3 Creating a Microsoft 2003 cluster with a SAN/iQ quorum disk Overview This support note introduces LeftHand Networks customers to a Microsoft 2003 Cluster environment. It outlines the process of creating a Microsoft 2003 cluster with a SAN/iQ volume as the quorum device. In addition to the benefits of application server clustering, the LeftHand Networks SAN/iQ solution provides administrators the flexibility to dynamically increase individual storage volumes, manage redundancy levels by volume, snapshot and/or copy critical data via an IP link. The Quorum Resource Microsoft Cluster Server must have the capability to keep track of transactions and cluster configurations across all nodes. This is accomplished through one of two options a quorum disk or majority node set. The traditional method is a quorum disk. The quorum disk is a physical disk that all nodes have access to, can fail between nodes, and is present at all times. A SAN/iQ volume created as an iscsi target can act as the quorum device. Note: New to Microsoft Cluster Server (MCS) 2003 is the Majority Node Set option, which places the quorum information on the local hard drives of all the nodes in the cluster. The quorum information is continually updated via a separate heartbeat network. To setup a Majority Node cluster refer to 3

4 The quorum resource is established when the cluster is initially created. Before creating a cluster you must create a SAN/iQ volume to act as the Quorum resource. The following steps outline the process to create a Quorum resource and create a new cluster. 1 From the LeftHand Networks Centralized Management Console, create a SAN/iQ volume, and attach it to the first node in the cluster via the iscsi protocol. For assistance in attaching the iscsi disk see the application note, Enabling LeftHand SAN volumes with the Microsoft iscsi initiator. Best practice: Create a 500MB volume with a soft threshold of 400MB, replication level 2. For more information on creating a volume reference the Creating LeftHand Networks volumes using Microsoft iscsi. 2 Open the Cluster Administrator and click on the cluster icon in the upper left. When the Open Connection to Cluster window appears, use the drop down box and select the Create new cluster option. 4

5 3 This now starts the Create new cluster wizard. Next select the Domain name from the drop down box and type in the name of the cluster. Note: this is the name of the cluster, not the name of the server the users will be accessing. Once the cluster is created you will create Groups where you will enter in the virtual server name. 5

6 6 4 Next enter the name of the computer to be added to the cluster and click Next.

7 5 The cluster wizard will now analyze the configuration. This must finish without errors to proceed. If any errors occur they will be described in the window. Once complete click Next. 7

8 8 6 Next enter the static IP address of the cluster and click Next.

9 7 Next enter the User Name and Password for the cluster administrator. This can be the same as the administrator account or you can create a separate account specifically for the cluster administrator. When complete, click Next. 9

10 10 8 Next the cluster wizard will display the proposed cluster configuration. At this point you must select the quorum device the cluster will use. Click on the Quorum button to bring up a drop down box with a list of choices for the quorum device. Select the quorum drive created in step one. Once the quorum device is selected click Next.

11 9 The cluster wizard will not reanalyze the cluster configuration and create a one node cluster. This must complete without errors for the cluster to be configured correctly. If any errors occur, drill down using the +/- symbols to determine the error. Once the operation competes without error click Next. 10 This will bring up the final screen, click Finish to complete the Cluster Configuration wizard. The Cluster Administrator should now contain only the Cluster Group. 11

12 Adding Additional Nodes to the Cluster To add addition nodes to the cluster follow the steps below: 1 On the node to be added, Connect the iscsi quorum disk to the system through the iscsi initiator. The disk will show up in Disk Management but not in the traditional sense. It will appear only as a place holder, this is because the disk reservation is being held by the first node in the cluster. The disk will not appear to the cluster until the Group is failed over to the new node. 2 From within the Cluster Administrator on the first node of the cluster, right click the cluster name in the Cluster Administrator screen and select Add then Nodes. This will open another wizard similar to the one used to create the cluster. 3 Proceed through the wizard. At the end of the wizard the wizard will analyze the cluster configuration and automatically add the new node to the cluster, same as step 9 above. If any errors occur you must correct them prior to the wizard completing successfully. The cluster is now ready to support additional Groups and Resources to create a highly available environment. 12
