3 Tea Plantation Worker SYLLABUS / CURRICULUM This course encompasses 7 out of 7 National Occupational Standards (NOS) of Tea Plantation Worker Qualification Pack AGR/Q0204 issued by Agriculture Skill Council of India. A Tea Plantation Worker is responsible to work in the Tea plantation on a given piece of land right from nursery preparation to harvesting and storage. Even though the tea plantation worker works under the direct monitoring of the supervisor there are certain standards of performance an individual must achieve when carrying out a function or task. The National Occupational Standards specify the standards of performance an individual must achieve when carrying out a function in the workplace, together with the knowledge and understanding they need to meet that standard consistently. These Occupational Standards are applicable both in the Indian and global contexts. As per these standards the tea plantation worker should work independently, be laborious and must have the ability to make operational decisions pertaining to his area of work. The trainee should gain clarity of work and should be result oriented. The trainee should also be able to demonstrate skills to use various tools in the tea plantation. The programme will help in building the following key competencies amongst the learner: Knowledge and Understanding: Adequate operational knowledge and understanding to perform the required task. Performance Criteria: Gain the required skills through hands on training and perform the required operations within the specified standards. Professional Skills: Ability to make operational decisions pertaining to the area of work. Soft Skills: To observe professional mannerisms and conduct during interaction with others. 1 Introduction to Tea Plantation State the interesting facts about tea. State the type of soil and climatic conditions suitable for growing tea. 1 hour 45 minutes 2 Nucleus Area/ Multiplication Area for Cuttings Prepare nucleus area or multiplication plot for obtaining vegetative propagation (VP) cuttings. 4 Syllabus State the parameters for selection of site for raising tea nursery; State the methods of propagation. State the types of nursery practices in tea. Prepare soil mixture for polythene sleeve/ bed nursery; 3 Nursery Bed Preparation in Tea Plantation Prepare polythene bags for planting cuttings. Prepare cuttings for raising nursery. Planting cuttings in polythene sleeve/ soil bed; 9 hours 15 minutes AGR / N 0024 State the post planting care of nursery raising. State the procedure to sow seeds in nursery beds/ sleeves. State the practices of nursery care. State the procedure for shading and hardening of the seedlings or cuttings. Prepare the field for transplanting tea plants. Transplant seedlings /cuttings through appropriate methods. 4 Land Preparation and Transplantation in Tea Plantation Put out stakes for planting; Prepare pits for planting. Apply manure at appropriate intervals; State and practice the appropriate method of fertiliser application; 5 hours 45 minutes AGR / N 0025 State the control measures for pest and diseases; Perform the cultural practices of cultivation after planting. 2

State the different methods of weed control; 5 hours 15 minutes AGR/ N 0026 Perform weeding as per recommendations and instructions. State the various cultural practices adopted to improve soil nutrition status. 6 Syllabus Identify signs and symptoms of damage by pests; Identify behaviour of the pest; Carry out chemical and non-chemical approaches to pest control. 7 Integrated Pest and Disease Management Identify signs and symptoms of different diseases; Identify the mode of transmission of diseases; Carry out chemical and non-chemical approaches to disease prevention and control. 4 hours 45 minutes AGR / N 0028 State the cultural operations and describe the impact on pest incidence. Use the required tools and equipments for disease and pest management. State the safety precautions during pesticide handling; Prepare and use the pesticides safely; 8 Safety and First Aid Read and understand the hazards of use and contamination mentioned on the labels of pesticides; Maintain a proper record of the pesticides and chemical application. 3 hours 30 minutes State the first aid measures in case of injury while working; List the items of a first aid kit. 4

State the methods of plucking; State the different plucking rounds followed to get the required type of shoots; State the effects of banjhi buds on the crop. Demonstrate plucking or harvesting operation. List the types of harvesters used in mechanical harvest; State the advantages and disadvantages of mechanical harvest; State the various ways of avoiding losses during harvest. Work effectively in teams. Imbibe values in life. Follow good health and hygiene guidelines. Observe the practices of nursery preparation and care. Observe the irrigation and drainage system in the tea garden. Assess the current knowledge on tea plantation of the trainees; Assess the post training knowledge of the trainees on tea plantation; Test the trainees on knowledge and skills acquired. 4 hours 30 minutes 10 hours Total Duration: 75 hours (Theory and Practical) + 50 hours On Job Training (OJT) = 125 hours Total duration of the syllabus/ curriculum has been approved by Agriculture Skill Council of India. 6
