2 Invasion of Afghanistan In October, 2001 the U.S. launches an attack against the govt. of Afghanistan Called the Taliban Allowed Osama bin Laden to operate within their country Bush says you are with us, or with the terrorists
3 Bush Takes His Stand US President George W. Bush speaks to the UN General Assembly session Says they must confront the "grave and gathering danger" of Iraq - or stand aside as the US acts. Bush contends that Iraq is allied with Al-Queda In the same month British Prime Minister Tony Blair publishes a dossier on Iraq's military capability. States they are gathering WMD
4 March 17, 2003 U.N. arms inspectors evacuate Bush gives Saddam Hussein and his sons 48 hours to leave Iraq or face war. March 20, 2003 U.S. air strikes begin in Baghdad In the following days US and British ground troops enter Iraq from the south. Official war lasts about 1 year.
5 December 14, Saddam Hussein captured in Tikrit.
6 January 30, million people vote in elections for a Transitional National Assembly.
7 October, 2005 Saddam Hussein goes on trial on charges of crimes against humanity. Iraqi voters approve a new constitution, which aims to create an Islamic federal democracy.
8 Saddam Hussein is found guilty of crimes against humanity and sentenced to death. December 30, Saddam Hussein is executed by hanging. The war in Iraq does not seem to be achieving stability and safety in Iraq
9 Iraq Study Group report making recommendations to President Bush It warns of the prospect of a slide towards chaos, triggering the collapse of the government and a humanitarian catastrophe.
10 The Surge In January, 2007 President Bush sends an additional 20,000 troops to Iraq Known as The Surge Purpose was to stabilize Baghdad to allow its government to function
11 Effects of the Surge By late October, violence in Iraq has dropped by 70% Despite this 899 U.S. personnel die in 2007 The deadliest year since the invasion in 2003 Almost 25,000 Iraqi civilians die in the same year The Surge ends in July, 2008 and is largely seen as a success
12 Withdrawal? NOVEMBER 27, The Iraqi Parliament passes a bill setting the course for an end to the United States role in the war The agreement sets the end of 2011 as the date by which the last American troops must leave the country
