3 Level 1 Unit 4: Introducing basic skin care treatments Controlled assessment material Information for teachers This assessment is provided as an example only. Consortia should produce their own assessments in line with the assessment section of the unit, based on their local delivery circumstances. Overview The purpose of this assessment is for learners to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of developments in the beauty sector by producing a collage for a Beauty Salon s website and carrying out skin care treatments. This assessment is based on the case study below. It is taken under controlled conditions, in which the learner will complete two tasks. The first is to create an annotated collage for use as learning resources. The second is to deliver skin care treatments. The learner will be responsible for choosing their own format when creating Task 1 and will work on clients, models or peers for Task 2. Time The overall time allowed for this assignment is up to eight hours under controlled conditions. Task 1 three hours Task 2 five hours. Resources Learners may require access to word processing software and presentation software for Task 1. They will need access to suitable products, materials, tools and equipment for the production of Task 2. Supervision Learners will need to be supervised when producing the presentation and at all times during the practical activity. Collaboration Learners can discuss the assignment and make notes in groups but they must produce individual responses to Tasks 1 and 2.

6 Level 1 Unit 4: Introducing basic skin care treatments Controlled assessment material Information for learners Assessment overview For this assessment you are required to: produce an illustrated piece of work for a website take photos of your work when delivering skin care treatments and annotate them as a step by step guide review your treatments and make suggestions for improvements. Time You will have up to eight hours to complete the assessment: Task 1 three hours Task 2 five hours. Collaboration You can discuss the assessment and make notes in your group but you must produce individual responses to Tasks 1 and 2. Roles Your teacher will observe you carrying out the treatments and will produce a witness statement for each treatment. You will work on yourself, models or peers for Task 2. Where you work on yourself your teacher will play the role of the client for the consultation. Assessment brief The Garden male and female beauty salon You are an assistant at The Garden, a beauty salon for men and women that also specialises in training. The salon has recently set up its own website and they are uploading some training materials for e- learning to be used by the salon s new trainees. A lot of their existing training materials are quite old and not suitable for the website. All the employees at the salon are contributing towards the new website. The manager of the salon has asked you to produce some of the skin care resources because you have shown that your understanding of these has helped you when delivering treatments to clients in the salon. You are going to produce annotated pages about: developments in the beauty sector; skin structure and skin condition; skin care services and products offered by the salon. The salon also needs some fresh new images for the website of skin care routines so you will provide a step by step guide of how to safely carry out skin care treatments.
7 Task 1 Produce training materials for the website (24 marks) covering Learning Outcomes 1, 2 and 3 Individually you will produce an annotated collage suitable for the website to show the following: the perceptions of facial beauty, what influences these perceptions and how technological developments have influenced the beauty industry the skin structure, common skin conditions and factors affecting the condition of skin the purpose, benefits, disadvantages and main care and facial treatments how to use and maintain tools and equipment the purpose and benefits of products and materials the reasons why a client might buy professionally recommended skin care products over retail product lines the reasons why you should adapt skin care and cleansing treatments for male and female clients. Your collage will be used as training materials so should be engaging and interesting for the trainees using them. You must use appropriate beauty terminology when producing the learning materials. Task 2 (24 marks) covering Learning Outcome 4 Independently, you will perform a minimum of two skin care treatments on male and/or female clients and take photos of your work for the website. You will annotate the photos as a step by step guide with the following: how you safely prepared for the treatment how you safely carried out the treatment how you would change/improve your treatment next time. You must make reference to the following when describing safe working methods: using personal protective equipment using manufacturers instructions safe preparation methods professional behaviour taking account of supervisor s instructions.
