1 Christingle 2016 Act of Collective Worship Preparation & Materials You will need: 1 x Large pillar candle A box of matches A pre-made Christingle for each class in school Copies of the Bible readings to give out to readers (see end of this resource) Candle templates (see end of this resource) Christingle Act of Collective Worship: PowerPoint (optional) Preparation in Advance: Make one Christingle for each class. (See our How to make a Christingle resource if you re unsure how to do this) Choose pupils to read and provide them with their reading make sure they are seated in various areas around the worship space and know what their cue will be (Note: they do not have to read out the Bible references these are for your information) Place baskets of candle templates near the entrance/exit or give them to class teachers for distribution at the end Play Let there be Light (see PowerPoint for embedded YouTube version) as the pupils come into the worship space Liaise with your local vicar to see if they would like to take the opportunity to lead the service and meet with the children The Act of Collective Worship 1. Welcome [slide 2] Welcome the children and staff. Explain that at this time of year, Christians prepare for/celebrate (depending on whether you are delivering this before or after Christmas) the birth of Jesus. 1

2 Ask the children how they celebrate their birthdays take two or three answers. Explain that you have baked a special birthday cupcake for Jesus (click to bring the image up) ask them what they think is missing from the cake (a candle). Explain that Christians light candles to celebrate Jesus birth, but also to remind them of Jesus. 2. Hearing God s Word [slide 3] (If possible, darken the worship space at this point.) When the children have settled, explain that 2000 years ago when Jesus was born, things felt very dark. The Jewish people living in the area where he was born and lived were being ruled over by the Romans. Life was tough. People felt hopeless. (Give the readers their cue to read their bible verses.) When they have finished, ask another child to help you light a large pillar candle (Remind them to be careful and to stand back from the flame once the candle has been lit). Explain that Christians believe that when Jesus was born, a light came into the world to light the darkness and bring hope to those who felt hopeless. 3. Exploring God s Word [slide 4] Explain that The Children s Society is a charity that supports vulnerable and disadvantaged children to help bring light and hope into their lives. Every year, they encourage us to celebrate Christingle as a reminder of the hope and light that Jesus brought into the world. Hold up an unlit Christingle and explain its symbolism: the orange symbolises the whole world, showing that everyone, no matter who they are, deserves to have hope; the red ribbon symbolises God s love for everyone in the world; the fruit and sweets symbolise the good things of the world that we share together; the candle represents Jesus, the light of the world, who brings light, hope and love to all. Explain that the funny thing about candles is that they can give light without losing light demonstrate by lighting the Christingle from the large pillar candle. Tell the children that in the Bible, Jesus tell his followers to share their light all the good 2

3 things they do, all the love they have with others so that everyone can have hope (Matthew ). Explain that you are going to ask the teachers from each class to come up and light a class Christingle so that the light of love and hope can be shared with everyone in school. (Staff come up and light their Christingles from the worship leader s Christingle/each other s Christingles.) 4. Song [Slides 5 and 6] (You can turn on the lights now, if you wish to.) Invite everyone to join in singing (You may like to use the YouTube clip embedded on the next slide or use your own materials). 5. Prayer [Slides 7] Invite everyone to join you in prayer: Loving Lord, we thank you for the light in our lives, for those who give us love and hope. We thank you for The Children s Society as it brings light to children and young people who feel unloved or without hope. Help us to always be a light shining in the darkness so that we can share the love of God with those around us. In the name of Jesus Christ, the light of the world, Amen. We pray together the prayer Jesus taught us, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, 3

4 as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. 6. The real meaning of Christmas [Slide 8] Remind the children that we have been celebrating Christingle and giving thanks for the work of The Children s Society, which brings hope and light to children just like them. Set the children a challenge: ask them to think about the ways in which they can bring light into the world. Tell them to collect a candle template on their way out of collective worship. Explain that, when they get back to class, you would like them to write or draw one thing in their candle that they are going to do to bring light into the world. It could be something to show their love for someone they care for, or something that will bring hope to someone who is struggling or feeling sad. It could be a promise to support the work of The Children s Society by telling people about it or raising money for it so that they can continue to help those who need hope. Suggest that they could make a display of these promises around their class Christingle, so that every time they look at the Christingle it will remind them of their promise to bring light into the world. (Staff could hand out candle template to pupils or you could place the templates in baskets near the exits for pupils to collect if they wish to.) As the pupils leave, you could play another song associated with light and hope, such as Shine, Jesus, Shine. 4

5 Christingle 2016 Collective Worship Bible Readings the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light... (Matthew 4.16) The light shines in the darkness and the darkness did not overcome it. (John 1.5) Jesus spoke to them, saying, I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. (John 8.12) You are the light of the world let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works. (Matthew ) 5
