Non-Verbal Communication More important than the words you use

Preface Position of a coach is a position of power Exaggerated power when coaching children vs. adults Male vs. Female Coach Male coaches project more power and dominance than female coaches Know Your Audience Players come with different experience levels

Non-Verbal Statistics Words account for only 7% Tone of voice accounts for 38% Body language accounts for 55%

Tone of Voice

What is Tone of Voice? Tone of voice isn t what we say, but how we say it. It s the sound of our words and the personality we communicate Inflection, volume, intensity, pitch, etc.

Dissecting Tone Volume loud or soft Intensity Energy behind the words Pitch High, normal, low Practice vs. tournament Inflection the way we BEND a word

Perception Based on Tone

Combine Tone with Facial Expression Tone, combined with facial expressions completes the message Inflection, volume, intensity, pitch, etc. + Frown, furrow, smile, etc.

Perceptions of Facial Expressions Type Pursed lips Furrowed brow Upturned mouth Head shake Result Anger Questioning or frustration Agreement, confidence Negative or positive

If 38% of what we say is tone, what are we really saying?

Correlate to Behavioral Outcomes Do non-verbals govern how we feel about others?

Can We Predict Outcomes Using Non-Verbals? Yes, there is scientific proof that we draw conclusions which predict outcomes based entirely on non-verbal cues 30 sec sound clip of a physician can determine if they are likely to be sued. Indicates they are not based on competency 1 sec flash of a presidential candidate face can predict the outcome of the election Non-verbal body language influences outcomes Can I influence the outcomes of my coaching by changing my non-verbal body language?

Can Non-verbals Change Me? Does our own non-verbal body language influence what we feel/think about ourselves? Yes 2 minutes/day can change how you think about yourself

Can we influence what players think about themselves? 2 minute posing at every practice Wonder woman, Superman, Finish Line Winners Constant open body language reminders Stand straight and tall Open shoulders, chin up at line up(s)
