3 Cross Exploration Lesson 12: November 18, 2012 David and Goliath 1 Samuel 17 Characters: Narrator, Saul, Soldier 1, Soldier 2, Servant, David, Goliath. If possible, cast Goliath as a tall man and David as a short youth. Costumes: Dress each character according to his position. The Narrator wears modern attire; Saul wears a rich gown and sits on a golden throne. David, the servant, and the soldiers are dressed in simple tunics with belts. David has a slingshot tucked in his belt, and the soldiers carry swords. Goliath wears a tunic with armor on top plus helmet, breastplate, and shield. These items can be purchased through a costume supply store or made at home with cardboard, tin foil, and string. The same armor might be used later when Saul tries to place his armor on David. See examples in the Costumes and Props Folder on the CD. Props: Armor (sword, breastplate, leg irons, shield, helmet), throne (a folding chair spray-painted gold or covered with fabric works well), slingshot, five stones, stepladder. Prepare: Give scripts to actors ahead of time so they can prepare. Memorization is optional. Set stepladder at center stage for Goliath to stand on when he speaks to the Israelites. Place five stones around the staging area. NARRATOR: (Stands) King Saul did all right for a time. He won battles, and his people loved him. But as he grew older, Saul refused to trust in the Lord. He trusted in his own strength and turned away from God s blessings. But when Goliath arrived, Saul had a problem. He and his men were scared of Goliath. Let s find out why. GOLIATH: (ENTERS, stands center stage on ladder) Who is brave enough to fight me? You say you ve come to fight, but you are all little men, all little cowards. I am a Philistine, and you are Saul s men. Choose a man from your company, and I will fight him. If he wins, we will become your servants. But if I win, you will become our slaves. (Looks around for a volunteer) Just as I thought: no one is brave enough to fight me; there is not a real man among you. Well, at least you are wise. Anyone who fights me will die! Page1

4 (Laughs evilly and EXITS) NARRATOR: Yes, Goliath was intimidating. Did you notice how tall he was? Nine feet! He was a giant! Even Saul couldn t compare in height. Not only was Goliath tall, but he was also well protected. He wore a bronze helmet on his head, and a breastplate protected his chest. He had armor on his legs and a bronze javelin on his back. He also had someone carry a shield in front of him to protect him in battle. The Israelites were sure they couldn t defeat Goliath. Goliath didn t have any weaknesses. Then David, a shepherd, arrived. (DAVID and TWO SOLDIERS ENTER and cross to center stage.) SOLDIER 1: Did you hear what Goliath said? He s been looking for a challenger for forty days, but no one wants to fight the giant. He d rip a man to pieces. SOLDIER 2: The king promises a great reward to the man who kills Goliath, but so far, no one has stepped forward. DAVID: Why hasn t anyone done so? He s just a Philistine. We are the army of the living God. Whom should we fear? No one! (SOLDIERS and DAVID EXIT.) NARRATOR: People were surprised that a young boy would speak so bravely about fighting the giant Goliath. Soon, word traveled to King Saul, and Saul sent for David. SAUL ENTERS with his SERVANT, who carries the throne. The SERVANT places the throne center stage. SAUL sits and motions for the SERVANT to find DAVID. SERVANT EXITS and REENTERS with DAVID. DAVID stands near throne. SERVANT stands nearby. SAUL: What is this I hear about you? Is it true that you will fight Goliath? DAVID: It is true. I will fight him. I have been a shepherd for my father. When a lion or a bear took a lamb from the flock, I went after him and struck him, rescuing the lamb from his jaws. And if the lion or bear attacked me, I killed it. The Lord delivered me from the lion and the bear! He will surely deliver me from the Philistine Goliath. SAUL: You shall fight him then, but before you go, please wear my armor to protect you. SOLDIER 1 ENTERS with armor. SAUL dresses DAVID, but armor is obviously too big. DAVID: I cannot move well in this. Thank you, but I think I ll be better off without these. (Removes armor, hands it back to SAUL) SAUL: The Lord be with you. (SAUL, SOLDIER, and SERVANT EXIT, taking throne and armor. DAVID walks around and finds five stones.) Lesson 12, Page 2

5 NARRATOR: David went out to meet Goliath. He took his slingshot with him, and he found five smooth stones before he met the giant. GOLIATH ENTERS and climbs the ladder. GOLIATH: (Surprised and angry) Am I a dog that you come to me with sticks? Who do you think you are, boy? I am a warrior. You are nothing. I ll feed your flesh to the birds and beasts. DAVID: You come with a sword, a spear, and a javelin. I come to you in the name of the Lord, the God of Israel. This day, He will deliver you into my hands. I will strike you down. After I kill you, God s people will destroy the Philistines. GOLIATH lets out a mighty roar and reaches for his spear while DAVID raises his slingshot. NARRATOR: (Yells loudly) Hold it! (Runs between DAVID and GOLIATH with arms outstretched to stop them, turns to face audience) This is just a reenactment. (Turns to DAVID and GOLIATH) You re just actors playing these parts. You can t really kill each other on stage! (DAVID and GOLIATH look disappointed.) Now you, Goliath, head that way (Points offstage), and you, David, head that way (Points the other direction). (DAVID and GOLIATH slowly EXIT, dejected. NARRATOR wipes back of hand across forehead.) Whew! That was close. Well, I think you all know the end to this story, but I ll sum it up for you anyway. David killed Goliath. The stone that David hurled flew right into Goliath s forehead and made him fall. David rushed over to him, chopped off his head, and carried it with him to Jerusalem. Kind of gross, I know, but that s the way they did it in those days. When the Philistines saw what had happened to their hero, they turned and ran away. But the Israelites pursued them as far as Gath, Goliath s home. Many of the Philistines died that day, and David became a war hero. As you know, he later became king, and God blessed His people through him. Lesson 12, Page 3
