Applicant's Name & Contact Information: University of Kentucky Trap and Skeet Team President: Advisor: Assistant Professor University of Kentucky Dept. of Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Kentucky Clinic 740 South Limestone, Suite K401 Lexington, KY Awareness/Public Benefit: The UK Trap and Skeet Team is UK s fastest growing club sport, and overall second largest club sport on campus. Over three year the team has double in size every year by recruiting more members and retaining those from the previous years. Due to the young nature of the team, we have only seen one member graduate in two years and are now poised to grow even larger this year. Our team reaches out across the state, coaching and mentoring 4H shooters, being involved with more than just one range, and bringing the benefits that the university extends us to the clubs that we compete at. On campus we are very involved, volunteering with the dental school and making ourselves a very public entity. This year alone we have been written up in the campus newspaper twice for the outstanding growth and popularity we have achieved along with a representative of our being elected a member of the club sports committee, composed of 6 of 32 clubs within the campus. State wide we are also reaching out to help motivate kids for the prospect of shooting in college by sending team apparel out to shoots as door prizes and attending and fielding our own AIM/ATA Trap team and speaking to young shooters at these and 4H Trap shoots. Our goals of growth and development of the team does not stop at gaining experienced shooters. We have held that it is our responsibility as educated shooters to promote and share our passion with those who have not had the opportunity to shoot as we have. In this aspect we have come up with coaches to bring in many shooters who have not even shot a firearm before into the sport and share with them the knowledge to compete at our level of the sport. In addition to this, we have made large strides to get more women into the shooting sports and now boast a team that has 10 lady shooters actively participating. Lastly to be as visible as possible, and prove to our state, as the only active team this year in the Kentucky, we have worked closely with the NSCA and our range to provide trappers for the Kentucky State NSCA and Zone Shoots this year, encouraging our team members to participate as much as possible and shoot with those who are at the pinnacle of the sport.

2 4. a. Mission: We are a member-driven organization formed for the enjoyment, camaraderie, sportsmanship and promotion of the clay target shooting sports. Safe gun handling, sighting, and accuracy are only a portion of the learning experience participation in the UK Trap and Skeet Club entails. We offer our members an opportunity to test their skills at shoots around the country against other universities. To be a member you have to be a full time student at the University of Kentucky and be in good academic standing to compete in the clay target shoots b. Goals: Our goal is to continue to spread the clay target sports throughout the state of Kentucky and abroad, to focus not only on growth and acceptance within our school, but to be looked upon as a level of achievement by those coming up in the sport. We believe it is our responsibility to promote the sport as best we can by being competitive within at the highest echelons of the sport and showing the university that we are serious contenders and worth continued support. c. Objectives: Our objective is to provide the top marksmen on the UK Trap and Skeet Team with the ability to go to the ACUI National Competition with very little of their own financial cost. Our objective is to have funding secured by early 2011 to provide for and cover the cost of the top 10 qualifying shooters (one squad of men and one of women) on the UK Team, including the first ever University of Kentucky Womans Squad. With the completion of these objectives we will further extend ourselves to woman wishing to get into our sport and show the ladies of the University of Kentucky that they have a place in shotgun sports and that they can compete against the ladies of many other schools. In addition to this we will further our exposure to the state, allowing us greater chance of sponsorship, recruitment, and sustainability in the future years of the team. 5. a. Participants allowed to be members of the National Championship Squad from the UK team are picked following qualifying at the UK Spring Meet in February. The top male and female shooters who have proven that they are prepared both academically and athletically will be chosen to be on the squads going to San Antonio. b. Progress will be monitored by the UK Trap and Skeet Team s Advisor and Executive Board throughout the year for those who are dedicated to the team and who are working to balance their time practicing, volunteering to promote the team, and time at school. This will ultimately lead up to qualifying prior to the ACUI Tournament. c. We will measure progress in the same manner as above. This will entail keeping personal shooting records, and determing if a rise in activity and membership will rise due to the availability of funding for the team to go to the national championships. 6. If our project is approved, final budgeting will be done by December 20, With budgeting in place we will then give our midterm report by January 17, The next date is February 16, This date will serve as the qualifying date for those wishing to travel to nationals. A shoot will be hosted by UK and the top 5 men and top 5 woman shooters will be asked to join the UK Team traveling to San Antonio. With our squads secured, we will travel to San Antonio in April of 2011 to compete. Upon return to Kentucky, a written final report will be writing on the success and participation of the team.

With our goal to expand our membership to even more experienced and competitive shooters, while at the same time expand our membership to more female shooters trying to enter the shotgun sport world, we will have many benchmarks along the way to make sure we are on our way to completing our goals. Historically our team has had shooters come in who were at the top of the sport in their respective junior leagues that thought they were over experienced for a college setting because there is somewhat little structure to our sport. This we believe will change the more we show we compete at the highest level, specifically at nationals, in addition to those meets around the country at individuals colleges. We will be able to evaluate this in a couple ways, specifically recruiting more shooters who have competed in the NSCA, NSSA, and ATA. Increases in membership from these regulatory bodies will be crucial to our development as a competitive team. In addition to this we hope to be more visual to many junior leagues such as 4H that have young kids who want to begin looking at colleges and continue to shoot. Our team traveling to nationals last year helped immensely in gaining recognition across the state and with that has seen our membership and interest in the team grow geometrically since past years. Our second goal to increase female participation in the sport can be simply measured by an increase of lady shooters joining the team as well as participating more in intercollegiate tournaments. Female athletes on UK s team have increase from 0 three years ago to twelve in We feel that as we open more economical outlets for them to compete, women from all over the University will feel welcome and excited at the prospect to join. At the end of the year we will host a review of our season and discuss our goals and how they were met, and how we can improve ways to meet our goals in the future. We think the executive members at the UK shooting team are firmly committed to the advancement of the sport in the state and increased involvement across our campus. 8. a. Itemized Budget is included. b. The whole of the UK shooting sports program is dedicated to the advancement of our organization. We have secured an advisor who is willing to travel and chaperone all of our trips out of state. In addition to this we recognize the need for NRA certified coaches in traveling to San Antonio and have secured the help of two NRA Level 1 Coaches specializing in Trap and Sporting Clays who have experience in participating in the ACUI National competition. As well as this, for our lead up to the national competition, we have secured the involvement of three other coaches to prepare the UK squad to participate at their highest level. To reach our other goal of encouraging participation from female athletes we have held secured the teams next president for 2011, Catherine Lacy, who is committed to the same ideals we are pursuing this year, so any gains will not be lost in subsequent years. Our club will not only go to nationals this year, but is fully involved in all shooting meets in the Mid-West and Eastern States. This year alone our team will travel to six away meets and host two of our own. This gives our teammates a lot of experience in varying disciplines of the sport.

4 In addition to traveling to our meets, we participate as much as possible at youth shooting meets, such as 4H state shoots, AIM meets, and the grand invitational in order to create a base of future members who are excited about the possibility of going to UK one day to shoot. One of the keys to the success of our team has been our ability to raise money over the past years. We specifically raise money in many aspects and time periods. To create an initial expenditures account for the team, each year members are required to pay a standard dues amount for the team to cover travel costs for the team and various pieces of apparel for each shooter. The next step is a campaign to draw support from local ranges in the form of monetary donations by a mailing campaign which has been more successful than we had ever thought and gives us the benefit of giving our team even more visibility throughout the state. Next the team will hold two meets at UK in order to fundraise for the team, these meets bring a great deal of money in for us to operate on and usually gives us the ability to purchase a new team gun. Another aspect of fundraising is to have a continuous stream of cash flow into the team. This is done by Tshirt and apparel sales throughout the year. We have sold over 400 tshirts this year alone, bringing a great deal of money back into the team. Lastly we look to fundraise through the range we shoot at and have been trappers for the shoots two times this year and use the money to pay for vests for the new shooters on the team. In small amounts we also receive monies from the University, but these only equal to being about $20 per person on the team, we actively seek grants from the Friends of the NRA, and local businesses as well. 9. The UK shooting team has tried to develop relationships with as many outside partners as possible. With these partnerships, our growth supports the growth of many other establishments. These partnerships, exist foremost with the University itself. This is seen in the fact that many shooters come to UK with the express purpose of shooting for our team, not specifically for the university. This means that UK benefits from our team in terms of students not just the recognition that the team gains. In addition a large stakeholder in the team is the Bluegrass Sportsman League. The greatest benefit that they receive from our team is financial support from our members. This is seen especially in the winter months when our team members are the only source of income at the range relying on us to stay open throughout their slowest months. Lastly, we have partnered closely with sponsors and agencies to promote their businesses on Tshirts and throughout our travels. Our sponsors have decided that we are an important part of their future, and aim to keep our partnerships alive.
