Determiig Supported Equipmet The supported Macitosh ad PC systems, decks, DV devices, burers, ad drives are listed o the Avid Web site. FireWire is a peripheral stadard for trasmittig data, iveted by Apple Computer, Ic. The stadard has become a cross-platform idustry stadard called IEEE Soy Corporatio also uses the IEEE 1394 stadard ad calls it i.link. 4 Settig Up Your Software-Oly Avid Editig System Turig O Your Equipmet After you have coected the moitor, mouse, keyboard, ad speakers (if ordered) usig the documetatio provided by the vedor, tur o the various compoets. You eed to do this to make sure your system works properly before you istall ay ew hardware or Avid software. If your system works before you istall the hardware, but ot after you istall the hardware, you kow where to start troubleshootig. If ay part of your system fails to tur o, make sure its electrical cord is plugged sugly ito a appropriate electrical outlet or power strip. For more iformatio, see the istructios that came with the hardware or computer. For iformatio o your operatig system features, such as the desktop ad icos, see your computer system documetatio. To check the system before you istall the hardware: 1. Tur o all peripheral uits, such as the exteral drives, moitor, ad speakers. 2. Tur o your computer. If this is the first time the computer has bee tured o, you might have to aswer questios related to the licesig ad setup of the operatig system. 3. Log i so that the desktop appears. 4. Do ay type of basic computer operatios, like checkig the disks or ruig ay program, to see if the system seems to be workig properly. 5. Tur off the computer. Istallig Boards Purchased Separately You eed to follow additioal istallatio istructios if you have purchased supported versios of a separate 1394 board ad a separate PCI SCSI board. 4

5 Istallig Boards Purchased Separately The operatig system uses its plug-ad-play capability to istall the software for the boards the first time you tur o the system after the boards are istalled. If the software is ot available o the system disk ad was istalled automatically, a software istallatio wizard appears. Follow the istructios the wizard provides to istall the software for the boards from the CD-ROM or floppy disk provided with the board. Istallig a Additioal 1394 Board If you purchased a Avid supported system, you do ot eed to istall a 1394 board ito the system. Your system has a built-i 1394 port. A secod 1394 board is oly ecessary if you are plaig to use FireWire drives at the same time as your editig equipmet. To istall the 1394 board: 1. Test your system, as explaied i Turig O Your Equipmet o page Tur off your system. 3. Follow the istructios i the documetatio that ships with your computer ad istall the supported 1394 board. The 1394 board ca be either a PCI versio or a PCMCIA versio that is OHCI-compliat. At this time, there is o specific PCI slot assigmet for the 1394 board i desktop computers. If you have purchased oe of the 1394 boards supported by Avid, a ew driver for the board is istalled with the Avid editig software. Istallig the PCI SCSI Board To istall a PCI SCSI board: 1. Test your system, as explaied i Turig O Your Equipmet o page Tur off your system. 5

At this time, there is o specific PCI slot assigmet for the PCI SCSI board i desktop computers. See Preparig Your Drives (Widows oly) o page 7 for more disk iformatio. Coectig the Applicatio Key The applicatio key, commoly referred to as a dogle, allows the Avid software to ru o your computer. Figure 1 shows the applicatio key. Figure 1 Applicatio Key c To ru your Avid applicatio: 1. Coect the applicatio key to a USB port o the computer. The computer sees the applicatio key whe it is startig. 2. If you coect the applicatio key after you start the computer, restart the computer. Applicatio keys cotaied i a ew Avid editig applicatio kit ca be moved betwee Widows ad Macitosh systems. However, a applicatio key that has bee updated to work with Avid editig applicatio from a previous release by usig a versioer or updater floppy disk caot be moved betwee Widows XP systems ad Mac OS X systems. Be careful you do ot lose the applicatio key. Your Avid software does ot fuctio without it. If you lose your applicatio key, you must purchase aother key from Avid at the full market cost of your Avid editig software. 6

7 Preparig Your Drives (Widows oly) Preparig Your Drives (Widows oly) There are two types of disk drives defied by the Widows operatig system: Basic Disk drives allow disks to be divided ito partitios. This type of drive is supported by Avid. Dyamic Disk drives allow disks to be divided ito volumes. Disk drives must be Dyamic if you wat to stripe, mirror, or use disks i the RAID style. To use Avid editig software o your system, your drives eed to be partitioed ad formatted properly. Partitioig allows you to divide a drive ito more tha oe sectio if eeded, ad formattig places a file system o each partitio. For more iformatio, see your Microsoft documetatio. Supported File Systems (Widows Oly) Your operatig system supports three types of file systems: Two types of the File Allocatio Table (FAT): FAT 16 ad FAT 32. FAT 16 is primarily used whe backward compatibility is eeded o operatig systems such as MS-DOS or other versios of Widows. The ew FAT 32 file system is o loger limited to a 2-GB partitio size. Avid supports the FAT 32 file system. The New Techology File System (NTFS). NTFS affords the user security, compressio, ad other file recovery features. Drives employig NTFS support partitios of ay size. Avid supports the NTFS file system. 7

8 Settig Up Your Software-Oly Avid Editig System c Whe you partitio your drives, Avid recommeds: Selectig NTFS from the pop-up meu whe you partitio your disk drives for use o desktop computers Selectig FAT 32 from the pop-up meu whe you partitio your disk drives for use o laptop computers Oe of your iteral disk drives (ormally desigated drive C) has a partitio that cotais the operatig system. This drive might be labeled System or Boot. You should ot reformat this partitio uless you eed to rebuild your system disk drive. Coectig the Editig Equipmet Make sure you have completed the setup iformatio provided with your computer. This iformatio provides istructios for settig up your computer ad attachig the moitor, speakers, keyboard, ad mouse. The documetatio that comes with your equipmet explais the locatios of cable coectios ad how to coect the cables. The terms FireWire, IEEE 1394, ad i.link refer to the same iterface stadard. I this documet, the term 1394 is used. This sectio explais the coectios betwee the editig equipmet ad the computer i geeral terms because you might be coectig your editig equipmet to a supported system ruig the Widows XP Professioal operatig system or the Mac OS X operatig system. Also your editig equipmet might be a digital camera, a digital video deck, or a aalog video deck coected to a trascoder. The cameras, video decks, ad trascoders i the illustratios represet the type of equipmet explaied i the text. The actual equipmet you have might be differet. 8

9 DC IN 6V DV IN / OUT R AUDIO L VIDEO S-VIDEO IN OUT Coectig the Editig Equipmet 1394 Cable Coectors The coectios o your computer system ad your editig equipmet (such as a digital camera, digital video deck, or trascoder used with a aalog video deck) have either four pis or six pis. Therefore, the 1394 cables used to coect this equipmet eed either 4-pi or 6-pi coectors (see Figure 2). 4-pi 6-pi Figure Coectors Coectig a 1394 Cable You use a 1394 cable to coect a digital video deck, a digital camera, or a trascoder (coected to a aalog video deck) to a PCI or PCMCIA 1394 board i your computer, or directly to a 1394 port at the rear of a Macitosh system (see Figure 3). 10 Settig Up Your Software-Oly Avid Editig System 1394 cables are categorized by the umber of pis i the coector at each ed of the cable (see 1394 Cable Coectors o page 9). The followig three types of 1394 cables are available: 4-pi to 4-pi 4-pi to 6-pi 6-pi to 6-pi Before coectig a 1394 cable, you must determie the type of 1394 cable you eed. For example, you might eed to coect a digital camera that has a 4-pi coectio to a Macitosh system that has a 6-pi coectio. I this case you would eed the 4-pi to 6-pi cable (see Figure 4). 11 Coectig the Editig Equipmet Coectig a Computer Without a Cliet Moitor To coect equipmet without a Cliet moitor to your computer: 1. Coect the moitor, speakers, keyboard, ad mouse to the rear of your computer usig the documets that came with your desktop computer. If you have a laptop, coect oly eeded compoets. 2. Coect the 1394 cable from a digital video deck, a digital camera, or a trascoder (coected to a aalog video deck) to a PCI or PCMCIA 1394 board i your computer, or to the rear of a supported Macitosh system (as explaied i the documetatio that comes with your equipmet). Figure 5 shows a example of a digital video deck coected to a PCI 1394 board. The computer uses the same 1394 cable to iput ad to output data to ad from a digital video deck, a digital camera, or a trascoder (coected to a aalog video deck). The output data ca be recorded or used to cotrol a digital video deck or digital camera. You ca output data through a trascoder to be recorded o a aalog video deck. To remotely cotrol the aalog video deck, you must use the serial port. See Cotrollig a Aalog Video Deck (Widows) o page Tur o power to all peripheral equipmet ad the to the system. 12 Settig Up Your Software-Oly Avid Editig System Coectig a Cliet Moitor To fully uderstad how a Cliet moitor receives data from a Avid editig system, it is helpful to uderstad how Timelie iformatio is processed ad set to the system moitor from your software-oly Avid editig system (see Figure 6). You tur real-time effects o or off by clickig the Toggle Digital Video Out butto i the Timelie. Real-time effects are o whe the butto is gree ad off whe the butto is blue. Whe real-time effects are o (gree), the desktop display shows the sequece with the uredered effects precalculated. Whe real-time effects are off (blue), the desktop display shows the sequece displayed with a full-resolutio sigal without the digital effects. You might see a differece with real-time effects tured o or off depedig o what video quality mode is selected with the Video Quality Meu butto. For more iformatio, see Viewig Video Quality i the Help. Whe you tur real-time effects o or off, you also determie the path of the video output sigal from the Avid editig system to a Cliet moitor (see Figure 6). If you have real-time effects o (gree), the desktop display shows the sequece with uredered effects precalculated i Full Quality or Draft quality. Also, whe real-time effects are o, the video sigal is ot set out through the 1394 port coectio ad is set out oly through a aalog coectio (S-Video or VGA) to a Cliet moitor. The aalog video sigal is always available whether you have real-time effects o or off. If you have real-time effects off (blue), the desktop display shows the sequece displayed with a full-resolutio sigal without the digital effects. The sigal is set out through the 1394 port coectio to the Cliet moitor attached to a digital video deck or to the digital camera actig as a Cliet moitor. 12

13 Coectig the Editig Equipmet To cofigure a dual-port video display board ad use the secod port as a Cliet moitor: You eed a dual-port video display board istalled i your Avid editig system to use a secod system moitor as a Cliet moitor. t t (Widows) I the Widows Display Properties dialog box, select the Settig tab ad click the Advaced butto to look for the cloe settig. The locatio of these settigs varies depedig o the video display board you have istalled i your Avid editig system. You caot have the exteded desktop mode selected i the Widows Display Properties dialog box; you must select the cloe settig. (Macitosh) I the moitor you wat to use as a Cliet moitor, click System Prefereces > Display ad select a video resolutio of 800 x 600 or lower. That moitor becomes the Cliet moitor. Select a resolutio greater tha 800 x 600 ad the moitor becomes a exteded desktop. 14 Settig Up Your Software-Oly Avid Editig System Whe usig a Cliet moitor coected to the video display board, you ca drag the positio bar ad have the video i the Cliet moitor simultaeously repositio (called scrubbig) whe real-time effects are o (gree). If real-time effects are off (blue), you ca play ad stop the sequece, but draggig the positio bar does ot simultaeously repositio the video i the Cliet moitor. Coectig a Cliet Moitor over a 1394 Port To coect a Cliet moitor to a Widows or a Macitosh system: A Widows system is show as a example. 1. Coect the system as you did i Coectig a Computer Without a Cliet Moitor o page 11, but do t tur o the power. 2. Coect a Cliet moitor to a digital video deck, a digital camera, or a trascoder usig the ecessary aalog cable. Figure 7 shows a example of a digital video deck coected to a Cliet moitor. Whe you ru your Avid editig applicatio, you must tur off realtime effects to eable the output data to be set to the 1394 port. The output video ad audio are sychroized as cliet audio ad video, ad do ot match the video displayed o the computer moitor ad the audio set to the system speakers (see Audio ad Video Syc Issues o page 15). Audio ad Video Syc Issues With the Avid editig system set up as show i Figure 7, the video ad audio might appear to be out of syc i the followig situatios: You are capturig from a digital device. A Cliet moitor is attached. The system, however, is fuctioig ormally, as explaied below. Syc Issue: Whe capturig from a digital device (a digital camera, digital video deck, or trascoder), what you see o the system moitor ad hear from the system speakers is ot i syc with the icomig video ad audio comig from the digital device. Explaatio: The icomig video ad audio from the digital device must be buffered, ad the fed to the system moitor ad system speakers. Although it might look ad soud out of syc from the digital device output, the video ad audio are beig captured properly. For example, if you are markig IN ad OUT poits while previewig video, the poits are placed i the correct locatio for editig. 15

Explaatio: Your Avid system processes the video ad audio ad seds them to the system moitor ad system speakers. The system video ad audio are always i syc. However, your Avid system also provides the same video ad audio i 1394 format to a digital device (digital camera, digital video deck, or trascoder) coected by a 1394 cable (see Figure 8). Because the Cliet moitor is attached to the digital device, the delay betwee the time the video ad audio are processed iterally ad set to the digital device causes the video o the Cliet moitor to be out of syc with the audio from the system speakers. To hear sychroized audio while you use a Cliet moitor for video: t t Attach a separate pair of speakers to the same digital device you attached to the Cliet moitor. Tur off or discoect the system speakers. Cliet moitor video ad audio from exteral speakers are always i syc whe they are set to the digital device. 16

17 Coectig the Editig Equipmet Coectig a Cliet Moitor to a Aalog Port Whe you ru your Avid system, you must tur o real-time effects to eable the output data to be set to the Cliet moitor attached to the aalog port (see Coectig a Cliet Moitor o page 12). Aalog Coectio o a Widows System You ca coect a Cliet moitor directly to the secod video port of the display board o a Widows system. Aalog Coectio o a Macitosh System You ca coect a Cliet moitor directly to the aalog ports of the followig two supported Macitosh products (for updates o supported Macitosh products, see the Avid Kowledge Ceter): PowerBook G4 (Titaium) with rear S-Video output Power Macitosh G4 usig a digital-to-vga adapter o the digital output of the Apple display board You caot coect a Cliet moitor to the rear of a imac system. The VGA coectors at the rear oly mirror the imac system s built-i display. Aalog Coectio Requiremets The followig coditios must be met before a coected moitor ca receive data as a Cliet moitor: Real-time effects must be eabled. The cosole must have a resolutio of 800 x 600. You ca also coect a Cliet moitor to a digital video deck or a digital camera as explaied i Coectig a Cliet Moitor over a 1394 Port o page

18 Settig Up Your Software-Oly Avid Editig System Cotrollig a Aalog Video Deck (Widows) Your Avid software provides aalog video deck cotrol usig the serial port o your Widows system. The serial port coects to a remote serial cotrol coector, which is available o most aalog video decks. To cotrol the aalog video deck, you eed a optioal RS-232 to RS-422 serial cable or a adapter kit. Although a adapter kit must be purchased separately, the followig procedure explais how to coect a sample adapter kit betwee your Widows system ad a aalog video deck usig the followig: A RS-232 to RS-422 serial adapter Two serial cables with 9-pi male coectors at both eds To coect a sigle deck to your computer: 1. Purchase a adapter kit. 2. Attach oe ed of a 9-pi cable to the ed of the serial adapter labeled RS-232 (see Figure 9). Attach the other ed of the 9-pi cable to the serial port of the computer. 4. Attach oe ed of the other 9-pi cable to the ed of the serial adapter labeled RS Attach the other ed of the other 9-pi cable to the remote serial port of the aalog video deck. 18

19 Coectig the Editig Equipmet Cotrollig a Aalog Video Deck (Macitosh) If your supported Macitosh system has a USB port, you ca cotrol a aalog video deck. Your Avid software provides aalog video deck cotrol usig the USB-to-serial adapter (coected to the USB port o your Macitosh system) ad a RS-232 to RS-422 serial adapter kit. The RS- 422 serial port of the adapter kit coects to a remote serial cotrol coector, which is available o most aalog video decks. Although the USB-to-serial adapter kit ad the RS-232 to RS-422 serial adapter kit must be purchased separately, the followig procedure explais how to coect a sample adapter kit betwee your system ad a aalog video deck usig the followig: The USB-to-serial adapter kit (Avid supports oly the Keyspa Twi Serial Adapter, Keyspa part umber USA-28x). Support for this device ca chage at ay time. A RS-232 to RS-422 serial adapter kit Two serial cables with 9-pi male coectors at both eds To coect a sigle deck to your computer: 1. Purchase the Keyspa Twi Serial Adapter (USA-28x), a RS-232 to RS-422 serial adapter, ad two serial cables. 2. Plug the USB coector of the Keyspa Twi Serial Adapter ito a USB port o the Macitosh system (see your system documetatio for the USB port locatio). 3. Istall the Keyspa Twi Serial Adapter software usig the istructios located o the Keyspa Twi Serial Adapter CD-ROM. You might have to go to the Keyspa Web site ad dowload the software if you do t have the CD-ROM. 19

20 Settig Up Your Software-Oly Avid Editig System 4. Attach oe ed of the first 9-pi cable to the ed of the serial adapter labeled RS-232 (see Figure 10). Attach the other ed of the first 9-pi cable to serial port 1 of the Keyspa Twi Serial Adapter. 6. Attach oe ed of the secod 9-pi cable to the ed of the serial adapter labeled RS Attach the other ed of the secod 9-pi cable to the remote serial port of the aalog video deck. You eed to cofigure the aalog video deck i the Deck Cofiguratio settigs of your project. For more iformatio, see Cofigurig Decks i the Help. 20

21 Assigig a Driver to Your Digital Device (Widows Oly) Assigig a Driver to Your Digital Device (Widows Oly) Your Avid system uses the DirectShow driver provided by Microsoft Corporatio. You eed to assig the driver to your digital device. To assig the DirectShow driver to a digital device coected via a 1394 cable: 1. Use a 1394 cable to coect the digital device to the system. The Widows XP operatig system detects a ew device ad loads the DirectShow driver. A message box opes, askig what you wat to do with the device. 2. Select Take o actio. This does t attach the driver to ay specific applicatio, but allows ay applicatio to use it. Turig Off Your Equipmet (Widows) Whe you are fiished usig your system ad wat to tur it off completely, do the followig to avoid damagig your computer or media storage drives. Make sure to quit your Avid applicatio before turig off your equipmet. To tur off your equipmet: 1. Quit your Avid applicatio. 2. Select Start > Shut Dow. The Shut Dow Widows dialog box appears. 3. Select Shut dow from the pop-up meu, ad click OK. 4. Whe the system displays a message tellig you it is safe to tur off your computer, press the Power butto o the computer. 21

Never remove exteral media drives from your Avid system whe it is tured o. Shut dow the computer ad drives before you move drives. Turig Off Your Equipmet (Macitosh) Whe you are fiished usig your system ad wat to tur it off completely, do the followig to avoid damagig your computer or media storage drives. Make sure to quit your Avid applicatio before turig off your equipmet. c To tur off your equipmet: 1. Quit your Avid applicatio. 2. Choose Apple meu > Shut Dow. 3. Tur off your speakers ad moitors. 4. Tur off each exteral media drive. 5. Tur off all other hardware. Never remove exteral media drives from your Avid system whe it is tured o. Shut dow the computer ad drives before you move drives. 22
