1 ECONOMIC IMPACT OF THE MARINE INDUSTRIES WITHIN SOUTH EAST ENGLAND With a turnover of 10.8 billions in 2004, the marine companies in the South East represent more than 20% of the UK marine industry, and the SE is confirmed as the most important marine region in the UK. The regional industry is extending this position with a turnover growth of 27 % between 1995 and 2004, compared with 19% growth for the national industry. The largest sectors in the SE marine industry are Defence, Maritime Services and Leisure Marine, but other smaller sub-sectors are growing rapidly (eg marine telecommunications growing at more than 15% per annum). In terms of, the Defence and Leisure Marine sub-sectors are in the lead for valueadded in the SE region, each contributing more than 1B towards the region s. At the same time, however, employment has generally dropped significantly a trend seen throughout the UK manufacturing economy. Exceptionally, the number of employees has increased significantly in both the Leisure Marine and Maritime Services segments, whose workforces have increased by 50% and 100% respectively over the decade to This growth is supported by the success of companies in these sub-sectors within export markets. More than 60,000 employees directly worked in the SE marine industry (in 2004), with Leisure Marine, Defence, Shipping and Maritime Services accounting for approx 70% of this figure. Across the regional industry as a whole, this employment has been driven strongly up the value chain, especially over the past 5 years. Over this period, the average productivity (/employee) for SE marine companies has increased by an impressive 23%, compared with a productivity gain of around 15% for the whole UK economy over the same period.
