1 Italiano 212 (online) Christopher Leoni Inverno 2010 Kidder 113N Office Hours: MTR 10:00-11:00 and by appt Skype address: christopher_leoni Benvenuti! Welcome to OSU s second Italian class online; just as the millenium s first Italian class at OSU in 2001, you will be part of a vanguard of new students eager to learn the beautiful Italian language, excited to discover much about Italian culture, and become part of network-a family- of Italo-philes and Italo-phones! But first, some specifics: Second Year Italian series online: IT 211, IT 212 & IT credit hours each / 12 credit sequence The entire sequence (IT 211, IT 212 & IT 213) will fulfill the requirement of one year of a foreign language. The online course uses the same text and materials as the on-campus course. Course outline will be readjusted as a summer intensive course. Intended Outcomes Students will be able to: 1. Listen to and comprehend intermediate spoken Italian; 2. Speak with intermediate competency; 3. Write compositions using vocabulary and grammatical concepts studied; 4. Read expository and narrative texts. Intended Skill Acquisition 1. Converse with people in Italian; 2. Utilize tu and Lei (you) forms correctly; 3. Pronounce words correctly; 4. Aurally identify meaning of simple-to-complex questions; 5. Learn, use, and refine a base of vocabulary to make conversation flow; 6. Respond to questions using learned grammar and vocabulary; 7. Compose texts and questions in Italian; 8. Recognize themes of full-speed Italian conversations focusing on learned vocabulary and grammar; 9. Evaluate personal practices in light of new cultural perspectives.
2 Required Texts & Materials: Text: Oggi in Italia, 8 th Edition with SAM, Merlonghi, Houghton Mifflin Co. Companion Website: ml Please follow carefully the steps below for studying and submitting work. For each chapter: Read and study the vocabulary and cultural notes. Complete the corresponding exercises in both the text and workbook (SAM) (back of book) Study the grammar and do the exercises in the text and workbook (SAM); Use the Companion Website (CW) to compliment and reinforce learning; Do interactive activities and watch videos on Companion Website (CW); Submit required compositions (piccole scriutture) via Blackboard as outlined below. The professor will make suggestions for corrections to your submitted composition. Then, you will resubmit with corrections; After all work for the chapter has been completed, take the practice chapter exam and the exam. Check in with your instructor at least once a week. At any time, contact your instructor with questions. Voti: Quiz 2, 3 (2 x 35) 70 punti Quiz 1, 4 (2 x 70) 140 punti Piccole scritture = 3 x punti OP Skype 50 punti OP Record Audio 60 punti Worksheet 20 punti Totale 400 punti IT 212 Composition (Piccole scritture) Topics: Please submit double-spaced compositions via Blackboard. The length of our P.S.s this term is approximately three quarters of one page typed, minimum, with 2 pages maximum please! Great job last term, allow me three pieces of advice: Mostly, write your compositions directly in Italian first; it s much easier in the long run than writing first in your native language and then translating. Second, avoid online translators like the plague, especially for more than one word (i.e. whole sentences) at a time. And, when you look up words online or use translation services (they actually can be helpful, of course), check what part of speech is the word, and do you need to conjugate it in the
3 case of a verb, or make it singular or plural or agree in gender... Lastly, I advise against using verb tenses or complex structures that we have not covered in class or you have not studied adequately on your own. Oral Proficiency (OP): We will continue to explore the aural/oral component of this class in two principle ways: Skype and the Record Audio function on Blackboard. Last term was trial and error and fits and starts, this term should be much smoother in terms of expectations and technical how to s. I will establish two OP Skype categories and two OP Record Audio categories in the gradebook. This means that twice we will chat live on Skype (5 to 10 minutes; this will be fun and HELPFUL, not to worry!) and twice you ll record your voice and submit it to me as homework. To do that, the lesson learned from last term is that you will need to check out a microphone/headset from a computer lab, or make very certain that your computer has a microphone, and use ONLY the Record Audio button found in Blackboard. You save the file on your computer/flash drive, then upload it in the corresponding Assignment category. As for Skype, I d like to check in once during the first 2 weeks of class (an announcement will be made Week 1), and a second time during the last two weeks of class. Each Week : Do all online activities and exercises in the text and Student Activities Manual (SAM). Refer to website Companion Website (CW)) for supplementary explanations and practice. Academic dishonesty will result in a grade of F. Link to Statement of Expectations for Student Conduct: Students with Disabilities Accommodations are collaborative efforts between students, faculty and Disability and Access Services (DAS). Students with accommodations approved through DAS are responsible for contacting the faculty member in charge of the course prior to or during the first week of the term to discuss accommodations. Students who believe they are eligible for accommodations but who have not yet obtained approval through DAS should contact DAS immediately at Course Evaluation We encourage you to engage in the course evaluation process each term online, of course. The evaluation form will be available toward the end of each term, and you will be sent instructions by Ecampus. You will login to Student Online Services to respond to the online questionnaire. The results on the form are anonymous and are not tabulated until after grades are posted.
