The Portal - Dream On by Bali Rai Producent: Tove Jonstoij The Portal. Dream on by Bali Rai. Football... some people don t care, but many do. For Mollie it s a true passion. MOLLIE: Football means to me: It s not all about what you can do on the pitch. It s about what you feel for it, if you re willing to have the right attitude. You ve got to always keep your dream alive. Attitude and passion is probably more important than skill BALI: When I was younger I used to dream about, well, I played football almost everyday, on the park, on the streets, in school. We all dreamt of being spotted This is Bali Rai, he wrote the book Dream On. We ll meet both him and Mollie later on in the program. Now, what s so wonderful about football? Our reporter Pamela went to see Chelsea play Everton and asked some of the supporters.
PAMELA & Chelsea supporters: - Have you ever dreamt of becoming a professional footballer? - Every now and again, yeah. - Why? - Money. - What s the best thing with football? - Not that I score many goals but when someone in your team scores goals. - Why do you think that people love football so much? - I don t know why it s popular. It s just that a lot of people like it, and I like it, because it s fun to play and fun to watch. It s good. - You know, a whole stadium of people just singing together. - Yeah, I joined in it there - You did? -Yeah. Come on Chelsea! In the book, Dream On, we meet Jit, which is short for the Indian name Baljit. He loves to play football and dreams of becoming a professional football player. But his father thinks he should stop dreaming, study harder and work more in the family s fish and chip shop.
OLIVER BEE READS FROM THE BOOK: Do I have to work in the shop today, daddy-ji? I asked my dad. Man, I hated working in my old man s fish and chip shop. It was boring and smelly. And oily too. Loads of kids from my school came in and all I ever heard from them was: Chips an curry sauce mate. When I was younger, it was quite funny, being asked for that all the time. But after a while, it just got on my nerves. This is how we are making money, my old man would say to me in his own peculiar brand of English. Those trainers you are wearing were paid for by fish an chips. Knowledge is power, Baljit. He believed that education would make me a better man. That, and getting oily, and sweaty, and smelly in a chippy. I wished he d call me Jit for short, because I hated Baljit, but my old man would rather not speak to me at all, than call me by the name all my friends used. I enjoyed working in the chippy as a kid. It was like a great big adventure and my dad was the action hero. I remember seeing tanked up blokes coming in calling my dad all kind of racist names and he would just smile and take their money. It was when I started getting in to playing footy that I began to mind working in the shop. I got to stay behind after school for practise on Wednesday nights and was allowed to play for the school team on Saturday mornings, but nothing beyond that. My two best mates, Dave and Mo, played with me for the school team. They also played Sunday league games for the local side, which had really good links with the talent scouts, from major clubs like Leister city and Aston Villa. They went to more practise sessions than me, and played more games. I wanted to do that, but my old man told me I was silly. You re playing one night a week and Saturday morning. That is enough.
But dad, I wanna play more games, like Mo and Dave. I love playing. It s not like I m out stealing cars and taking drugs every night. I just wanna play football. And I just wanna pay the bills, innit? You wouldn t complain if I ended up signing for Liverpool, would you? I never even see one Indian playing in the football; they don t let us into the teams in it. Only because people like you, stop people like me having a go! MOLLIE: Basically my job is to get everyone up for the game and just get everyone in a good positive attitude. Mollie plays for top club Tottenham Hotspurs Under 16 Team. She is a defender and she s also the captain of the team. As a captain she tries to motivate everyone to do their very best. MOLLIE: and we talk about what we re, like, what we re here to do. We re here to win. And if someone s not doing something they should be, I don t talk to them in a rude way, I just say trying do this, trying do that, because I don t get everything right either. You ve got to find something that just keeps everybody going, because if one player drops her head, the whole team, it s just going
to...so you ve got to, you ve got to just trying to keep everyone s hopes up, even if you are losing the game, because until that end whistle goes, that s when you can, you know, stop trying to motivate everyone. I don t think you can truly understand football until you ve lost a major game, because you need to feel all the emotions. Winning a game is obviously the best feeling, but you need to experience losing a game as well, because you need to understand that you win some and you lose some, you can t win everything so MOLLIE: My parents. They don t push me, like, my dad is always saying to me: The minute that you stop feeling something about football, don t play!. But I ve never stopped feeling, so I m still playing, but... It s where your mind is, if you re not emotionally attached to the game, then I don t think there s a point in playing, because then you re just playing for the safety, not actually playing to achieve anything so Mollie goes to a school that specializes in sports. Recently, her school team won a competition and now they are the best school team of their age in England. Soon they will go on a football trip to Chicago, in America. There people will watch them play and they might be offered scholarships to American universities.
MOLLIE: It s a once in a lifetime opportunity, you know, to say that you ve been to America. You ve got a scholarship. But it s hard work, but it s worth it, yeah... TOVE: What will happen there? MOLLIE: We re there for six days, and we re going to be training hard, you know, eating all the right food. And on one day we ve got a tournament: our team is going to play other teams, and there s going to be scouts there, and then, if they think you re good enough, we ve got sign contracts and then when we re eighteen years old, we stay out there until we re twenty-three to twenty-six years old. But yeah, that probably and then we ll go to university over there, they pay for everything, so, that will be the best thing, if I get a scholarship Obviously, it s going to be the hardest leaving my family, but if you re going to make something of you re life you ve got to, right, be willing to drop some stuff. But I m doing it for them as well, so it s not just for me, it s for everyone in my family also yes I It s got to be done really Good luck with that Mollie! Now we go back to Baljit and the book Dream On.
OLIVER READS FROM THE BOOK (p. 12): Ever since I started playing football I always had this dream of becoming a professional footballer playing for Liverpool. I ve loved them since I was a kid. But as soon as I started dreaming about what might happen in the future, I remembered my old man. There was no way he d let me be a professional footballer. He wanted me to become a lawyer or a doctor. These are the good jobs, Baljit. Never mind the football. If you dream it must be for real. Why can t you dream about these things that really matter? That was his usual reply. One day Jit goes to a football trial in secret. His best friends Dave and Moe go too. About 30 lads are there to show off their skills. By the pitch there are coaches from different teams watching the players. OLIVER READING FROM THE BOOK (p. 47): The coaches started an eleven-a-side game on a full-sized pitch with the players that were left out waiting on the sidelines. Every ten or 15 minutes one of the lads playing was pulled off to allow another one on. I was waiting to go on, and trying to catch my breath after the last skill test. As I watched Dave tear our teams defence apart, I smiled. It was wicked to see my best mate doing so well. (p. 48): Along both sides of the pitch were various blokes with clipboards making notes about some of the lads. There were about 20 of them, all wearing tracksuits and watching the game really closely.
When I looked back at the pitch, Dave let fly with a shot from about 20 yards out. It flew into the top corner and he turned and did a little was dance, a big grin all over his face. Then one of the other lads jogged off and I got a tap on my shoulder from one of the Leicester coaches. Baljit, your turn, son. BALI RAI: - I think, if I would have told my mum when I was young: I want to be a writer, she would have said: make sure you use something else as well, because it s quite difficult to be a writer, so - But you didn t tell her? - No, no, to be honest, I just, kind of, did what I was doing anyway, I just got on with it so Bali Rai became a writer without asking his mother s permission. He thinks that Baljit s parents are pretty much like all parents. They just want to help their children and teach them about the facts of life. BALI RAI: - I think what his father is trying to educate him about is, this idea that money doesn t grow on trees, that, you know, and he says to him at one point: You don t like the fish and chip shop, but everything you have was paid for by fish and chips, those football boots you are wearing, were paid for by fish and chips. And he is trying to get that into his head, something that my dad did
when I was younger and my mom s done ever since, well she does it even now, I m thirty-seven, you know. I bought a new television and I told her about it, and she said, you know: Money doesn t grow on trees, you know, Did you really need a new television? It s just, I think it s a way of helping their children survive in what is a quite, a very materialistic world. - But, how did you come up with the idea to write it in the first place? - I don t know. I just, I wanted to write about football, but, when I was younger I used to dream about well, I played football almost every day, on the park, on the streets, in school for various teams, you know, local youth teams and I just thought, we all dreamt of being spotted by the scout for, you know, whichever team we supported, I was a big Liverpool fan so in my dream I used to image I m playing and somebody from Liverpool sees me play and they say: Come and play for us! Come and train with us! And that s what it was about. And it was about dreams and how people often give up on their dreams, they often, kind of well, they think I m not gonna achieve my dream, because it s far too, it s too far away in the distance, it s going to be too hard to get to. And the book was a way of saying, you know: if you believe in yourself and if you put the work in, and with a little bit of luck, you can achieve anything you want to, but you have to dream!, you know. And you ve got, the father, in the book, tells his son: If you have a dream, make sure it is realistic, whereas, the son is saying to his father: Why does it have to be realistic? Why can t I just dream, even if it doesn t come true? At least I can have a dream. So, that s kind of what it s about.
