They follow a standard structural syllabus, with purpose-designed functional, skills and learning awareness syllabi. Each module takes between classroom hours, depending on use of extension activities. The Student s Book contains a review section, language reference section and audioscripts. The Teacher s Guide also contains instructions and answers, a placement test, six progress tests and supplementary materials. The audio is available on CD. 3 General English Elementary Modules 1-6 (DRAFT) This is a draft version of the new elementary English language modules. This draft contains the first half of the elementary level resource along with a draft version of the audio. The final and complete version will be available mid Student s Book, Teacher s Guide, Audio CD Reading and Writing 3: Narrating Past Events This high pre-intermediate level module focuses on the skills and structures needed to write about past events. It focuses on writing biographies, and includes biographical information about Mahadevi Yanwghwe, Chao Tzang Yanwghwe, Naw Louisa Benson and Thakin Kodaw Hmaing. It also introduces the skill of summarising. Student s Book, Teacher s Guide Reading and Writing 2: Describing Pictures and People Reading and Writing 1: Writing Journals and Book Reviews This module introduces extensive reading (book reviews) and writing (journals). It is suitable for high elementary to low intermediate level students, and takes approximately classroom hours. Student s Book, Teacher s Guide This early pre-intermediate level module will take approximately 20 hours of class time. It covers language and skills useful when students are describing people and situations. It also introduces self-editing using a correction code. Student s Book, Teacher s Guide Persuasion This module is designed to develop students skills in using English to understand and create texts meant to persuade. Students will learn and use language techniques and skills that will enable them to recognise opinion and persuasive writing as well as construct clear opinions and strong arguments based on good evidence. It also provides some grammar review and several practice tasks. This resource is meant for intermediate level students. Student s Book, Teacher s Guide 2 3

4 Romeo and Juliet: A Play and Film Study Guide This looks at William Shakepeare s famous play about doomed young lovers from rival families. It contains a simplified English version of the play, the 1996 film, comprehension and extension activities to accompany the play and film, and suggestions for classes who want to perform the play. Suitable for pre-intermediate levels or higher. Student s Book, Teacher s Guide, DVD Skyjack! A Reading and Listening Module Skyjack! is an exciting story following events surrounding a hijacking of a plane. Written in preintermediate English with an accompanying audio cassette, students can read and listen, and then do the accompanying comprehension and extension exercises. Student s Book, Teacher s Guide, Audio CD Movie Guides Movie guides contain teachers notes and photocopiable student worksheets with background information, plot synopses, exercises and a copy of the DVD for the movie. 5 Social Studies Introduction to Social Studies An introduction to the basic ideas behind the study of development, politics, economics, geography and history, written for first year post-secondary students. This module is written at a preintermediate level of English, and has been translated into Burmese. Student s Book (English) Teacher s Guide (English) Environment Issues This module takes about 30 classroom hours, and focuses on local, regional and global environmental topics. It takes a problem-solving approach, and examines local solutions to environmental problems. The teacher s guide contains an additional study guide for the famous documentary An Inconvenient Truth along with the DVD. Teacher s Guide (English) Southeast Asia This module follows on from Introduction to Social Studies, with a more explicit regional focus. Students study early cultures, the influence of India and China, European expansion, colonialism and independence. It also looks at some of the problems faced by newly independent nations. Teacher s Guide (English) A History of Burma from a Multiethnic Perspective This module looks at Burma s past from pre-history to the current situation. It takes a reflective approach; presenting historical events from a number of viewpoints and directing learners to evaluate sources, compare experiences and formulate their own conclusions. 6 GENDER PERSPECTIVES Economics: An Introduction Gender Perspectives This module is designed to equip learners with basic economic literacy. It covers introductory economic theory as well as more complex themes such as economic systems and globalisation. It places a strong emphasis on analytical thinking, asking learners to apply new knowledge to their own situations and communities. Teacher s Guide (English, Burmese) Written by both men and women, this module provides a perspective of gender roles at work, in religion, politics, education and family, and includes a chapter on gender-based violence. Throughout the module students are encouraged to think about the roles of men and women within their own communities. Teacher s Guide (English, Burmese) International Crisis and Conflict This comprehensive, higher level module was written in 2004 an update is planned. It looks at the contemporary international political situation the War on Terror, the situation in the Middle East, and background material on the Cold War. It requires a lot of independent reading by students, and is most suitable for students with good intermediate level English. Teacher s Guide (English, Burmese) Systems of Democracy A critical introduction to world political ideologies. This module analyses the advantages and disadvantages of different systems in theory and practice, with case studies from around the world. It is written in intermediate-level English. 7 Maths These modules make a one year post-secondary maths course. They consist of an English language Student s Book and Teacher s Guide. Maths Module 1: Numbers Some of the topics covered in the module are a review of basic arithmetic, fractions, ratio, percentages and indices. Maths Module 2: Algebra It is designed to review basic algebra before moving to quadratic equations, sequences and the laws of indices. Maths Module 3: Statistics It covers all the topics needed to teach students how to present and interpret data. Students will create different charts and graphs and use standard techniques to draw conclusions and make predictions. Maths Module 4: Geometry It covers Geometry and Trigonometry, which are extremely useful in design, science, architecture, and engineering. Science Basic Chemistry Physics 1: Atoms & Molecules; Physics 2: Gas Laws: Pressure, Volume & Temperature; Physics 3: Motion & Force Practical Physics Planet Earth Film Guide (Earth Sciences & Biology) Science Practical Handbook Introduction to Teaching Skills Teaching Resources Introduction to Teaching Skills is designed as a textbook for a course in teaching skills, but can also serve as a useful guide for current teachers who would like to improve some of their skills. This module covers the following areas: the role of the teacher, how students learn, classroom management, lesson planning, assessment, student-centred learning and how to use activities and resources in the classroom. Trainee Book (English, Burmese), Trainer Guide (English, Burmese) Two Truths, One Lie This teaching aid organises over 100 classroom activities for language teachers to use. These activities include participative techniques and can help classes become more student-centred. Listed by activity type, these activities contain clear, concise instructions to help the teacher apply these activities to their lesson plans and curriculum. It is a great resource to have available for any language teacher. Available in English

8 Activate! Activate! is a guide to using activities in learning. The introduction gives a basic overview to help teachers plan their topics, lessons and activities. The rest of the book presents 61 tried and tested activities, and explains at which stage of a topic they can be most effectively used. Available in English. Community Development Other Resources World of Knowledge This is an ELT board-game containing over 600 questions on a variety of different subjects, including English, people, history, geography, food and drink, and general knowledge. Although the content is wide-ranging there is a focus across all categories on Burma and Southeast Asia. Community Profiles and Needs Assessment This module looks at ways to analyse a community and determine what its needs are. It is currently only available in Burmese. Student s Book (Burmese) Teacher s Guide (Burmese) Directory of Further and Adult Education on the Thai-Burma Border A comprehensive list of schools, education programmes and organisations catering to adult and post-secondary students. 9 The Curriculum Project (CP) develops and distributes teaching materials to post-secondary and adult education programmes on the Burma border. CP also delivers teacher training and other assistance to schools and education programmes. Materials CP materials are designed especially for the border context. CP develops materials for English Language Learning, Social Studies, Science, Maths and Community Development. Most Social Studies materials are available in Burmese translation. Teacher s Guides contain teaching notes, answers, background information and extra ideas for activities. They are designed for teachers with little teaching experience or knowledge of the subject, as well as experienced teachers. CP staff are happy to answer any of your questions about which materials are suitable for your class. Schools or organisations working with Burmese post-secondary or adult students can get a free copy of each of our materials (depending on budget). CP materials can be downloaded free at our website. CP materials are often mass printed which makes them cheaper than photocopying your own copies. Library CP also has an extensive library of resources to supplement those we produce. It contains textbooks from around the world on many topics. Anyone involved in education (teachers, trainers, students, etc.) along the border is weclome to access and use the library.
