PAEDIATRIC EMERGENCY FIRST AID Preventing accidents is always best, but accidents do happen so everyone who works with children and young people needs to know how to give first aid in an emergency. In this section you will show that you know how to make sure that you and others are safe from any further danger by doing a scene survey. You will show how to decide on priorities for treatment by doing a primary survey, how to keep an injured child safe while you call for help and how to carry out CPR using manikins. If you already hold a recognised and current paediatric first aid certificate there is no need to complete this section: your certificate will count as evidence of your recognised prior learning. The practical tasks for paediatric emergency first aid may be assessed in a location other than your workplace as you may join in a group with other candidates (your assessor will tell you if this is the case). Your assessor will set up mock accidents using manikins for you to show your skill in assessing situations. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING The following activities will help you to demonstrate your knowledge of emergency first aid for babies and children. You will be able to show how to treat minor injuries in a safe effective way as well as how to look after a child who is unconscious and not breathing. Shock is a lack of oxygen to the body s vital organs such as the heart and brain. It can be caused by severe blood loss. Shock can lead to life-threatening anaphylactic shock if not treated. 2. EVIDENCE GATHERING In this activity you will shadow and support a qualified, experienced paediatric first aider in your setting for about four weeks. When you both feel you are ready, you can carry out minor first aid treatment with supervision and guidance from the first aider. This will help you to capture evidence of how you work as a paediatric first aider. Your assessor will help you to identify suitable items of evidence. 135
6 You need to gather evidence of tasks you have carried out in your work to demonstrate your competence in giving first aid for minor cuts and grazes to children in your setting. Your assessor will also ask you questions about first aid for severe bleeding. Suggested evidence may include: diary entries of your work with the paediatric first aider signed witness statements to show you are able to carry out first aid treatment of minor cuts and grazes to children in your work setting. Putting it into practice This is a practical unit and you will show your skills in pretend exercises; you do not need to show your first aid skill in a real-life situation. Your assessor will set up mock accidents using manikins for you to show your skill in assessing danger, in dealing with an unconscious infant and child and in carrying out resuscitation. These exercises will enable the assessor to examine your competence by observing you carrying out first aid procedures. This may include asking related questions to test your underpinning knowledge. CYPW Unit 6: 2.2, 2.3, 3.1, 5.1, 5.2, 5.3 CCLD Unit 2: 2.2, 2.3, 3.1, 5.1, 5.2, 5.3 The primary survey Take part in a simulated emergency first aid exercise using infant and child manikins to show your competence in: a primary survey to assess an infant or child s response, airway and breathing recognising a mild or severe airway obstruction demonstrating how to treat an infant and a child who is choking following correct procedures for dealing with an infant and a child who is still choking identifying when to call for help placing an infant and a child in the appropriate recovery position. 136

CYPW Unit 2: 6.1, 6.2 Unit 6: 2.3, 3.2,.3, 6.3, 7.1 CCLD Unit 23: 6.1, 6.2 Unit 2: 2.3, 3.2,.3, 6.3, 7.1 PROFESSIONAL DISCUSSION Your assessor will conduct a professional discussion with you, which will capture evidence of your knowledge and understanding of topic areas. Below are some topic areas you will need to consider when preparing for the professional discussion with your assessor. The scene survey to identify and minimise any risks to yourself and others. The primary survey to check response, airway, breathing and circulation. The recovery position. CPR including giving rescue breaths and chest compressions. Your assessor will plan the content of your professional discussion and will advise you to help you to prepare beforehand. The professional discussion may cover more than this section of your Assessment Workbook. Discussion process The discussion process is part of the scene survey and simulated emergency first aid exercises linked to relevant practical skills. It will offer you the opportunity to show your knowledge and understanding of your responsibilities as a paediatric first aider. To prepare for your professional discussion, you should think about the following: When you would call for help in an emergency. What you would do in an incident involving electricity. How you would treat a child who is having a seizure. How you would treat minor and major external bleeding. How you would treat a child who is suffering from shock. What vital signs you need to monitor to be sure a child is safe while you wait for an ambulance. 137
