5 What is Horizon 2020? (1) 70.2 billion billion research and innovation funding programme ( ) A core part of Europe 2020, the Innovation Union & the European Research Area: Responding to the economic crisis to invest in future jobs and growth Addressing people s concerns about their livelihoods, safety and environment Strengthening the EU s global position in research, innovation and technology Coupling research to innovation "from research to retail", funding all forms of innovation Focus on societal challenges facing EU society, e.g. health, climate change, energy and transport Simplified access, for all companies, universities, institutes in all EU countries and beyond

7 The types of projects (funding actions) Research and Innovation Actions (RIA) new knowledge and/or to explore the feasibility of a new or improved technology, product, process, service or solution basic and applied research, technology development and integration, testing and validation on a small-scale prototype in a laboratory or simulated environment (100% direct + 25% indirect) x 100% Innovation Actions (IA) producing plans and arrangements or designs for new, altered or improved products, processes or services prototyping, testing, demonstrating, piloting, large-scale product validation and market replication (100% direct + 25% indirect) x 70%* Coordination and Support Actions (CSA) standardisation, dissemination, awareness-raising and communication, networking, coordination or support services, policy dialogues and mutual learning exercises and studies (100% direct + 25% indirect) x 100% SME Instrument: 3 phases (feasibility, demonstration/market, commercialisation) Fast Track to Innovation (funding for industry-led close to market projects) *unless not-for-profit legal status 7

10 Nature-based solutions To establish Europe as a leader in innovation through nature-based solutions (solutions inspired and supported by nature, while maintaining and/or enhancing natural capital) for improving our economic, social and environmental resilience Focus on demonstration activities in urban areas Front-runner (lighthouse) and follower cities model (min. 2 front-runners and 3 followers) International cooperation encouraged, esp. China Climate services Climate services the transformation of climate-related data and other information into customised products such as projections, forecasts, information, trends, economic analyses and assessments, and development and evaluation of solutions and any other service in relation to climate that may be of use for the wider society The challenge is to minimise risks and seize opportunities through customised services and products that mainstream climate change into decisions and actions at all levels Projects should seek to identify additional, complementary and follow-up funding (private and public), in particular European Structural and Investment Funds (esp. ERDF) 10

11 Proposed areas of support Demonstrating innovative nature-based solutions for climate and water resilience in cities (2016) Large scale demonstration activities including development, deployment, demonstration and upscaling of systemic nature-based solutions to enhance climate change and water resources resilience (incl. integrated urban and land use planning) in 2 front-runner cities. Develop planning to replicate in 3 follower cities. Innovation Action 70%, 10 m min EU contribution, min 5 countries: 2 front-runner and 3 follower cities, Stage 1 deadline March 2016 Cultural heritage as a driver for sustainable growth Heritage-led urban regeneration (2016) Large scale demonstration for heritage-led solutions, linking to nature-based solutions. Develop and deploy experimental pathways for regeneration, tackling economic, social and environmental problems. Innovation Action 70%, 5m min. EU contribution, 6 role-models and 3 replicators, Stage 1 deadline March 2016 Exploiting the added value of climate services Demonstration of climate services (2016) Demonstration activities incl. co-design and co-development of climate services through user-supplier (purveyor) collaboration, focusing on sectors and/or business networks where the current state of knowledge is advanced enough to allow deployment (project duration 2-3 years). No specific mention of cities but urban demonstration focus welcome. Innovation Action 70%, 5m EU contribution, min. 3 partners from 3 countries, Stage 1 deadline March 2016

12 Proposed areas of support Towards the next generation of water systems and services (2017) Large scale demonstration activities focusing on developing the urban water services of the future, going beyond waster supply sustainability (for example integration of management of water resources and provision of water services, re-use of treated wastewater and the use of desalinated water) Innovation Action 70%, 10m min. EU contribution, min. 3 partners from 3 countries, opens 2016 Large scale demonstrators on nature-based solutions for hydro-meteorological risk reduction at watershed/landscape level (2017) Focus on floods, droughts, storm surges and landslides, proposing nature-based solutions as an alternative to traditional engineering. Building territorial, socio-economic and ecological resilience and coherence in rural and natural areas to cope with climate change, natural hazards and ecosystem degradation Innovation Action 70%, 12m min. EU contribution, min. 3 partners from 3 countries, opens 2016 Nature-based solutions for inclusive urban regeneration (incl. deprived districts and neglected/abandoned areas) (2017) Focus on the role of nature-based, urban regeneration solutions in reshaping the built environment and enhancing social inclusion and quality of life. Incl. integrated urban and land use planning Innovation Action 70%, 10m min. EU contribution, min 5 countries: 2 front-runner and 3 follower cities, opens
