The Town of Midland Parks System encompasses over acres of parkland throughout 28 community parks. The Parks system offers everyone the opportunity to enjoy a wide variety of leisure and sporting activities in a safe and well maintained environment throughout the community. In addition, there are km of Trails throughout the Town with many more planned for the immediate future. A walk through Midland s Municipal Parks reveals many peaceful surroundings and scenic vistas complete with paved and natural trails, urban forests, sports fields, picnic areas, basketball courts, beach volleyball courts, skateboard park, soccer fields, scenic lookouts, playground equipment as well as washroom facilities. Our parks and facilities are also wheelchair accessible. Our landscaped areas within our parks are designed to accommodate the natural surroundings, as well as encouraging wildlife habitats in our urban parkland environments. The Town of Midland takes pride in our unique naturalization program that is taking place along Rotary Trail and within several of our parks. The Parks Division has adopted regeneration and naturalization efforts as part of our initiative to rejuvenate and preserve the park landscapes as they once were. The town of Midland strongly believes in protecting and preserving sensitive areas within our parks by avoiding human encroachment in these areas.

4 Benefits of Recreation and Park Services Recreational Trails Map Have you ever thought what it would be like to live in a community with NO parks, NO arena, NO curling club, NO YMCA, NO sports, NO music or NO dance? Chances are you find a lifestyle with no recreation and park services to be extremely boring, with no opportunity to improve the quality of your life. A recently published catalogue lists a wide range of research done across Canada that supports the following statements: 1) Recreation and active living are essential to personal health a key determinant of health status. 2) Recreation is a key to balanced human development helping Canadians reach for their potential. 3) Recreation and parks are essential to Quality of Life 4) Recreation reduces self-destructive and anti-social behaviour 5) Recreation and parks build families and healthy communities 6) Recreation reduces health care, social service and police/ justice costs. 7) Recreation and parks are significant economic generators in the community 8) Parks, open spaces and natural areas are essential to ecological survival.

5 Music in the Park Parks and Recreation Mission Statement Music in the Park is hosted by the Rotary Club. This event is held at the Little Lake Park Bandstand, every Sunday evening during the months of June, July and August. To find out times and bands, please refer to the Community Calendar on the Town of Midland web site at The Midland Parks and Recreation Department shall ensure adequate opportunities exists for all citizens in the community to engage in satisfying and constructive leisure-time pursuits appropriate to their age, capabilities and personal interests through the provision of facilities, parks programs and support to the volunteer organizations and private agencies. 6 Parks and Recreation Goals 1) To ensure a wide variety of recreational sports and cultural program opportunities are available for all citizens 2) To provide well-maintained facilities, parks and playing fields in a safe environment to foster the growth and quality of programs provided by community sports, cultural and recreational groups 3) Enable and facilitate the delivery of recreational by encouraging and supporting volunteer community groups to provide sports and recreational services by encouraging and supporting volunteer Community Development approach 4) O maximize use and participation by the public in all programs, parks and facilities 5) Encourage the community use of schools through joint use agreements and projects as needs are identified and as resources become available. 6) Plan for the future growth of the municipality through various planning methods that provide for meeting the needs for new and expanded parks and facilities for recreation, sports and culture. 7) Maintain and develop adequate human and financial resources in order to provide a high quality of service in the parks, facilities recreational sports and cultural areas within the jurisdiction of the municipality. 8) To preserve and enhance the natural environment of the Municipal Parks property through Horticultural areas, Arboricultural practices and Natural Regeneration practices. Naming Municipal Parks & Recreation Facilities Financial Contribution/ Donation Names may be considered based on financial contributions and/ or donations of property. Depending on the amount, the naming opportunity may be for a specified length of time or in perpetuity. Signage The Town of Midland Parks and Recreation Department shall be responsible for the relevant signage and for the coordination of the pubic presentation to acknowledge the name or rename designation. All parks signs shall be the current standard used by the Parks and Recreation Department. DID YOU KNOW... Recreation, sports and arts/ culture build self-esteem and positive self image!

7 Naming Municipal Parks & Recreation Facilities Municipal Parks Map Policies 1) Potential conflicts if names within the 911 emergency service system must be minimized 2) Naming in honour of elected or appointed public officials or municipal staff shall normally occur only after the Town public service or employment has concluded. 3) Where the name of an individual is used, written approval shall be obtained from the individual or the next of kin for such naming. 4) Council, by resolution, may approve a name or name change in honour of individuals or groups when circumstances justify such action. Council may also remove the original name designation when circumstances justify such action. Naming Process The Director f parks and recreation shall present suggested names to Councils Community Service Committee for discussion and consideration. Such names shall be based on suggestions from the public, naming contests, an inventory of names or any other criteria mentioned in this policy. Provided legislation permits, all meetings where names are to be considered shall beheld in camera. The Community Service Committee shall then make a recommendation to Council with the suggested name for the Council consideration, along with all other names considered.

8 By law General Municipal Parks Rules Naming Municipal Parks & Recreation Facilities No person, except a person acting under the authority of a permit issues by the Director shall: 1) Enter into or remain in a park between the hours of 11:30 pm 5:00 am local time, from the first day of April to the thirteenth day of September, inclusive, in any calendar year 2) Enter into or remain in a park between the hours 10:00 pm and 5:00 am local time from the first day of October to the thirty-first day of March, inclusive, in any calendar year 3) Set off fireworks in the park 4) Damage, deface or remove any vegetation, building or equipment in a park, or a park building 5) Pollute any stream, drainage ditch, lake or pond in a park 6) Erect a shelter of any kind in a park 7) Possess liquor in a park 8) Hunt, kill, injure or disturb any wildlife in a park Goal To provide a policy for Council for the naming of municipal parks and recreation facilities in the Town of Midland. Policies for Naming Municipal Parks and Recreation Facilities This policy is to name parks and facilities in a manner that will provide an easy and recognizable reference to the Town s citizens. Names shall be considered based on the following criteria: 1) Geographic location related to the street name or neighbourhood 2) Historical, Cultural and Natural locations relate to a prominent, historical or cultural event or a predominant plant, tree, bush or flower of the surrounding area. 3) Individual recognition for a past or present resident of Midland who has contributed to the quality of life by way of the following: a) Demonstrated outstanding achievements, contributions or accomplishments to enrich the Town of Midland b) Demonstrated activity of a volunteer nature c) Sound moral and social character 4) Substantial financial contributions from Service Clubs, business, industry etc.

9 By law Midland Rotary Skateboard Park Winter Closure of Little Lake Park Road Hours of operation: 9:00 am 9:00 pm daily Report any damage to the North Simcoe Recreation Center at (705) ) Use at your own risk. Stake board Park is not supervised. Little Lake Park Road is closed annually from December 1st to April 15th. Winter maintenance will only be done on the section of Little Lake Park Road from the King Street entrance to an area by the stone staircase. 2) The Municipality is not responsible for any loss, damage or injury during Park use. 3) Helmet is mandatory; however, elbow, knee pads and wrist guards are strongly recommended for all users. 4) Recommended age of users without supervision is 13 years of age and over. 5) Park is closed during inclement weather due to increase in risk on injury. 6) Please help keep the Park clean of debris. 7) Emergency phones are located along the beach and a pay phone is available at the North Simcoe Sports and Recreation Center. 8) Please keep yourself and your friends from displaying behaviour that makes it unpleasant of dangerous for others. Graffiti, drug use, fighting and profanity are prohibited; all are grounds for banishment. 9) No other skateboard ramps, benches etc. are permitted on concrete surface. DID YOU KNOW... 10 Parks Policies and By-Laws Parks Policies and By-Laws User Fees User fees for the rental of park facilities (ball diamond, picnic shelters, beach volleyball courts, stage etc.) are revised every two years and are approved by Council. For current user fees, visit the Town of Midland Website or contact the Midland Parks and recreation Department at (705) ext Booking Park Facilities To book park facilities, please call (705) ext or us at Boat Launch A public boat launch facility is available at Pete Pettersen Park. If you are a resident of the Town of Midland, you may pick up a parking permit for the current year after April 15 th at the Midland Town Docks Office. This permit must be displayed in the vehicle with your boat trailer and is valid only in designated parking areas. If you are not a resident of Midland, you may launch your boat; however, you must arrange to park elsewhere for a minimal fee. (Bay Port Marian is recommended) For more information, please call (705) For more information about parking at Bay Port, please visit their site at: Open for Public Use Midland Parks and Trails are only maintained form April 15th to November 15th annually. Individuals who choose to use our parks and trails in the off season (November 16 th to April 14 th ) do so at their own risk. Tobogganing at Campbell s Hill Tobogganing is not supervised by the Town of Midland. There is no winter maintenance provided by the Town of Midland. Use at your own risk. Tobogganing is not permitted in any other municipal park. Do Not Feed Canada Geese and/ or Seagulls (By-Law 97-36) No person shall feed Canada geese and or/ seagulls within any park in the Town of Midland. No Smoking (By-Law 09-68) Smoking is prohibited within 10 meters of municipally owned playgrounds and ports fields. Boat Restriction on Little Lake (By-Law 95-78) No boat or water craft is permitted to operate on Little Lake with an engine that is rated above ten horsepower.
