RITE OF CONFIRMATION RENEWAL OF BAPTISMAL PROMISES After the Homily, an appropriate minister (DRE, CRE, Youth Minister, etc.) invites the Confirmation candidates. If possible, each candidate is called by name and comes individually to the sanctuary (or appropriate location). [If the Bishop has not given an instruction on the Sacrament of Confirmation during his Homily, he may address the candidates at this time in these or similar words (taken from the RCIA/Easter Vigil): (My dear Candidates) Born again in Christ by baptism you have become members of Christ and of his priestly people. Now you are to share in the outpouring of the Holy Spirit among us, the Spirit sent by the Lord upon his apostles at Pentecost and given by them and their successors to the baptized. The promised strength of the Holy Spirit, which you are to receive, will make you more like Christ and help you to be witnesses to his suffering, death, and resurrection. It will strengthen you to be active members of the Church and to build up the Body of Christ in faith and love.] [The Bishop now questions them:] DO YOU REJECT SATAN, AND ALL HIS WORKS, AND ALL HIS EMPTY PROMISES? Candidates: I DO. DO YOU BELIEVE IN GOD, THE FATHER ALMIGHTY, CREATOR OF HEAVEN AND EARTH? Candidates: I DO. DO YOU BELIEVE IN JESUS CHRIST, HIS ONLY SON, OUR LORD, WHO WAS BORN OF THE VIRGIN MARY, WAS CRUCIFIED, DIED, AND WAS BURIED, ROSE 1

FROM THE DEAD, AND IS NOW SEATED AT THE RIGHT HAND OF THE FATHER? 2

Candidates: I DO. DO YOU BELIEVE IN THE HOLY SPIRIT, THE LORD, THE GIVER OF LIFE, WHO CAME UPON THE APOSTLES AT PENTECOST AND TODAY IS GIVEN TO YOU SACRAMENTALLY IN CONFIRMATION? Candidates: I DO. DO YOU BELIEVE IN THE HOLY CATHOLIC CHURCH, THE COMMUNION OF SAINTS, THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS, THE RESURRECTION OF THE BODY, AND LIFE EVERLASTING? Candidates: I DO. ALL: THIS IS OUR FAITH. THIS IS THE FAITH OF THE CHURCH. WE ARE PROUD TO PROFESS IT IN CHRIST JESUS OUR LORD. AMEN. THE LAYING ON OF HANDS (The one who is presenting the candidate {sponsor} should be standing with him/her at this time.) [The Bishop faces the people with hands joined and sings or says:] MY DEAR FRIENDS, GOD OUR FATHER GAVE THE NEW BIRTH OF ETERNAL LIFE TO HIS CHOSEN SONS AND DAUGHTERS. LET US PRAY TO OUR FATHER THAT HE WILL POUR OUT THE HOLY SPIRIT TO STRENGHTEN HIS SONS AND DAUGHTERS WITH HIS GIFTS AND ANOINT THEM TO BE MORE LIKE CHRIST THE SON OF GOD. 3

[All pray in silence for a short time.] 4

[(In silence), the Bishop lays hands upon all the candidates (individually) or by extending his hand over them. The Bishop says:] ALL-POWERFUL GOD, FATHER OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, BY WATER AND THE HOLY SPIRIT YOU FREED YOUR SONS AND DAUGHTERS FROM SIN AND GAVE THEM NEW LIFE. SEND YOUR HOLY SPIRIT UPON THEM TO BE THEIR HELPER AND GUIDE. GIVE THEM THE SPIRIT OF WISDOM AND UNDERSTANDING, THE SPIRIT OF RIGHT JUDGMENT AND COURAGE, THE SPIRIT OF KNOWLEDGE AND REVERENCE. FILL THEM WITH THE SPIRIT OF WONDER AND AWE IN YOUR PRESENCE. WE ASK THIS THROUGH CHRIST OUR LORD. All: AMEN. THE ANOINTING WITH CHRISM [The appropriate minister (Deacon, Priest, DRE, CRE, Youth Minister, etc.) brings the Chrism to the Bishop. Each candidate goes to the Bishop or the Bishop may go to the individual candidates. The one who presented the candidate (sponsor) places his/her right hand on the latter s shoulder and gives the candidate s name to the Bishop; or the candidate may give his/her own name. The Bishop dips his right thumb in the Chrism and makes the Sign of the Cross on the forehead of the one to be Confirmed as he says]: N., BE SEALED WITH THE GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. [The newly Confirmed responds:] Candidate: AMEN. [The Bishop says:] PEACE BE WITH YOU. 5

[The newly Confirmed responds:] Candidate: AND ALSO WITH YOU. THE GENERAL INTERCESSIONS [The General Intercessions follow. (You may wish to include a petition for the newly Confirmed, their parents, godparents and sponsors; others preparing for Sacraments of Initiation; along with the prescribed order which can be found in the Sacramentary).] [Introduction:] My dear friends: let us be one in prayer to God our Father as we are one in the faith, hope, and love his Spirit gives. [Intercessions may be sung or recited.] All: [Conclusion:] God our Father, you sent your Holy Spirit upon the apostles, and through them and their successors you give the Spirit to your people. May his work begun at Pentecost continue to grow in the hearts of all who believe. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. If The Rite of Confirmation has been with Mass continue with the following. LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST [After the General Intercessions the Liturgy of the Eucharist is celebrated according to the Order of Mass, with these exceptions: a) the Profession of Faith is omitted, since it has already been made; b) some of the newly Confirmed may join those who bring the gifts to the altar; c) when Eucharistic Prayer I is used, the special form of Father, accept this offering, is said. 6

BLESSING [Instead of the usual Blessing, the following Blessing is used.] God our Father made you his children by water and the Holy Spirit: may he bless you and watch over you with his fatherly love. R/. Amen. Jesus Christ the Son of God promised that the Spirit of truth would be with his Church for ever: may he bless you and give you courage in professing the true faith. R/. Amen. The Holy Spirit came down upon the disciples and set their hearts on fire with love: may he bless you, keep you one in faith and love and bring you to the joy of God s kingdom. R/. Amen. May almighty God bless you, the Father, and the Son, {+} and the Holy Spirit. R/. Amen. 7

General: SOME COMMENTS ON THE RITE OF CONFIRMATION WHEN BISHOP CARLSON IS THE MINISTER OF THE SACRAMENT The Mass of the day is to be used (e.g. 2 nd Sunday of Easter, etc.) with the appropriate readings and prayers from the Lectionary, Book of the Gospels and Sacramentary. If special booklets are printed (e.g. Order of Worship ), it seems best not to include the prayers used from the Rite of Confirmation, including the Profession of Faith. The Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments has provided the following clarification on the question of parents serving as Confirmation sponsors: 1. As far as possible, a candidate for Confirmation should have a sponsor. 2. According to Canon 893, neither the father nor the mother of the candidate can be a sponsor. 3. However, even when there is a sponsor, parents may present their children for Confirmation. (By present is meant bringing or accompanying the candidate to the Bishop.) 4. In those cases where no sponsor is present, a parent presenting the child should not be called the godparent or sponsor. Perhaps the best designation would be presenter. Because of the relationship of Confirmation to Baptism, there is much to be said for using one s baptism name at Confirmation. Candidates should have nametags with the first and last name, and the Confirmation name. First Line: First Name & Last Name, Second Line: Confirmation Name (underlined). Please use the largest font that will fit on your name tags. Musicians please note that there is NO instrumental or sung music during the The Laying On of Hands. However, instrumental or an appropriate song may be used during the Anointing With Chrism. Because of the close connection of the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist) it is preferable that Communion Under Both Kinds be part of the celebration (especially when the celebration is the Completion of the Sacraments of Initiation (i.e. Confirmation AND Eucharist). The option of Liturgy of the Word with the Rite of Confirmation Outside of Mass may be used especially in the case of most of the candidates not having received the Sacrament of First Eucharist. Procession: It seems good to have the Confirmation candidates as part of the procession. Depending on circumstances, the sponsors can be included too. Conclusion: The celebration usually takes somewhat between an hour and an hour-and-half. Inasmuch 8

as those confirmed have been called upon or come forward several times it seems best that any special presentations (e.g. certificates, acknowledgements, etc.) to those confirmed be done at the reception afterward rather than before the final Blessing of the Mass. 9
