Exchange Report EDHEC Business School Sun HUNG Spring 2016 Year 3 BBA Finance & Economics

Part 1 - Monthly Activity Log January I arrived in France on 4 January. There was a bus tour organised by the school to group every exchange student to have a quick visit in Nice. Then, I spent the first 3 weeks in January familiarizing myself with Nice by travelling and walking around the district and mingling with my neighbor and classmates. Nice is a famous city for its beautiful sea view. It is a fascinating city which is located on the south east coast of France on the Mediterranean Sea. I had a great month visiting tourist spots. There are quite a number of supermarkets and shopping malls around the school and Nice city center. As I did not enroll in French course, which start in the very beginning of January, I did not have many lessons on January. I have also visited the city around Nice and Paris in the weekend with my friends. February More courses started this month. I met many new classmates in this month. It is not surprised that there were quite a lot of Mainland students in the

school as I enrolled in the Master 1 level programme. I celebrated Chinese New Year with those mainland students. We had a 10-day winter holiday started from mid February. I went to Poland and Slovakia with my UST friend who went exchange to Lille and Antibes. The general price level in Poland allow me buy clothes and dine out in an affordable way. Also, I visited the concentration camp in Krakow, Poland, which recorded the grave history in World War II. After the visit to this concentration camp, I had a serious reflection on it and that s why I would recommend my friends going to Krakow, Poland and the concentration camp. March In March, it is the starting date for the elective courses, which will finish within March. So it is super intensive. I had to go to school every week so I did not travel much. The classes of Macro Economics and Behavioral Finance started in this month require us to memorize and learn all the information within a very short time period. It is quite demanding. Nice is really small so sometimes I felt bored. During weekends, I went to some places near Nice with my friends. April We had a long Easter holiday in April. I went to UK for watching football matches and Spain with my friends who are also having exchange studies in Europe. I was the only exchange student from Hong Kong in EDHEC business school - Nice campus.

May The semester ended on 23rd May. It was super busy during May because I needed to attend lessons every day in the first two weeks and I had all my final exams in the third week. I had seven final exams so I spent most of time in May for revision. The exams were not very difficult even though I was in the Master Programme( M1 MMI level ). After the final examination, I meet my friends in Europe and went to travel around with them. Part 2 - General Exchange Information Visa Procedures To apply for a French study visa, you first need to visit the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong & Macau website and book an appointment. Application time slots are between 8:00 and 12:30 from Monday to Friday. There are many students applying for study visa so you are advised to book an appointment in advance. On the day of your appointment, you first need to have an academic interview with a consulate staff. He/she will ask you some simple questions about your exchange, such as whether you know French or not, why did you choose to go on an exchange to France, how much do you expect to spend per month in

France. After the interview, you have to submit all the required documents and pay the visa fee (around HKD520, depending on the exchange rate that day). Normally, the visa application takes about two weeks. Orientation Activities Before the school started, EDHEC organized a welcoming session for exchange students. At that day, the school first told us things that we needed to pay attention to, for example, school rules, how to login the school Wi-Fi, and some practical information like how to open a bank 4 account. Then, the school provided some refreshments. During the refreshment time, I made friends with other exchange students from all over the world. After the refreshment time, the school hired a tour bus and we went sight-seeing in Nice. Nice is a rather small city so we went to almost all tourist spots on that day. Also, if you want to set up a bank account, phone number and transportation card for the transportation within Nice, you can do all of this on welcoming session. International Services & Activities There is an international office in EDHEC. They provide useful information for international students. Every time I encountered problems while living in France, I went there and ask for help. The staffs were friendly and helpful. Accommodations The EDHEC Business School Nice campus is just an academic building. There are no student dormitories in school. Before going to France, you need to find accommodation. The school has partnerships with some private student residences for a limited number of studios. Also, it has partnerships with some private flat owners. Besides, you can find a furnished apartment through real estate agencies with discounted agency fees. Recommended by my exchange buddy, I rented the studio Résidence Studea. I think the location was quite good as it is quite near the school, just 20 minutes by walk. Also, there is a supermarket nears the studio, just 5 minutes by walk. Course Registration You need to register your courses before going to EDHEC. The school will send your information about courses. You can choose core courses and a maximum of 2 elective courses. You need to fill in the learning agreement form and send it back to EDHEC. There is no add/drop period so you

should choose your courses carefully. But the school may allow exchnage student to drop some of the courses in the first day of the school activity which is actually before the lessons. I know the school is going to change their whole courses structure & syllabus, for anyone who interested in EDHEC should take a look on its new fact sheet. Teaching & Assessment Methods EDHEC use ECTS credits, not term credit system. Each course is evaluated according to a grading scale ranging from 0 to 20, of which 10 is the passing grade. For exchange student, they will convert the score into grade. The grading scheme is set to be absolute grading instead of curve scheme. Teaching methods in EDHEC are quite similar to UST. There are case studies, tutorials and in-class group discussions. Most of the courses will take attendance every class. Being absent more than 2 lectures will be considered a fail grade. There are not mid-term exams, but many assignments or group projects. The workload is heavy even compare to HKUST. Cost/Expenses Cost of living in France is higher than Hong Kong. Nice is quite an expensive city in France. Dining out costs around 20 euro but foods at supermarket are not very expensive. So, I suggest students to cook themselves. Accommodation expense varies; usually student residences are more expensive. I spent around HKD 90,000 during my whole exchange study, including travelling. Health & Safety It is compulsory for students from other countries to buy the French National Student Health Insurance. It cost around 250 euro. Nice is an overall safe city, but you still need to be careful, especially when you come back home late. I heard some students got robbed at night. And, beware of pickpockets in crowded areas like buses and train stations. Nice is just attacked by ISIS. Please consider your own safety before your exchnage study. Transportation The main transportations within Nice are buses and tram. Buses and tram are runned by the same company so the ticket is same for the two. One single ticket costs 1.5 euro and it is valid for one 74-minute journey

including connections, but not valid for a round trip. Monthly buses and tram pass costs 20 euro. Buses run in the whole city while there is only one tram operates in city center. You can check the buses and tram timetable on the company website. Beware that after 9pm, there will only be night buses which operate at 30-minute intervals so you are advised to check the timetable if you go out late. However, you need to notice that it is so often for no transportation services due to strike. You can also rent the blue bike as your transportation means. Climate Nice is famous for its mild winter. I did not feel very cold during winter. Average temperature in winter is around 8 12 C. The weather was usually good. It is said that there are 300 sunny days per year in Nice. I loved the weather very much. Part 3 Items to Bring Passport with visa, ID card Passport photos Notebook Mobile phone Stationery Camera Credit cards & bank cards Adaptors Some euro cash Personal hygiene products Enough clothing Umbrella Rice cooker Cooking utensils
