2 R 2 1/09.9 Functional description Check-Q-eters are used in hydraulic systems to control speeds of hydraulic motors and cylinders independent of load, (prevent runaway). dditionally, an isolation function is possible if plumbing failures occur. The Check-Q-eter is comprised of housing (1), main poppet (2), pilot piston (3), pilot spool (4), dampening spool (), and pilot dampening orifice (6). Lifting the load The valve opens in a free-flow direction from port to port. ain poppet (2) opens at a cracking pressure of 30 PSI (2 bar), and load induced pressure at port () is available to chamber (8). This permits closure of main poppet (2) should a plumbing failure occur between the Check-Q-eter and the directional control. The annulus area of control spool (4) remains positioned against the collar of dampening spool (). The pressure required at port to open to is controlled by the spring in chamber (9). The pressure required to begin opening to is 290 PSI (20 bar); to fully open 2 PSI (0 bar) is required. The opening cross-section for flow control increases progressively. It is created by the successive opening of radial drillings on the sleeve and main poppet (2). The relationship between control pressure, cracking pressure, and differential pressure determines flow to the actuator via to. Thus, uncontrolled movement of actuators is prevented. The controlled lowering procedure is not affected even if there is a plumbing failure between the directional valve and port. Guidelines for opening & closing times of the Check-Q-eter Throttling of the opening sequence is via orifice (6) in control spool (4) and both sides of dampening spool (). The closing movement of the Check-Q-eter is virtually unthrottled. When being applied in conjunction with cylinders, a throttle/ check valve (meter out control) can be installed in port to influence closing speed. When being applied in conjunction with motors, a throttle check valve should not be installed in the control line to port. In this case, it is recommended that the response times of the directional valve are controlled. rr T /8

3 Circuit examples Single rod cylinders For safety, blocked ports on the directional valve (ports & ) should be considered. Hydraulic motors R 2 1/09.9 Due to the internal leakage of hydraulic motors, positive load holding can not be assured by leak-free closure of the counterbalance and lock valve. For positive load holding, it is recommended to use a spring applied, hydraulically released mechanical brake, as below. If the brake is externally piloted, it is possible to use a blocked port directional control valve. P T Note: Two cylinders operating in parallel, and not mechanically tied together, cannot be controlled by two individual Check-Q-eters, (there is no way to guarantee cylinder synchronization). solution may be to apply two externally drained pilot operated check valves (Rexroth odel SL) to prevent cross flow between the cylinders during load holding, and one Check-Q-eter as illustrated. In this case, load induced pressure should not exceed 2900 PSI (200 bar). Y 3/8
