Know when to go to a health care provider. 3. List actions to take to keep from getting infected with swine flu. 4. Work through case studies to know when to seek emergency care. OVERVIEW FOR TRAINERS: This is the second lesson on swine flu. Much of this information is adapted from the CDC s article on Swine Influenza and You (2009). This lesson can be divided into two shorter lessons. Role Play: This role play involves two pigs and two people. (Clearly label the pigs, and have a sign that says Later.) 5 One pig is sick. He is coughing and sneezing. A second healthy pig comes up next to him. Later, the second pig begins to cough and sneeze. A person comes to feed the pigs and stops to rub them down or care for them. Later, he begins to cough and feel sick. His wife cares for him while he is sick. Later, she becomes sick, with a cough, fever, and chills. ----SHOWD questions---- S = What do you See? How is swine flu spread? 1. Swine flu is an illness of pigs. 2. Swine flu spreads between pigs. 3. People caring for sick pigs may also become infected with swine flu. 4. Swine flu may also spread between people, probably by coughing and sneezing. 5. Preventing swine flu that you can take to avoid getting sick with swine flu? Divide into small groups to discuss. Report back. B. Why is it important to wash your hands? And how should you do it? Discuss in large group. B. Hand washing C. Do you have any C. Technique suggestions about how and when to wash your hands? 1. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. 2. Throw away the tissue after you use it. 3. Wash your hands often with soap and water. 4. Wash your hands after you cough or sneeze. 5. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. 6. If there is a flu outbreak, stay away from crowded locations like subways and crowded buses. 7. Stay away from people with the flu. 8. Some people wear surgical masks for more protection. 9. If you get sick, stay home from school or work so that you don t infect others. 10. The flu vaccine may not protect against swine flu. 11. Swine flu is not spread by eating pork or bacon. 1. People may be infected by touching something with swine flu viruses on it. 2. Then they may touch their mouth, nose, or eyes. 3. So washing your hands may help prevent the spread of swine flu. 1. Wash your hands frequently. 2. Wash your hands every time that you cough or sneeze. 3. Wash your hands with soap and warm water for at least 15 to 20 seconds. 4. You can also use an alcohol-

In adults pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen D. Can you treat swine flu with D. Antibiotics antibiotics? 1. No. Swine flu is caused by a virus. 2. So antibiotics won t help. 3. But there are specific medicines to treat swine flu infections. 4. Check with your doctor or health care provider to see what medicines are available in your area. 5. Those medicines help people with swine flu to recover more quickly and to avoid serious complications of swine flu. IV. Case studies 25 IV. Case studies A. Divide into small groups A. He has been sleeping a lot, but now asks you to read him a story. What would you do? 1. Care for him at home but watch him carefully. 2. He may have the flu or even swine flu. 3. Rest, lots of liquids, give paracetemol or Tempra, DON T give aspirin. 4. Careful handwashing C. C. Your neighbor asks you to check on her child who is three years old. The girl has had a fever with vomiting and diarrhea. Her mouth is dry and her eyes look sunken. She refuses to drink a cup of water. She won t take ORS. 1. She looks dehydrated. 2. She refuses to take water or ORS. 3. She needs to be seen at the hospital or clinic right away. D. An old man on your street has chronic bronchitis. He always coughs a lot. But now he has the flu. He says that his chest hurts and that it is hard to breathe. What should he do? 1. He must go to the hospital right away. 2. He has a chronic medical problem. 3. And now he has chest pain and difficulty breathing. 4. This is an emergency. E. Your neighbor is really worried. Her daughter is in primary school and one of her classmates may have swine flu. Her daughter seems healthy. What should she do? 1. She is worried, but her daughter is not sick. 2. They may want to talk with a health care worker, but this is not an emergency. 3. Watch her daughter carefully for signs of illness. 4. Careful handwashing F. Another mother rushes to your house. Her baby is really sick! He is coughing and is breathing quickly. When you look at his chest, you see that he is using all his chest muscles in order to breathe. His lips look a little blue in color. What

5 5 should they do? 1. This is an emergency! 2. Go to the hospital or emergency room right away. 3. Her baby has trouble breathing, with rapid breathing and indrawing or retractions. 4. His blue lips mean that he is not getting enough oxygen or air. G. A young man on your street is an excellent carpenter. But he has been sick for a few days. His wife tells you that today he seems really confused and complains of being dizzy. But he doesn t want to go to the doctor. 1. He must see a doctor or health worker right away. 2.
