1 Algebra 1 Syllabus Certificated Teacher: Date: Desired Results Course Title/Grade Level: Algebra 1A and 1B Credit: one semester (.5) x two semesters (1) Estimate of hours per week engaged in learning activities 5 hours of class work per week. Prerequisites and/or recommended preparation: Successful completion of 8th Grade Level Math or Pre-Algebra Instructional Materials: All learning activity resources and folders are contained within the student online course. Online course is accessed via login and password assigned by student s school (web account) or ed directly to student upon enrollment, with the login website. This course requires a MathXL account which will be provided by your course instructor. Optional Graphing Calculator (Approximately $50-$100). Many online graphing calculators can do what is required of this course and are free. Course Overview: Algebra is the foundation for other mathematics and sciences. Students will learn to symbolically manipulate, graph and analyze functions and/or equations. Using real-world examples, students, will reason, problem solve and communicate their understanding of the mathematics and how it relates to the original example. Enduring Understandings for Course: Symbols, such as numbers and variables, can be manipulated using different processes and operations to represent real-life quantities and their relationships. Equations are dynamic tools for problem solving, communicating and expressing ideas and concepts. Functions are used to represent the relationship between unknown quantities. Graphs are visual representations of functions/numerical relationships. Logical reasoning and Problem Solving enable us to approach a problem, explain reasoning and check answers in order to move from simple ideas to complex ones. Establish Goals: (Grade Level Expectations) A1.1 Solving Problems A1.2 Numbers, expressions and operations A1.3 Characteristics and behaviors of functions A1.4 Linear functions, equations and inequalities A1.5 Quadratic functions and equations A1.6 Data and distributions A1.7 Additional Key Content A1.8 Reasoning, problem solving and communication. Understandings: understand how to compute fluently and Essential Questions: What are the rules and properties

2 make reasonable estimates understand patterns, relations and functions understand how to use algebraic symbols to understand the components and geometric relationships on the Cartesian Plane understand measurable attributes of objects and units, systems and processes of measurement understand relationships in bivariate data understand there are multiple ways to solve a problem understand mathematical conjectures understand that mathematics is a language unto itself understand that mathematical representations facilitate communication of ideas understand that mathematics exists in contexts outside the mathematics classroom understand how to model the mathematics using different representation (i.e. table, graph, equation). available for us to use? What tools or skills are needed to effectively compute with numbers? How can we manipulate the unknown? How can algebraic equations be represented? What does the line or system on a graph represent or communicate? How do you find and represent an unknown value(s)? How do you solve a system of equations or inequalities? How do you solve quadratic equations and what does the solution mean? How can a graph or equation helpyou represent a situation? What are the relationships among the various solutions of a quadratic equation and how do the solutions help in visually expressing the data? How do I know where to begin in solving a problem? How do I decide which strategy will work best in a given problem solving situation? How do I know when result is reasonable? Students will know: How to model various situations with many powerful mathematical tools and then using those models to make predictions and solve real world problems. Students will be able to: Apply and use linear models Apply and use exponential models Apply and use radical models Apply and use quadratic models Apply and use systems of linear equations Evidence of Assessment What evidence will be collected to determine whether or not the understandings have been developed, the knowledge and skill attained, and the state standards met? [Anchor the work in performance tasks that involve application, supplemented as needed by prompted work, quizzes, observations, etc.] Performance Tasks: The students will work through a web based math program (MathXL) to master the unit targets based on state standards. Once the work is complete in MathXL, the students will assess their knowledge on individual target quizzes and then an overall Unit test to gauge their understanding of the state standards. Other Evidence (self-assessments, observations, work samples, quizzes, tests and so on): Quizzes/Assessments in MathXL Target quizzes based on state standards

In particular we will look at causality vs. association, making conclusions from data, and analyze effects of linear transformations on statistical measures. UNIT 2: OVERVIEW OF FUNCTIONS This first unit sets the stage for the year. The big idea is that many different functions can be used to model real life and these functions help us make predictions and solve problems. This unit introduces the idea of a function and exposes students to six types. Vocabulary and function language is introduced. Students will grow in their understanding and mastery of vocabulary such as domain and range as well as use of function notation throughout the year. Unit 3: Linear Models This unit will focus on analyzing data that has a strong correlation. What linear model best fits? How do you write equations for such models? How do you use the model to answer

4 questions? Explicit and recursive formulas will be used to describe linear relationships: (repeated addition) Graphical, numerical, and algebraic techniques will be used to solve linear equations. Unit 4: Systems of Equations This unit will focus on solving systems of linear equations graphically, numerically, and analytically. 2 nd SEMESTER LEARNING ACTIVITIES ALGEBRA 1 Unit 5: Exponential Models This unit will focus on analyzing data that is best modeled with an exponential function. What model best fits? How do you write equations for such models? How do you use the model to answer questions? Graphical and numerical techniques will be used to solve exponential equations. Explicit and recursive formulas will be used to describe exponential relationships: (repeated multiplication) We will also work with the properties of exponents. Unit 6: Absolute Value Functions This unit will take a quick look at absolute value functions. We will look at transformations of the graphs of absolute value functions. Solving equations involving absolute value expressions will be solved algebraically and graphically. Unit 7: Radical Functions Launching from the idea of fractional exponents in exponential models, we will look at radical functions. Simplified radical forms, domain and range, and function notation will be the focus. Graphical and numerical techniques will be used to solve radical equations. Unit 8: Quadratic Models This unit will focus on analyzing data that is best modeled with a quadratic function. What quadratic model best fits? How do you write equations for such models? How do you use the model to answer questions? Graphical and numerical techniques will be used to solve quadratic equations. Various forms of quadratic functions as well as key features of quadratic graphs will be the focus. Furthermore, the skills needed to understand quadratic expressions will be studied expanding, factoring, completing the square, the quadratic formula, and solving quadratic equations algebraically.
