1 Church3TWENTYONE CONGRATULATIONS! Your decision to be baptized in water is a public declaration that you are a follower of Jesus a Christian. At Church3TwentyOne we believe baptism by immersion, in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, is commanded by God; that it is subsequent to conversion, that it is not required for salvation, but it s an obedient expression of an inward work of the Spirit of God. (Matthew 3:13-17) BAPTISM INFORMATIONAL MEETING: We ask that you attend a pre-baptism meeting at 5PM at the church campus on the evening of the baptism service. Please bring with you your swimsuit and a towel. We will provide you with a t-shirt you can keep as a reminder of your baptism. NEXT STEPS: Should you decide to be baptized: 1. Complete the attached application and bring it with you to the BAPTISM meeting. 2. Pray that your baptism will be a deeply meaningful, spiritual experience in your life. 3. Invite family and friends at attend so that they can share the joy of this experience with you. If they do not have a personal relationship with Jesus, this will be a great opportunity for them to see you following the Lord in water baptism and might encourage them to take the next steps in their own spiritual journey. WATER BAPTISM SCRIPTURES Water baptism is a public declaration that you are a Christian. WATER BAPTISM IS NOT AN OPTION. Jesus said in Matthew 28:19,20: Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Jesus last instructions to His disciples were that as they were going, to teach and baptize, and if it was a command for them to baptize, then we understand it is also a command for us to be baptized. Peter makes that very clear in Acts 2:38, Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Repent and be baptized is a command. WATER BAPTISM DOES NOT CLEANSE US OF OUR SINS. Paul stated in Romans 10:9,10: If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved. It is not water baptism that cleanses us from sin. It is the repentance (turning) of our heart and subsequent confession of our mouth that bring salvation. Peter, in 1 Peter 3:21, says that water baptism does not save us, but that it is the, as a response to God from a clean conscience. So when you enter the waters of baptism, your sins are already forgiven. They have already been washed away, not by water, but by the blood of the Jesus because of His substitutionary death on the cross for you.
2 WATER BAPTISM IS BY IMMERSION. The word baptism actually means, immerse. In Matthew 3:16, we read that Jesus, after his baptism came up out of the water In Acts 8:38, we read about a man from Ethiopia who decided to follow Jesus, He ordered the carriage to stop, and they went down into the water, and Philip baptized him. It was obvious this was a large enough body of water that both of them could go down into it. WATER BAPTISM FOLLOWS REPENTANCE OR TURNING TO CHRIST. Again, in Acts 2:38 Peter says, Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Any form of baptism prior to personal repentance is scripturally invalid. WATER BAPTISM INDICATES TWO IMPORTANT THINGS. When you walk into the waters of baptism, you are publicly announcing, I am a believer and follower of Jesus Christ. 1. I HAVE DIED TO THE OLD ME. In Romans 6:6-11, we read, We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin. For when we died with Christ we were set free from the power of sin. And since we died with Christ, we know we will also live with him. We are sure of this because Christ was raised from the dead, and he will never die again. Death no longer has any power over him. When he died, he died once to break the power of sin. But now that he lives, he lives for the glory of God. So you also should consider yourselves to be dead to the power of sin and alive to God through Christ Jesus. 2. I HAVE BEEN RAISED WITH JESUS TO A NEW LIFE. In 2 Corinthians 5:17, Paul tells us, This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!
