1 Lesson 25: Happiness Hi! Welcome to the Article Discussion lesson! Today s topic is about Happiness. Have fun learning English! Activity 1 Vocabulary and Expressions Directions: Listen and repeat. Vocabulary Finance The way in which money is used or handled. Decent Good enough but not the best. Fruitful Producing a good result; very productive. Ingredient One of the things that are used to make food, product, etc. Appreciation An ability to understand the worth, quality or importance of a job. 1
2 Activity 2 Article Directions: Read the article aloud with your teacher. Happiness The main purpose of life is to achieve and sustain happiness. We do what we do now because we want to feel happy. We interact with people around us because we want to feel happy. We celebrate special occasions because we want to feel happy. We continue breathing because it makes other people happy. Nonetheless, what does happiness really mean? There are a lot of words that relate to happiness, such as fortune, love and wealth. However, what are the standards of being happy? Are you happy when you have a little money, or having a lot would make you so? Is being alone a reason to be happy, or is it having company? Many people have a variety of definitions for the word happiness. Some people say that having a good job, a beautiful house, a beautiful or handsome wife or husband, no problems in finance, and great power would make them really happy, but not everyone can gain these. Hence, some others feel happy by just having a healthy family, a regular income just enough for daily expenses, a permanent job and a decent house and fruitful social relationships. In general, are these really the ingredient of happiness? Isn t it that all of these just cover one idea? Yes, that is appreciation. If you appreciate everything you have, you will be happy. No matter what amount of money you have, as long as you appreciate it, you will be happy. We just have to learn how to appreciate every little thing around us, and that could be equal to being really happy. Live a life full of appreciation, and surely, happiness will follow you. Material things sooner disappear, and so will your happiness if these are what make you happy, but appreciation goes all the way throughout your life. Thus, if appreciation counts your happiness, you can surely be happy forever. 2
