4 March 7, 2010 God Made a Beautiful World Teacher Connection This week s Bible passage contains the beginnings of God s matchless creative work. Read Genesis 1:1-19. These verses focus on God s first four days of creation. Identify His activity on each of the four days. Verse 1 tells that God created the heavens and the earth. The following verses provide details about specific aspects of creation. Genesis 1:1 uses a word that is not used again until verse 21: created. In the Old Testament, the Hebrew is bara and refers only to divine activity, never to human activity. This word describes a spontaneous, supernatural event and carries the connotation of creating something out of nothing. Note that God spoke His creation into existence. All He had to do was speak the word, and light began to shine. On the second day, He spoke and created the atmosphere for the earth. God prepared the world for His next creation. On the third day, God created dry land. At His word, vegetation began to flourish, providing items that would be needed for future inhabitants of this incredible universe under construction. Some botanists believe that more than 350,000 different kinds of plants grow on earth and new species are discovered regularly. Jot down a list of things plants provide for us as part of meeting our everyday needs. On the fourth day, God created lights for the sky. God made the universe and everything in it. In creating the sun, moon, and stars, God established time days, seasons, and years. Again, notice how God performed His creative acts. He spoke, and the creation came into existence. The emphasis in Genesis 1 is not so much that God made something, but that God said something. Reflect on the awesome power at work in this unfolding drama of creation. Out of nothing, God brought something. Out of darkness, God brought light. Out of chaos, God brought order. Out of barrenness, God brought living plants. And so much more! Thanks be to God! 10 Passage: Genesis 1:1-19 Bible Truth: God made the sun, moon, stars, water, land, and plants. Life Application: I will learn that God made the world. Encourage preschoolers to draw a nighttime scene with the chalk on the dark paper. Play God s World Medley (track 13) as children draw. Ask preschoolers to share the things they do at night and during the day. Sing Look Up and See (track 2). Kid Connection: Remind preschoolers that God made night and day. Homeliving Center Bible Connection: God made rocks and trees. You need: Bible, tub of water, large towel, items God made that sink or float (rocks, leaves, sticks, pebbles, grass, etc.), Allergy Alert (enhanced CD) Set the tub of water on a large towel. Guide preschoolers to place items in the water and identify what will float or sink. Talk about what floating and sinking mean. Leave the container of water and the objects in the room and let the preschoolers play with the items. Ask pre-kindergartners to predict which objects will sink or float. Put each item in the water and see what happens. Group objects into sinkers and floaters. March 7, 2010 Kid Connection: Say the Bible phrase as children use the nature items. 11

6 Build a Park Blocks Center Bible Connection: God made flowers, trees, and plants. Encourage a child to rub an eraser back and forth gently on the foil until it makes an imprint of the leaf. Guide the preschooler to glue the foil leaf print onto a piece of construction paper and glue the leaf next to it. Print God made the trees on the paper. Sing the song God Made a Beautiful World. Let pre-kindergartners print the words themselves on their rubbings. Bonus Ideas Dot Paint the World God Made Provide construction paper. Allow preschoolers to use various colors of dot markers to paint a picture of one of the many things God made such as the sun, trees, flowers, and plants. Take a Nature Walk Take a walk outside in a safe environment with preschoolers. Encourage them to collect flowers, leaves, grass, rocks, and pebbles. (Provide small paper bags for collections.) As you walk, remind preschoolers of all God made: sun, sky, daytime, leaves, trees, flowers, rocks, and dirt. Kid Connection: Show the teaching picture and ask a child to identify items that God made; thank God for making the world. 3 Clean Up Learning Centers Give boys and girls a five-minute warning before beginning cleanup time Minutes Play a song from Music and More for 3s Pre-K Enhanced CD that will encourage children to help straighten the room. 7 4 Connect the Bible with Kids Through Group Time With 3s, shorten group time to about 5-10 minutes. Also use only the bolded portion of the Bible story. Materials: Bible; Pack Items 1, 17, and 18; nature items (rocks, leaves, sticks, etc.); objects that are used in the daytime or nighttime; Music and More CD; CD player Minutes Pretend to be items from nature. Place on the floor in front of your chair some of the nature items you collected. As preschoolers gather for group time, ask them to identify the different things God made. Say: God made leaves; let s pretend to be a leaf. Encourage children to stretch up high and move their arms and hands as they flutter like a leaf. Then say: Let s be a rock or stone. Suggest to preschoolers to get close to the ground. Now let s be a stick or branch. Guide preschoolers to stand straight and tall. You may want to repeat these actions or add others. Remind preschoolers that God made a beautiful world. Sing a song to make life application. J Sing the first two verses of the song God Made a Beautiful World (track 1). As you sing each verse, share with the children that they can thank God for the beautiful world He made for them. Remind preschoolers: God made the world. Hear the Bible story. J Open your Bible to Genesis 1 and say: Our Bible story today tells about when God made the beautiful world. Listen to hear all the different things God made. Share the story in your own words. Recall the Bible story and pray. Show the teaching picture and ask children to point to specific items ( Where is the tree? and so forth). Tell preschoolers again that God made these things. Pray with the group, thanking God for the beautiful world He made. Find the Bible phrase and read a book. J Open the Bible to the marker and read the Bible phrase. Read the book God Did to the children. Encourage preschoolers to look at the wonderful things God has made. Play a guessing game. Using the teaching picture, ask prekindergartners to identify something you are describing. Say: I see something that is green and covers the ground. What is it? Continue, describing several items in the picture. Play Night and Day. Place objects on the floor and ask preschoolers (one at a time) to tell if a specific object is used in the daytime or nighttime. Continue this game while waiting for parents or ETC teachers. J If you have limited time or teaching staff, consider using these activities to achieve today s Bible teaching and life application. March 7, 2010 God Made a Beautiful World Genesis 1:1-19 The Bible says that before God made the world, there was nothing nothing except God. God decided to make the world. God said, Let there be light. And the light began to shine! Then God made day, a time for the light to shine. And God made night, a time for the darkness. Next God made the sky and water. Water was everywhere. God said, Let there be dry ground. And that is exactly what happened. The water was put into oceans. God called the dry ground land. God knew that people and animals would need food to eat. So God made grass, plants, and trees to grow on the land. God made some trees to grow fruit like apples and oranges. God made plants to grow in the dirt. God made some plants to grow vegetables like corn and squash. God made the sun to shine in the beautiful blue sky. God made the moon to shine in the sky during the nighttime. God also made twinkling stars to shine in the nighttime sky. God saw the sun, moon, and stars. God saw the land, trees, and plants. God thought it was all very good. God was happy with everything He had made. Family Connection Utilize the March Parent (enhanced CD) to share with families the focus of creation for the next three weeks. 13
