1 WOOD OUTSWING BI-FOLD DOOR INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS Please read these instructions in their entirety prior to beginning the installation process. Sierra Pacific Windows is not responsible for site measurements or the structural requirements for the installation of the Bi-fold door system. The weight of the door is carried by the header; therefore it is imperative that the head jamb be securely anchored to the header. We recommend the Sierra Pacific Bi-fold door system be installed with a minimum of two people; one person handling the door panels and the other person attaching and adjusting hardware. CAUTION: Panels can be extremely heavy and awkward to handle. We also recommend that all components be finished prior to installation. Otherwise special care is needed in labeling components during the un-assembling process, to ensure the re-assembling process is done correctly. All hardware holes have been pre-drilled. Do not drill any holes during assembly. 2 Assembling The Frame Refer to your SPW Bi-fold door drawing to determine your specific door set-up and hardware placement. Load head track: Top Pivot - Left or Right Carrier sets - Intermediate Carrier set (see Figure 1). 3 Sill No pre-assembly preparation required. Side Jambs No pre-assembly preparation required. Assembling the Frame (Continued) Head 1. Apply SM-8500 acrylic sealant (supplied by SPW). 2. Apply a 1/4" bead of sealant as shown. 3. Use fasteners (labeled #1 & #3) to fasten the head jamb to the side jamb (see Figure 2). Figure 2 Sill 1. Use fasteners (labeled #2). Apply the double stick sill gasket to each end of sill. When fastening frame to sill, make sure you have solid compression of the gasket. 2. After sill is fastened to the jamb apply SM 7108 sealant (provided by SPW) to the (sill to jamb) joint at the underside of sill. 3. After sealant is applied, wrap Vycor around bottom corner of sill (at least 4" up jamb & 4" across bottom of sill) (see Figure 3). 4 Exterior Stops 1. SPW recommends applying exterior stops before frame is installed into wall opening. This allows fasteners to be applied from the outside of the frame into the stop in order to hide fastener holes. Fasteners should be placed approximately 3 from the ends and apart. The interior face of the stop should align with the interior face of the sill stop, so frame weather-strip is on the same plane and will compress equally (see Figure 4). 5 Installing the Frame (Continued) (Please read Frame & Flashing instructions carefully and thoroughly before installing frame.) Weather Barrier Head Flashing Figure 6 1. It is the responsibility of the installer / contractor to verify compatibility of sealants, flashing and all envelope membrane drainage system components. 2. Check rough opening to insure that opening is level, plumb and square. Verify that width and height dimensions are correct. Rough opening should be 3/4 wider than overall frame height and width. Sill plate or concrete slab should be flat and level. Make sure opening, specifically the sub floor (or concrete), is dry, clean and free of dirt and debris. Wood Inswing Bi Fold Door Frame Jamb Flashing Sill Pan NOTE: Flashing and/or an appropriate method of sealing shall be designed as a part of an overall weather resistive barrier system. It is not the responsibility of the door manufacturer to design or recommend a flashing system appropriate for each job condition. Any variance from this installation procedure signifies that proper waterproofing becomes the responsibility of the design professional and/or the installer. 3. Sill Pan. Sierra Pacific strongly recommends the use of a sill pan under the standard sill. If a metal sill pan is used, it is the responsibility of the installer / contractor to verify compatibility of metals to eliminate the possibility of galvanic reaction. A rigid or flexible membrane pan may be used depending upon project specifications and installation conditions. Installation should be compliant with ASTM E 2112 Standard Practice for Installation of Exterior Windows, Doors and Skylights. Figures 7 & 8 illustrate installation using a rigid sill pan. Does not apply to ADA or U Channel sills. 4. For an overview of the proper flashing sequence (see Figure 6). 5. Dry fit frame to rough opening. After correct fit is comfirmed apply two continuous beads of polyurethane (2100) sealant across the width of the sill, approximately 1/2-1 inch in from the interior and exterior edges of the RO. The sealant should extend 6 inches up each side of frame members. Set the sill pan in place and make sure that it is fully seated in the sealant (see Figure 7). 6 6. Once in place, apply a bead of sealant just above the back corner of the sill pan. The sealant should be continuous and extend across the entire length of the sill pan. A discontinuous bead of sealant should then be applied near the exterior edge of the sill pan (see Figure 7). It is recommended that the door frame be set onto 1/8 plastic shims set in the sill pan (see Figure 8). This will allow any water caught by the pan to drain out. Shims should be spaced 1-2 from each end, then approximately every 12 thereafter. Figure 10 1/8 plastic shims Figure 8 8. With the frame set into the rough opening, check to make sure it is centered. Tack the door in place by using a 2 min., corrosion resistant screw through the brickmould at one upper corner. Make sure that the sill is straight, flat and level. Use a tape measure to measure the horizontal and diagonal dimensions of the frame to ensure the frame is plumb and square (see Figure 10). These measurements should be double-checked by using a framing square and level or straight edge to ensure the jambs are straight. Shim at the side jambs as required. Figure If the unit includes brickmould, apply polyurethane sealant to the backside of the brickmould as shown in figure 9. Sealant should run the full length of the brickmould. After sealant is applied insert and center the frame in the rough opening. When doing so, tilt the frame back so that the sill can be set into the opening and onto the sealant. 7 NOTE: We recommend that the head be installed with a slight upward bow (approximatly 1/8") at the center of door rough opening. 9. Once the frame is square, level and plumb, finish securing the jambs. Place fasteners apart. Place a small amount of polyurethane sealant over each fastener head " screws (fasteners labeled #4) to be used in the head (fill every pre-drilled hole). Figure 12 Sealant over fasteners Page 7

8 11. With the unit completely secured to the structure, apply a bead of polyurethane sealant at the edge of the head jamb brickmould where it meets the sheathing. Also, apply similar beads of sealant between the edge of the side jamb brickmould and the sheathing material. Tool the sealant into the joint to ensure the joint is filled. If the unit does not have brickmould, place backer rod and polyurethane sealant between the head and side jambs and the rough opening (see Figure 13). 12. 9 After The Frame Has Been Installed 1. Refer to your SPW Bi-fold drawing to determine your specific door set-up. 2. Install Wall pivot assembly (required only if Bi-fold is taller than 88"). 3. Cylinder and screw holes are pre-drilled by SPW (see Figure 11). 4. You will be required to pre-drill trimmer prior to installing wall pivot (See Figure 11a). 5. 10 Door Panel Preparation 1. Panels are numbered at the top of each panel as shown below. Lay out in numerical order always from left to right (see Figure 12). Figure 12 VIEWED FROM EXTERIOR 2. Install hinges (hinge screw holes are pre-drilled). Use fasteners (labeled #2) to attach hinges to panels. Refer to the legend on the SPW Bi-fold drawing of your door for proper hinge type placement. 11 Door Panel Preparation (Continued) 1. Install mohair weather-strip on bottom of panels. Slide weather strip in from end of aluminum track. 2. Crimp the ends of the aluminum track once weather strip is in place (see Figure 14). 3. Install flush bolts at the top and bottom of the interior face of the panels to which they apply (see Figure 15). Figure 14 Installing the Panels 1. Always start at the jamb and work towards the center. This may require working inward from both ends. Begin panel installation at the bottom pivot block located at the sill. 2. Place the 5/16" shim (supplied by SPW) on top of protected sill, allowing the panel to rest on shim. This helps pre-set the correct height of panel and hinge screw alignment (see Figure 16). ADA or U Channel sills similar. 3. Insert hinge screws through hinge and into predrilled holes in panel. 12 After All Panels Are Installed 1. Open and close very slowly for the first time! Do not force anything. Make vertical and horizontal adjustments until the panels operate smoothly w/o interference (see Figure 20 & 20a). 2. Install the weather-stripping for the individual door panels (see Figure 17). 3. Weather-strip should fill the space between each hinge & be cut flush with the top and bottom of the panels. 4. After door panel has been stained or painted, apply hinge gaskets around one leaf of each hinge (see Figure 18). Adjust the Door Panels 1. 3/16" gap between top of the doors, and the top track. 2. 3/8" gap between bottom of the doors and the bottom track (not including protective sill covering). 13 4. Horizontal adjustment is achieved by using a 10" 12" Philips head screwdriver at top and bottom pivots. 5. Vertical adjustment is achieved by using a 10"-12" standard head screwdriver at the top pivots and carriers (See Figure 20 & 20a) 6. After final adjustments remove adjustment clips (save for later adjustments). 7. Install flush bolt plates in head (E-3) Figure 20 Top Horizontal Adjustment Exterior Stops (continued) If exterior stop where not applied to frame before frame was install into rough opening, continue with steps 1-6 of this section. 1. Install exterior head stop first (stops are shipped rough cut and must be trimmed to fit). 2. Place wood blocking against head track. Position exterior head stop 5/16" out from the exterior face of the panel (See Figure 21). 3. Install weather-strip into head stop kerf (see Figure 21a). 4. Place side jamb exterior stop flush with head jamb stop (See Fig.22) 5. Install strike plate as required. 6. Install door hardware as required. 14 Astragal (Not all doors will require an astragal) 1. As required, the underside edge of the astragal should be placed flush with the edge of the panel (see Figure 23). 2. The top of the astragal should be approximately 1/8" below the head stop. The bottom of the astragal should be approximately 1/8" above the sill (see Figure 24). The bottom of the astragal on units with ADA or U-Channel sills should be flush with the bottom of the panel. 3. Use fasteners labeled #5 to attach the astragal to the panel.
