Venez assister séminaire LATECE Le Laboratoire de Recherches en Technologie du Commerce Électronique Le Web des objets: buzzword ou réalité en devenir? The Internet of things: buzzword or forthcoming reality? Où et Quand? Mercredi 15 Mai 2013 De 12:15 À 13 h00 UQAM, Salle PK-4610 Ygal Bendavid, Professeur Département de Management & Techno. Pour votre séminaire aujourd hui Ygal Bendavid Professeur, ESG-UQÀM Département M&T Gestion des opérations & TI Co-Fondateur de Academia RFID BAA, M.Sc.A., Ph.D.
Outline of the seminar Context of the presentation Concepts and Buzzwords IoT definitions from professionals IoT definitions from academia RFID & other AIT in the IoT RFID & IOT in the trends IoT in the hype cycle IoT research areas Forthcoming conferences on IoT IoT special issues in journals The context Just 30 years since the launch of digital cellular, over 6 billion people now have a mobile phone; yet, we are on the threshold of a far bigger global shift in the use of wireless technology by being able to give any number of physical objects an online digital presence (Cleevely D., Chairman of Cambridge Wireless, 2013) During 2008, the number of things connected to the Internet exceeded the number of people on earth (Cisco, 2008) Over 30 Billion Wireless-connected Devices to Be Part of the IoE in 2020 (ABI Research, 2013)
IoT in our everyday life Source: CISCO IBSG, J. Coconni, AT&T, S. Leibson, Computer History Museum, CNN, University of Michigan, Fraunhofer - Concepts and Buzzwords Ubiquitous computing (Ubi-comp) The Internet of Things (IoT) Pervasive computing The Web of Things (WoT) the Web of Things and People (WoTaP) the Social Internet of Things (SIoT) Machine-to-Machine (M2M) Smart things Intelligent objects Ambient intelligence Autonomous devices
Concepts and Buzzwords Top Trends for 2013 IEEE Computer Society journals, magazines, and conferences are continually at the forefront of current technology trends ( ) technology topics that will be focusing on next year 1) Internet of Things The Internet of Things is more than just the newest buzzword. The IoT promises to be the most disruptive technological revolution since the advent of the World Wide Web. IoT definitions from professionals Simply put, the IoT implies the ability of almost anything to communicate with any other thing via the Internet Paul Steinberg, Motorola's chief technology officer The IoT is an evolution of RFID rather than something entirely new it is not, in itself one particular application or one particular technology [ ] like today's RFID systems, only more powerful and pervasive Henryi Barthel, VP of system integrity and global partnerships for Brussels-based GS1 NFC is quickly becoming a social enabler and a popular technology for the public, helping end users gather additional information about objects and helping to link them to [other] objects and locations Victor Vega, director of RFID solutions for NXP Semiconductors J. Edwards, The Internet of Things, from concept to reality: Plans for a network that connects everything and everyone everywhere are well underway, RFID Journal, vol.9, no.2, p.31-35, 2012.
IoT perspectives IoT Technical perspective Application perspective Perceived in term of infrastructure i.e., viewed as an extension to the Internet Seen as another Internet-enabled service Idea from - E. Fleisch, What is the Internet of Things? An Economic Perspective, Auto-ID Labs White Paper WP-BIZAPP-053, IoT Semantic origin of the expression Two words and concepts: Internet Thing IoT Internet Thing
IoT definitions from Academia a world-wide network of interconnected objects uniquely addressable, based on standard communication protocols When considering the functionality and identity dimension (Interconnected) things having identities and virtual personalities operating in smart spaces using intelligent interfaces to connect and communicate within social, environmental, and user contexts. DG INFSO and EPoSS, 2008, Internet of Things in 2020, a Roadmap for the future, The Information Society and Media Directorate-general of the European Commission (DG INFSO) and the European Technology Platform on Smart Systems Integration (EPoSS), Version May, The Internet of Things The Internet of Things allows people and things to be connected Anytime, Anyplace, with Anything and Anyone, ideally using Any path/network and Any service CERP-IoT, (2009) Internet of Things: Strategic Research Roadmap, Report from the Cluster of European Research Projects (FP7) on the Internet of Things (CERP-IoT). 8 EPC Global & the IoT EPCglobal Standards Overview Discovery is finding and obtaining all relevant visibility data, of which a party is authorized, when some of that data is under the control of other parties with whom no prior business relationship exists. 10 RFID in our everyday life Source: Victor Vega, RFID Solutions Marketing Director NXP Semiconductors, RFID Journal Live 2011 Some Challenges that are ahead Making available, and at low cost, the technology to equip trillions of objects raises numerous challenges such as The need dto integrate t and ensure interoperability among multiple l heterogeneous systems and data/communication standards, Manage huge data volumes arriving in real time, Ensure scalability of the environment, Address privacy and security issues, Address legal and regulatory concerns ce Etc. F. Mattern and C. Floerkemeier, From the Internet of Computers to the Internet of Things, in K. Sachs, I. Petrov and P. Guerrero ed., From active data management to event-based systems and more, pp , Springer-Verlag Berlin, Heidelberg, 2010.
Some areas of research With respect to the diverse range of technos supporting the IoT Sensing, to automatically identify any thing and capture its condition computing and processing, to manage the amount of data collected and exchanged and process the information networking and communicating, to connect the things and communicate with their environment using established communication protocols and standards embedded bddd intelligence to ensure things self-management energy harvesting for intelligent devices to be power efficient and reliable built in security to prevent any form of hacking.
