4 BIM implementation - Objectives Object oriented 3D models should be used throughout the design, tendering and construction of the project Better design documents should be produced Coordination models containing all disciplines should lead to: Better quality review and therefore less errors Lower project cost estimates through more accurate bill-of-quantities Fewer change orders during construction due to errors in design The models should be perceived as more convenient and efficient for communicating the technical solutions during meetings than drawings 4

12 Conclusion used with permission from BSI The industry and our systems are not ready for fully connected and integrated BIM-models where objects (3D), time (4D), cost (5D) and asset management and maintenance information is found in ONE database. But let s develop the workflows and become masters of the object oriented models and the processes associated with them. Let s make sure we put in and leave the relevant information for the next stages so the models can continue their journey through the asset s lifecycle. The industry will know how to harvest the benefits when time comes. This will not happen overnight, but only if we take on the challenge we will speed this up.
