1 Field Trip Planning Guide The mission of Nahant Marsh is to preserve and enhance the ecological integrity of the marsh and to foster wonder appreciation, interaction, and stewardship of the natural world through education.

2 Nahant Marsh Education Center Field Trip Planning Guide The Naturalists at Nahant Marsh Education Center know that learning about our earth s natural resources is a vital component to a child s education. Field trips to natural areas provide a hands-on learning experience that can enrich lessons taught back in the classroom. Our goal is to provide educational and meaningful lessons about the natural world and to nurture a strong bond between the student and their natural environment. This guide has been developed to help teachers and other youth group leaders plan a fun and effective educational trip. Please read carefully. Pre-field trip info 1. Review environmental education programs offered. If you would like a program that is not on the list, our staff can tailor make a program to fit your curriculum needs. 2. Review the procedures in the guide. 3. Contact Amy Loving, AmeriCorps Naturalist Supervisor at aloving@eicc.edu or call , to select possible dates for your field trip. 4. Cost is $5 per child. No charge for teachers and adult chaperons. Discounts are potentially available. Call for more details. 5. Let the naturalist know before the day of the field trip if there are any students with special needs in your group. 6. Make transportation arrangements. 7. Consider alternative programs in case of inclement weather. Programs that can be conducted indoors are marked with an asterisk*.

3 Tips on planning a successful trip 1. Environmental Education programs typically last for 45 minutes each and most outdoor activities work best with smaller groups of students. We recommend no more than 100 students per visit. 2. Select adult chaperons for the field trip. Nahant Marsh recommends 1 adult for every students. Adult chaperons should understand that they are responsible for administering discipline and are encouraged to take part in the activity. 3. Divide students into groups prior to arrival and make name tags for students. 4. Be sure to review all rules with leaders, adult chaperons, and students (See Nahant Marsh Field Trip Rules and Rules for Outdoor Dress). 5. Bring a first-aid kit. Nahant Marsh will also have first-aid kits on site. 6. Students will need to bring a sack lunch. Consider dividing students into groups to make lunch time easier. Recycling bins and garbage cans will be provided. 7. Keep in mind that teaching in an outdoor classroom often presents unexpected occurrences and discoveries. Naturalists may stray from the program for a moment to point out a soaring eagle overhead or stop to catch a snake that crossed the trail. Field Trip Rules All participants including teachers, adult chaperons and students should be familiar with these rules prior to arriving at Nahant Marsh. 1. Our number one rule is RESPECT! Respect for naturalists, teachers, adult chaperons, other students, plants, animals, and the education center. 2. Nahant Marsh is a nature preserve. A nature preserve is an area of land that is protected and managed in order to protect a particular type of habitat and its flora and fauna which are often rare or endangered. Removal of plants or wildlife is prohibited. Remember to take only your memories and leave nothing but footprints.

4 Inclement Weather/Rain Date & Cancellation Policy In the case of light to moderate rain with no lightning, we will continue all programs as scheduled. Teachers are urged to check the weather forecast the day before a field trip and remind students to bring rain/warm gear with them because they will be going outside rain or shine. Programs will be canceled only by the schools, not by Nahant Marsh staff, due to heavy rain, lightning, tornado watches or warnings, thunderstorms, wind chill and snow. The naturalist should be contacted immediately if the school decides not to attend a scheduled field trip. The naturalist may be contacted at the office at Due to high demand for services, alternate inclement weather/rain dates will no longer be scheduled for school groups at the time they schedule their field trips. If a trip has to be cancelled due to weather, teachers may reschedule at that time. Outdoor Dress Guidelines All field trip participants, including teachers, students and adult helpers should be familiar with these guidelines before coming on the field trip. Please strongly stress these guidelines with parents in any permission slips that may be sent home. 1. Students should dress in old clothes because outdoor activities usually require getting dirty. Old shoes, rubber boots, or snow boots are a must-have for outdoor activities. 2. Long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and shoes and socks are recommended for protection from poison ivy, prickly bushes, insects, and chilly weather. Participants are strongly cautioned against wearing shorts and sandals. 3. Spring, fall and even summer mornings can be cool, so be prepared. Dressing in layers is a good idea in any season. For late fall, winter and early spring activities, students should have mittens or gloves, and a hat, shoes and boots insulated enough to keep their feet warm. Rain gear is also very important as programs will not be canceled or moved inside because of light to moderate rain. 4. Sunscreen and insect repellent will not be supplied by the naturalist and should be provided by parents or teachers if needed.

5 Environmental Education Programs The following programs are available at Nahant Marsh. These programs are usually 45 minutes and can be adapted for most age ranges. This guide is meant to be a brief description of our activities, but they can be tailored to match any curriculum needs. Please note some programs are seasonal and species covered are found locally. HIKES Bird Hike: Students will be guided on a hike to our bird blind. They will learn about and identify the different types of birds found at Nahant. Nature Hike: Students will be taken on a hike around Nahant Marsh. They will learn about and identify the different habitats, plants, and animals that are found here. Tree Hike: Students will be taken on a hike where they will learn about the different tree species found at the marsh and how to identify them. Forestry tools will also be used to survey trees. Wildflower Hike: Students will be guided on a hike through Nahant s Prairie. They will learn about and identify the wildflowers found in our prairies. Un-Natural Hike: Litter and waste are a contestant problem in parks and other public areas. Students will take a hike and see how many un-natural items they can find. Concepts of waste management and recycling will be discussed. Student will participate in an activity called Trash timeline to learn about the length of decomposition for common trash items. ANIMALS Animal Adaptations: A general study on adaptations. Students will learn the definition of adaptations and how animals have different adaptations to help them survive in their respective environments.* Animal Signs: Animals leave many signs that they have been in an area including tracks, scat, and food leftovers. Learn how to tell which animal leaves which sign. Track replicas, scat replicas, and a few other objects will show what to look for in the wild. Bird Beak Adaptations: Bird beaks are adapted to the type of food a bird eats. Students will learn about different kinds of beaks and participate in and activity to show which kind of beaks helps birds eat different kinds of food. *

6 Birds of Prey: Raptors are meat eating birds that have special adaptations to help them survive. Skulls, feathers, wings and mounts will be shown to help students learn about the adaptations, diets and habitats of these birds.* Dabblers vs. Divers: Some ducks gather food differently than others. Learn the difference between a dabbling and diving duck. Specimen of common species will be shown. * Dragonflies vs Damselflies: Dragonflies and damselflies are common insects found in a wetland. Students will learn about their life cycles, adaptations, diets and how to tell the difference between a dragonfly and damselfly. Fish: Many types of fish live in the upper Mississippi River. Students will learn the difference between different kinds of fish, what bodies of water they prefer, and food preference. Insects: Students will learn about the insects and the role they play. They will learn about their habitats, food sources, and adaptations. Students will then use nets to catch insects found in Nahant s prairie. Land vs. Aquatic Turtles: Land and aquatic turtles have adaptations that allow them to survive in their respective habitats. Live aquatic and land species will be shown and their different adaptations, diets, and habitats will be discussed. * Mammals: Mammals are one of the most popular groups of animals. Students will be introduced to the habitats, food sources, and adaptations of mammals found in Iowa. They will also learn about the history of the fur trade. Students will be able to see and touch some of the skins and skulls of these animals.* Mussels of the Upper Miss: Mussels are the most endangered species in the U.S. Learn about the adaptations, diets, life cycle, and history of these shelled creatures. Mussel shells will be shown and students will learn to identify common species. * Predator vs. Prey: Students will learn what a predator and prey are and how they affect each other. Students will also participate in a game to help them understand the relationship between predator and prey. Reptiles vs. Amphibians: How can you tell the difference between a reptile and an amphibian? Students will be introduced to the cold-blooded creatures of Iowa and how they differ. They will learn about their characteristics, habitats and food sources, and will be able to touch or hold some live reptiles that we house at the education center.* Snakes: Many people have a fear of snakes. Learning about how snakes live can help people feel more comfortable with these scaly creatures. Live snakes will be shown and students will learn about their adaptations, diets, and habitats. *

7 Wetland Mammals: Mammals who spend much of their life in water have special adaptations to help them survive. Students will learn about the different species found in Midwest wetlands and about their diets and characteristics. * Winter Birds: Many bird species stay here in winter. Discover what species you can find at your bird feeders and how to attract them. Participants will make a feeder to take home. This program is seasonal. * WATER Carmen the Carp: Students will follow along as Carmen travels downstream to explore her world. Through this story, students will learn about different water pollutants and how they affect aquatic plants and animals. * Mississippi Flyway: Many species of birds use the Mississippi River as a navagation route for migration. Learn about some common species that can be spotted during spring and fall migrations. Students will participate in an activity to learn about what happens to bird psecies during migration. Mississippi River Watershed: Students will learn what a watershed is and how the river connects the land and states that surround it. Students will also identify major industries in those states and discuss why people settled in thses locations. * Pond Study: Students will catch and identify macro invertebrates from the marsh. They will learn how these macro invertebrates are indicators of water quality and what that means for Nahant. This program is seasonal. Stream Table: Students will learn about the geological history of Iowa and the history and changes that have been made to the Mississippi River. They will participate in a hands-on activity to show them how streams and levees work.* Water Quality Testing: Students will use water testing kits to sample the water in the marsh. They will learn what each test is and how it is used to determine the water quality for the marsh.* PLANTS Cattails: Cattails are known for their versatility. Students will learn about the importance of cattails in a wetland and about historical uses of the plant. Students will be able to make toy ducks and/or mats out of cattails. This program is seasonal.

8 Edible and Medicinal Plants: Students will learn about edible and medicinal plants found in our local area. They will learn about past uses of these plants and how they are still used today. Forestry: Geared towards older students. Students will how to identify trees. They will also learn about methods used to survey forests. Tools like a tree core and DBH tape will be used. Trees & Leaves: Students will learn the basics about trees and how to identify leaves. This program will include a hike and hands on activity based on the age of the students. Plants and the Pioneers: Students will go on a hike and learn about the plants that pioneers and Native Americans used for medicine, dyes, food, and shelter. Rotten Log: Students will investigate organisms found in a rotten log. They will learn about decomposition and microhabitats. Wildflower Hike: Students will be guided on a hike through Nahant s Prairie. They will learn about and identify the wildflowers found in our prairies. RENEWABLE ENERGY Renewable Energy: Students will learn about renewable and non-renewable resources. They will participate in a hands-on activity to see how renewable energy resources work. * Solar Energy: Students will learn about solar energy and how energy from the sun is used. Basics about how plants, animals and people use solar energy will also be discussed. Students will perform an insulation experiment to test passive energy. OUTDOOR SKILLS GPS Scavenger Hunt: Students will learn about the functions of a GPS and then participate in a scavenger hunt. Orienteering: Students will learn how to use a compass and map to navigate a course around the marsh. Team Building: Includes various activities that promote teamwork, communication, creativity, and leadership. Wilderness Survival: Students will learn important tips and skills to help them survive in the wild. This program will cover the basics including shelter building, how to filter water, and how to build a fire.

9 NATIVE AMERICAN CULTURE Native American Hunters: Native Americans hunted many types of animals like buffalo, elk and deer. Learn their hunting techniques and how they used all parts of the animal for shelter, tools, food, art and more. Specimens of animal parts and furs will be shown. If time allows, student will practice using an atlatl. Native American Games: Game playing was called the little brother of war by Native Americans because the games taught many skills the youngsters needed to master for their future adult roles. Students will play games that were common to Native American children. Native American Stories: Native Americans have a rich tradition of passing down their history through storytelling. Students will listen to stories and then act out one of the tales. GEOLOGY Soil Science: Students will learn about the many factors that contribute to the formation of soil. Students will use test soil for ph, nutrients, light and use soil sieves to separate out soils by size. Rocks & Fossils: Fossils are clues to Iowa s past and can tell us about the plants and animals that lived in this area long, long ago. Students will learn how fossils are formed. Rock, mineral and fossil specimen will be shown.* GAMES Nature Games: Students will play various games that teach about general nature concepts. Some common games include bat vs. moth and stream jump, Predator vs. Prey: Students will learn what a predator and prey are and how they affect each other. Students will also participate in a game to help them understand the relationship between predator and prey. Native American Games: Students will play games that were common to Native Americans *These programs can be conducted indoors; consider them for alternative programs for inclement weather.
