Rite of Christian Initiation for Children The Association for Catechumenal Ministry LESSON #6 The Sacraments of Healing Objective: The students will learn that the Catholic Church has Seven Sacraments instituted by Christ while he was living on earth among us. The next two we will discuss are called the Sacraments of Healing, both of body and of spirit. Open with a Prayer: Our Father, Hail Mary. Review with the students the first four lines of the Apostle Creed and continue with the fifth line. Teach: Today we are going to learn about the next two sacraments of the Catholic Church, called the Sacraments of Healing (write words on board). Remember, the first three sacraments we talked about last week are called the Sacraments of Initiation (write words on board), because each of these sacraments welcome us more fully into the life of the Catholic Church. 1. Can anyone name one of these Sacraments of Initiation? (Baptism, Confirmation, First Holy Eucharist) 2. Do you remember how we said every sacrament has both a sign something we can see and an effect or inner grace something we can t see? What is the sign and the effect or grace of Baptism? Of Confirmation? Of Holy Eucharist? (Baptism sign = water and anointing with oil, the grace or effect = washing away of sin, member of God s family, members with Christ, part of Catholic Church and its mission; Confirmation sign = anointing with oil, the grace or effect = increased power of the Holy Spirit; Holy Eucharist sign = bread and wine, the grace or effect = by receiving the living Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Christ, we are uniting ourselves with God by consuming the Eucharist) Remember when we talked about how God continued to call his people back to him, even when his people turned away from him and chose to act in ways that were displeasing to God? 1. Remember Adam and Eve? How did God let them know that he still loved them? (although he sent them out of Eden, he promised that one day he would send a savior to bring them back to him) 2. How about Noah? (placed rainbow in the sky as a promise he would never again destroy the whole world in a flood, instead he would show his people how to repent and return to him) - 1 -
3. How did God let Abraham know he was loved? (promised that if Abraham and his descendants trusted God and had faith in him, he would give them land of their own where they could be safe forever) 4. And Moses? (gave him and the tribes of Israel the Ten Commandments to help them follow God s ways) 5. And, finally, David? (promised a descendant of David would be the savior for the Children of Israel if the Kingdom of Israel would follow God s laws) In each one of these situations, God reached out to the Children of Israel over and over again to bring them back to him. But the people of Israel kept getting into trouble and forgetting to follow God s ways; so finally, who did God finally send to us to help bring us back to him? (Jesus) When Jesus came, he showed us and taught us how to live in the Kingdom of God here on earth, as well as how to live within God s ways so we can live in heaven with God some day. God is always thinking of us, no matter what we are doing or even whether or not we are thinking of him! When we are happy and healthy, or if we are sad or sick. No matter what, God wants us to be close to him. In order to help us stay close to God, we have two more sacraments which were given to us by Jesus to help us when we are sad or sick. These next two sacraments are called the Sacraments of Healing: the Sacrament of Penance, when we are sad because we have done some things we know are wrong, and the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, when we are feeling sick. THE RITE OF THE SACRAMENT OF ANOINTING OF THE SICK: Traditionally referred to as Extreme Unction or Last Rites, the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick was previously most commonly administered to the dying, for the remission of sins and the provision of spiritual strength and health. Recently, however, its use has been expanded to all who are gravely ill or are about to undergo a serious operation, and the Church stresses a secondary effect of the sacrament: to help a person recover his health. Like Confession and Holy Communion, to which it is closely linked, the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick can be repeated as often as is necessary. When Christ sent His disciples out to preach, "they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them" (Mark 6:13). James 5:14-15 ties physical healing to the forgiveness of sins: Is any man sick among you? Let him bring in the priests of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith shall save the sick man: and the Lord shall raise him up: and if he be in sins, they shall be forgiven him. The essential rite of the sacrament consists in the priest laying hands on the sick, anointing him with blessed oil, which is the sign, and praying "Through this holy anointing may the Lord - 2 -
in his love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit. May the Lord who frees you from sin save you and raise you up." When circumstances permit, the Church recommends that the sacrament take place during Mass, or at least that it be preceded by Confession and followed by Holy Communion. Only priests (including bishops) can administer the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, since, when the sacrament was instituted during Christ's sending out of His disciples, it was confined to the men who would become the original bishops of the Church. Received in faith and in a state of grace, the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick provides the recipient with a number of effects or graces, including the fortitude to resist temptation in the face of death, when he is weakest; a union with the Passion of Christ, which makes his suffering holy; and the grace to prepare for death, so that he may meet God in hope rather than in fear. If the recipient was not able to receive the Sacrament of Confession, Anointing also provides forgiveness of sins. And, if it will aid in the salvation of his soul, Anointing may restore the recipient's health. THE RITE OF THE SACRAMENT OF PENANCE: Read: Grade 5 Text Book: Credo: I Believe, chapter 28, pages TEACHER S NOTE: This is a great chapter which will help prepare your students to receive their First Penance. Sign = the priest s words of Absolution; Effect = forgiveness of sins Teach: The Ten Commandments can often be used as a way to reflect on your day, to make sure you haven t made an error in the way you ve behaved during the day. They can also be used before the Sacrament of Penance to help you remember those behaviors you need to confess to Father. Let s spend a few minutes at the end of this class, walking through our day, reflecting on any of the things we might have done which were unkind, thoughtless, or hurtful to others and to God. HAND OUT THE EXAMINATION OF CONSCIENCE BOOKLETS based on the Ten Commandments. Please ask students to read along while you read through each of the Ten Commandments. They may write notes in their booklets to bring to their First Penance. Pay special attention to the instructions for receiving the Sacrament of Penance at the back of the book. Also, HAND OUT THE PRAYER CARDS WITH THE ACT OF CONTRITION printed on the back. Tell them they may also bring that to their First Penance as well as to all additional opportunities for Penance until they have memorized it. Conclude with a Hail Mary, the Lord s Prayer, and the first five lines of the Apostle s Creed
An Examination of Conscience 1. First Commandment - I am the Lord your God; You shall have no other gods before me Do you make unreasonable demands on your parents for clothes or money? Do you skip church in order to watch a favorite TV show or attend a sports event instead? 2. Second Commandment Do not use the name of the Lord in vain. Do you use language that you would never speak in front of your grandmother? Is your language a reflection of a low opinion of others and insults? 3. Third Commandment - Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy Do you skip Mass because few of your friends go to church or because you feel that the gift of God s presence should be as entertaining as MTV? 4. Fourth Commandment - Honor your father and your mother Do you thank your parents for what they do for you? Do you offer to help around the house? Do you value your family members as much as you do your friends? 5. Fifth Commandment - You shall not kill Do you value your life and that of others? Do you respect all people, even those who are different from you, or are handicapped or aged? 6. Sixth Commandment Do not commit adultery Do you use other people for your own selfish pleasure? Do you lie to get others to act against their values? 7. Seventh Commandment Do not steal Do you cheat on tests or homework? Do you ever shoplift or take things that don't belong to you? - 4 -
8. Eighth Commandment Do not bear false witness Do you gossip or pass on rumors that hurt other people? Can you be trusted to keep a confidence? Do you lie to protect your own ego, even if someone will be hurt? 9. Ninth Commandment Do not envy your neighbor s wife Are you envious of others? Do you resent their popularity or success? Do you treat members of the opposite gender with respect? Have you ever done something to harm the relationship between two people? 10. Tenth Commandment Do not envy your neighbor s goods Are you jealous if your friends have more than you do? Do you complain to your parents that you want to have the same stuff that others of your friends have? Do you get jealous if one of your siblings wins a competition or receives something that you don t have? - 5 -
THE APOSTLES CREED The Apostles Creed is the Church s statement of beliefs. If you read the creed carefully, you can see that what it is really saying is that we believe in God, in His son Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Spirit. It also says we believe in the holy Catholic Church, in the community of all saints, in the forgiveness of sins, and in eternal life with God in heaven. Most theologians agree that the creed was created within the first 100 to 200 years after Jesus death and resurrection. Over the years, the words have changed but only very slightly. Every Sunday at Mass, the entire congregation recites another version of the creed called The Nicene Creed. It is a little longer, but it is the same set of beliefs. I believe in God, The Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, Our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, Born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into Hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, And is seated at the right hand of God, The Father Almighty. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, The holy Catholic Church, The communion of saints, The forgiveness of sins, The resurrection of the body, And life everlasting. Amen
