner for more information. MITEL SERIES X 5
