1 BUS 214 INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS QUANTITATIVE METHODS Online Syllabus Summer 2015 Instructor: Office Hours: Ms. Cassie Weitzenkamp, CPA, MPA TJM 234 (located in the School of Professional Studies suite) Monday-Friday: by appointment only Office Telephone: Address: *Preferred method Course Meets: Online Required Textbook: Slater, J. (11 th edition). Practical Business Math Procedures. McGraw-Hill. ( ). E-book options are available. Required Software: Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, & PowerPoint), and McGraw-Hill Connect subscription. Course Description & Objectives This course introduces basic business quantitative concepts to students. Basic business math, banking practices, trade discounts, markups and markdowns, breakeven analysis, payroll, credit installment purchases, mortgage finance vs. refinance, simple and compound interest calculations, annuities and sinking funds, interpretation of financial reports, depreciation, inventory, taxation, insurance, and an understanding of the elements of the stock market are included in the course. Students are introduced to basic business statistics and the use of advanced Excel in the course. Prerequisites: CMIS 101 Upon completion of this course you should be able to: 1. Understand and calculate results using basic quantitative applications as they apply to varying sectors of business. 2. Use quantitative applications as they apply to banking, insurance and the financial services industry. 3. Understand and calculate mark ups, mark downs, and basic breakeven analysis.
2 4. Understand and interpret financial statements. 5. Understand and calculate taxation issues as they apply to government, business, and industry. 6. Understand the stock market and calculate yields, ratios, and return on investment. 7. Understand and employ the use of advanced Excel in business applications. At the beginning of the course, we will discuss how these objectives fit into the College s and School s mission and goals. The instructor reserves the right to modify any aspect of the course syllabus or content. Any modifications will be communicated to students in advance. Expectations & Instructional Approach All material submitted must be your own. Student dishonesty in assignments is a serious concern and will be treated seriously with penalties including failing individual assignments or failing the entire class. All assignments, homework, or other assigned material are due by 11:59 PM Sunday with the exception of the final exam which is due by 11:59 PM Friday. I will post all material on Blackboard including assignments and extra learning material. In addition, you are welcome to me with questions and concerns about any subject material. Please refer to my contact information above. is my preferred contact method. Participation in class activities is vital to learning, and your participation can be critical for others. Please post early on discussion boards to assist your fellow learners. Please be respectful of other students at all times. In order to foster a climate conducive to learning, please join me in treating your classmates with respect. I encourage students to ask questions, seek my help when they need it, and help their classmates understand the material. There is an Online Classroom forum available on the discussion board for all questions of a non-private nature. Please use this resource both to ask questions and also to see if your question has already been asked. You can even subscribe to this discussion board and get s when a new post is created or a thread is commented on. If a question is asked by one of your fellow classmates and you feel comfortable providing assistance, please do. Not only can you help your classmates in this way, but it also can serve as a way for you to confirm your understanding of the material when I review the post.
3 Assessment and Grading Class Attendance and Participation: Participation in class discussion (if applicable) and posting early in the discussion boards will be key to your success. ly Assignments: Each week there will be a homework assignment posted in Connect that must be completed. As stated above, all homework is due by 11:59 pm Sunday with exception of the final week of assignments which will be due by 11:59 PM Friday. In addition to the homework assignment that is to be completed in Connect, we will have weekly discussion board assignments on Blackboard. Students will be required to respond to the posted prompt and post a meaningful and thoughtful response to at least one other student s posting in order to get full credit for that week s assignment. Excel Assignments: Some of the chapters that we will cover will also have Excel assignments to accompany them. Excel exercises will also be due by 11:59 PM Sunday. These spreadsheet exercises are designed to further your understanding of Excel, while learning how it is utilized in business applications. Quizzes/Exams: There will be 8 quizzes over 21 chapters and one final exam (100 pts) which will be cumulative. Each week, one quiz will be assigned and correspond to the chapters introduced and is due by 11:59 PM each Sunday, with exception of the last quiz over Chapters 21 and 22 and the final exam which will be due by 11:59 PM on Friday. The Quizzes and Final Exam must be completed in Blackboard by the posted deadline, with no exception. Late Assignment Policy: If a situation develops that prohibits you from completing your homework by the due date, it is your responsibility to contact me prior to the due date to see if alternative arrangements are possible. Requests to turn in an assignment late are not automatically granted and it is up to my discretion whether students will be allowed to submit an assignment late.
4 Grading Scale Your final grade will be based on an allocation of each component of the coursework required based on the following (rounded) percentages Connect Homework 39 % (311 points) Quizzes 26 % (210 points) Discussion Board 10 % ( 80 points) Excel Assignments 12.5% (100 points) Final Exam 12.5% (100 points) Total 801 points Final letter grades will be assessed by the following percentages: % = A 75-70% = C 89-86% = B % = D % = B 65-60% = D 79-76% = C+ < 60% = F College s Incomplete Coursework Policy To designate a student s work in a course as incomplete at the end of a term, the instructor records the incomplete grade (I). Students may receive this grade only when serious illness, hardship, death in the immediate family, or military service during the semester in which they are registered prevents them from completing course requirements. In addition, to receive an incomplete, a student must have completed substantially all of the course s major requirements. Unless extenuating circumstances dictate otherwise, students must initiate requests for an incomplete by filling out an Incomplete Grade Completion Contract, which requires the signature of the student, instructor, and Dean. The Incomplete Grade Completion contract cites the reason(s) for the incomplete and details the specific obligations the student must meet to change the incomplete to a letter grade. The date by which the student agrees to complete required work must appear in the contract. The Dean, the instructor, and the student receive signed copies of the Incomplete Grade Completion Contract. Even if the student does not attend Peru State College, all incomplete course work must be finished by the end of the subsequent semester. Unless the appropriate Dean approves an extension and if the student does not fulfill contract obligations in the allotted time, the incomplete grade automatically becomes an F.
5 College s Academic Integrity Policy The College expects all students to conduct themselves in a manner that supports an honest assessment of student learning outcomes and the assignment of grades that appropriately reflect student performance. It is ultimately the student s responsibility to understand and comply with instructions regarding the completion of assignments, exams, and other academic activities. At a minimum, students should assume that at each assessment opportunity they are expected to do their own original academic work and/or clearly acknowledge in an appropriate fashion the intellectual work of others, when such contributions are allowed. Students helping others to circumvent honest assessments of learning outcomes, or who fail to report instances of academic dishonesty, are also subject to the sanctions defined in this policy. Instances of academic dishonesty may be discovered in a variety of ways. Faculty members who assign written work ordinarily check citations for accuracy, run data base and online checks, and/or may simply recognize familiar passages that are not cited. They may observe students in the act of cheating or may become aware of instances of cheating from the statements of others. All persons who observe or otherwise know about instances of cheating are expected to report such instances to the proper instructor or Dean. In order to promote academic integrity, the College subscribes to an electronic service to review papers for the appropriate citations and originality. Key elements of submitted papers are stored electronically in a limited access database and thus become a permanent part of the material to which future submissions are compared. Submission of an application and continued enrollment signifies your permission for this use of your written work. Should an occurrence of academic misconduct occur, the faculty member may assign a failing grade for the assignment or a failing grade for the course. Each incident of academic misconduct should be reported to the Dean and the Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA). The VPAA may suspend for two semesters students found to be responsible for multiple instances of academic dishonesty. The reason for the suspension will be noted on the student s transcript. A faculty member need present only basic evidence of academic dishonesty. There is no requirement for proof of intent. Students are responsible for understanding these tenets of academic honesty and integrity. Students may appeal penalties for academic dishonesty using the process established for grades appeals.
