nd Life International: nd Life International is a collaboration with several funders and non-profit organizations that has been designed to be a path to living-wage jobs and life-changing wealth building for residents of Pittsburgh s Hill District. The purpose of the project is to develop an innovative employee-owned enterprise. Immigrants and unemployed Hill District residents will be recruited and trained to form an employee-owned enterprise that will specialize in collection, refurbishing and creative restoration of used electronics, appliances and furniture for reuse in its original form. These products will be marketed locally, nationally and internationally. This project is participating in the Pittsburgh Wealth Building Initiative (PWBI). The PWBI is a collaboration led by Duquesne University between Pittsburgh s for-profit, not-for-profit, and community economic development organizations committed to developing and supporting small and minority owned businesses in the region. Patterned after successful models in Cleveland and Mondragon, Spain, the PWBI will not only develop small and minority owned businesses to meet identified needs and markets but will also provide economic support for some of this region s most underserved inner-city neighborhoods creating wealth for residents of those neighborhoods through employee ownership within the businesses that are established. International Marketplace: This community program of CEED in collaboration with the Pittsburgh Public Market is designed to enable internationals living in the region to showcase, sell and build a customer base for their unique products, including authentic art, crafts, fabrics, food, spices and herbs, books and music. This program provides the opportunity for entrepreneurs to build a client base before graduating and starting a business. Currently the International Market is housed at the Pittsburgh Public Market, 011 Smallman Street & 17 th Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15. CEED along with its partners will grow this program at the Miller School building as follow: Year 1: Year : Year 4: ½ Training Center and Incubator Space: CEED provide series of entrepreneurship and small business trainings to underserved and disadvantaged entrepreneurs and small business owners. A total of 489 underserved and disadvantaged entrepreneurs/small business owners have participated in CEED
training sessions. Classrooms at the miller school property will be used as training rooms. CEED currently serves 00 plus small business clients, many of which are in need of incubator space that the Small Business Village will offer. International Fashion House: This program promotes the entrepreneurial skills of a cooperative of underserved and disadvantaged sewers to use quality and authentic world fabrics for custom-made stylish and wearable apparel, fashion accessories, bedding, tablecloths, napkins, curtains, uniforms and medical scrubs that meet local, national and international demand. Training programs are also offered. The International Fashion House is currently housed at 4705 Liberty Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 154. CEED along with its partners will grow this program at the Miller School building as follow: Year 1: Year : Year 4: ½ Microenterprise/Small Business Assistance and Microloan: This pragmatic, grassroots, one-on- one approach helps both startup and existing underserved and disadvantaged entrepreneurs to develop, stabilize and grow successful businesses in Southwestern Pennsylvania. CEED s technical assistance includes (1) Business review and business plan development to meet modern day economic realities, () Training and counseling on marketing, distribution, customer service, business operations and sustainability strategies, (3) Market analysis and exploring new market opportunities, (4) Taking advantage of current business technology, including e-commerce, social media, software and websites, (5) Ongoing mentoring, case management and capacity building, including bookkeeping, accounting, legal issues and compliance, management, certification, taxes, financing and debt management. Currently, CEED has two full-time Program Officers and a pool of consultants that assist 100 active clients. An additional 100 clients are served on a less frequent basis. Due to increasing number of clients in need of this service, over the next five years, CEED will add additional technical assistance program officers and consultants.
Year 1: Active Client Caseload 100 Program Officers Administrative Staff Professional Consultants 1 As Needed Year : Active Client Caseload 150 Program Officers 3 Active Client Caseload 150 Program Officers 3 Year 4: Active Client Caseload 00 Program Officers 4 Active Client Caseload 00 Program Officers 4 CEED s microloan program provides low-interest flexible financing within the range of $100-$10,000 to new and existing underserved and disadvantaged businesses. CEED most recent strategic plan calls for increase in capacity and number of loans from 0 to 60 plus loans over the next five years. The pool to fund microloans for will be $98,755. This amount will be increased to $,788,699 by 017. These funds will be obtained from the U.S. Small Business Administration Intermediary Lender Program and local foundations. Year 1: Number of Loans 0 Program Officer Committee Members 1 (Part-time) 3 Year : Number of Loans 35 Program Officers Number of Loans 45 Program Officers
Year 4: Number of Loans 57 Program Officers Number of Loans 67 Program Officers Immigrant Childcare Project: This project is an example of CEED s innovative thinking and ability to be culturally competent and take advantage of business development opportunities. This initiative was originally established by the Allegheny County Department of Human Services Immigrants and International initiative in the spring of 01. It was in response to the need raised by its advisory council for culturally sensitive childcare. The project is designed to enhance community growth and economic self-sufficiency by developing business opportunities for immigrant and refugee women. The specific program goal is to develop a source of employment and income by training immigrant and refugee women to become relative/neighbor and family childcare providers, building on the experience of many of these women. CEED has formed partnerships with local agencies on this initiative, and several sources of funding have been identified. The first batch of 13 immigrant and refugee women successfully completed the program in March 013, and many have already started their home-based childcare businesses. Miller school will also provide space to a qualified child care business that can support individuals and families working in the incubator. CEED Offices: CEED also plan to relocate from its current,00 sq.ft. administrative Office space located at 6435 Frankstown Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 1506 to 154 Miller Street, Pittsburgh, PA Ujamaa Collective Offices: One of the Program Initiatives identified in the Hill District Master Plan is the creation of a Hill District Business Incubator to encourage and support local businesses, nonprofits, arts, and a cooperative marketplace, with the goal of establishing a sustainable, lively economy in the Hill. In partnership with CEED, Ujamaa Collective will relocate its existing Marketplace, its offices and use the business incubator space for it women-owned business members. The business incubator will be a combination of short and long term rental for vendors/small businesses, a shared commercial kitchen for food related preparation, a kitchen
laboratory for manufacture of skin and hair care products and an accompanying multi-use studio/arts production space. This site will also allow Ujamaa to incubate additional types of small businesses in the space as well, such as a small international textile distribution warehouse and related import activities. Sincerely, RufusIdris Rufus Idris Executive Director
