Course Description Students will build on the foundational knowledge of written & spoken French attained 1 st year. Students will identify cultural and social behaviors common to French-speaking countries. Course Materials Bon Voyage I (1 ST semester); Bon Voyage II (2nd semester) (2005 editions); available French.glencoe.com writing utensils and paper (for notes & classwork); binder for safekeeping of homework calendar, other handouts & notes; ziplock bag for flashcards etc. (Recommended not required) French-English dictionary Course Objectives By the end of 2 nd year French, you should be able to: Converse with French speakers about daily life, past events and what you were like as a child (including the topics below). Write in the target language around the course topics below. Course Topics (Students should prepare to take comprehensive semester and final exams.) UNITS REVIEW OF FRE , Comparisons (using adjectives) Weather & clothing New regular -ir ending verbs 5 irregular -ir ending verbs (MTV verbs) forms of quel and tout demonstrative adjectives ; regular -re ending verbs, mettre, croire/voir the verbs lire, dire, écrire Talking about team sports (soccer, basketball, volleyball, cycling, running) Describing past actions, Asking who/what questions passé composé of regular verbs Qui/qu est-ce que, quoi the irregular verbs boire, devoir and recevoir Describing summer and winter activities passé composé of irregular verbs negative statements (ne...plus, ne...jamais, ne...personne) passé composé with être passé composé être versus avoir 1 st semester topics
2 Discussing movies, plays, museums Talking about things/people you know Referring to people/things already mentioned The verbs «savoir», «connaître» (conjugations & differentiation) ; indirect & direct object pronouns talking aches & pains, body parts indirect object pronouns lui/leur, Dr. Office verbs (more irreg. ir verbs) ; pronominal verbs talking about habitual and continuous actions in the past refer to people and things already mentioned, tell what you and other do for one another the imparfait (forms and use) the imparfait vs. the passé composé, the verb venir, 2 nd semester topics (if time permits) Classroom Expectations treating others how you want to be treated. RESPECTFUL: Be respectful of me and your classmates; and you can expect the same treatment in return. But, also be empathetic of your classmates differences. Others might not appreciate something that you consider no big deal. RESPONSIBLE: Come prepared with all class materials, ready to actively participate (not simply occupying a desk). Own your actions. Much of work focuses on putting sentences/ideas together and practicing with classmates in pairs, small groups and in front of the class. This practice will help you and others advance in the language. You are responsible for your own learning and supporting each other in this effort. It takes courage, effort and practice to speak a foreign language. Be a positive force for learning in class (Be aware that some off-task actions might be distracting to others.) Classroom Policies: Tardy: If you are late or not in your seat when the bell rings, do so quietly and don t forget to sign the tardy log. NOTE: if you are over five minutes late, EHS considers you absent. Absent: when absent, ask about missing assignments or quizzes before or after school not during or between classes. Be prompt in requesting and submitting this missing work in accordance with the student handbook. Realize you are responsible for all the material covered in class at all times. You need to take the initiative and schedule time before or after school to make up missed quizzes or tests. Academic Honesty: Do your own work. Copying the work (homework or assessment) of another or allowing them to copy your work, cheating, is not acceptable and will result in a failing grade for that learning activity. Using an online translator for projects is considered cheating. When I assign projects, I want to see what you know not someone else s translation of what you want to express. Using an online translator for dialogues or other projects will result in a zero for the assignment. Hall pass: you will be assigned six restroom passes per semester. Be mindful of appropriate times to request to use the restroom (not during paired activities). Any unused passes may be redeemed for goodies at the end of the semester. Wait to sharpen your pencil rather than interrupting the teacher during instruction Turn off and/or put away technology & work from other classes. These items will be confiscated if they re out during class. Only water can be consumed in the classroom (no other food or drink please).
3 My students almost always comply with classroom policies, but I will apply progressive discipline if needed. An incident results when a student s behavior interferes with the learning process. 1. Parents, please note: the homework grade is input at the end of each month only (when I collect the homework calendar). In order to get a more accurate picture of homework completion, please ask to see the student s homework calendar and/or planner. A A- B+ B B- Grades and percentages % C % 90-92% C 73-76% 87-89% C % 83-86% D 60-69% 80-82% F Below 60% Your grade in French will be weighted accordingly: Tests/quizzes: Homework: Culture credits: Performance/classwork (includes entry/exit tasks): 55% 20% 5% 20% Tests/quizzes (55%): If you are missing a quiz score due to an absence or would like to retake a quiz, you must do so before the chapter test is administered. There are no retakes on tests. You may retake only 3 quizzes per semester. So study for your quizzes and tests and be ready on test day. Homework (20%): Each night students will need to review vocabulary, grammar, and notes for 15 minutes in addition to completing written homework assignments (almost daily). Written work: Record and track written assignments on your monthly teacher-provided calendar to turn in at the end of each month for points. As you enter class, have your completed written work and homework calendar out and ready to be stamped for credit. You will not get credit for incomplete work. If an assignment is one day late, you will receive only ½ credit. Beyond that, you will get no credit for the assignment. Don t lose your calendar of stamps; it reflects all the assignments you completed that I will collect and input at the end of each month. If you are having problems with an assignment, please see me for help prior to the due date. In case of an absence, see the section titled Absence/Make-up Policy below. Culture Credit (5%): This is ongoing independent work designed to encourage students to actively seek out news from francophone countries and to experience the ways in which French culture is present within our own country. Culture Credits must be turned in on or before the published due dates NO POINTS IF RECEIVED LATER. The aim of this is to help students learn to balance requirements and not wait until the last minute to complete something.
4 Performance (and class participation) 20%: This category represents all paired and group activities, presentations as well as the entry and exit tasks. What does this look like? Raise your hand quietly to show me you re willing to try. Give full eye-contact to whoever is speaking. Listen to others. You will often need to repeat what others have said. Sing along; play along; and participate in all paired and group language activities. Speak as much French as possible. Remember speaking with errors is better than not speaking at all. Please note: The performance/class participation category is tied to attendance. If you re late or not present, you cannot earn missed in-class performance points. Absence/Make-up Policy School rules regarding tardies, absences and excessive absences will be enforced. Please refer to the student handbook. It is the responsibility of the student to ask for and to complete any missed work due to being absent. This (make-up work) is to be done outside of class. If, for example, you are absent three (3) days, you then have three (3) days to turn in your make-up work, etc. Please come before or after school for make-up work, not during or between classes. Contact Information Best times to call: 7-7:25 am M-F; 2-2:30 pm M-Thurs and non-lif days. On Wednesdays, there is support time between 2-3:00 after school. If you need help, take action early. Don t wait for things to improve on their own; they almost never will. If you know you re going to be absent, please let me know ahead of time by , voice mail or in person before or after school.
