3 Key Findings Continuous integration and delivery vendors tend to spread themselves across the lifecycle with intriguing overlaps and budgetary splits based on buyer audience. Progress beyond continuous integration to delivery and deployment is limited today, viewable as an adoption funnel with a series of stepwise prerequisites. III

4 Executive Summary INTRODUCTION The continuous integration and delivery (CI-CD) market initially emerged out of a combination of a number of disciplines including software testing, release engineering and IT operations. Overall, the driving business force has been the need to increase agility while simultaneously lowering risk, with IT increasingly hearing both of those demands from the rest of the business. These same demands underlie many other current trends, such as the strongly correlated rise of DevOps as well as emerging interest in a new architectural approach dubbed microservices. In this report, we focus on the application delivery pipeline without delving into the parallel discipline of infrastructure automation. Application delivery has grown increasingly important with the rise of the software-defined business, with startups like Uber, Airbnb, Tesla, Twilio and more disrupting their respective verticals. To compete, companies need the capability to deliver quality at speed, which are at apparent odds with an old world view but can be rationalized with increasing levels of automation.
