Students are expected to be aware of any additional course policies presented by the instructor during the course. Catalog Course Description (include prerequisites): The cosmetology instructor training program is a 750 hour program which prepares students in lesson planning, class presentation and clinical management. Upon completion, students will be awarded a certificate of completion and will be eligible to apply for the state examination. Prior to enrolling in a student instructor program, the applicant must produce a high school diploma or its equivalent, hold a current operator license and complete a successful interview with the program director. A demonstration of professional skills and a philosophy consistent with the program direction are also prerequisites to enrollment. Space in this program is limited. Students are encouraged to apply early. All subjects in this program are based on SCANS and foundation skills competencies. Required Textbook(s): Milady's Master Educator edition. 2 Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, with emphasis on skills, experience, technique, understanding and appreciation in the area of cosmetology, the student instructor will be able to: 1. Maintain and use the notebook of instructional lesson plans: method of instruction, assignments, and evaluation. 2. Explain no stem, half stem, and full stem pin curl placements. 3. Demonstrate the comb out of each of the different curls. 4. Demonstrate stand up curls and explain the different positions a stand up curl can take. 5. Explain and demonstrate three types of roller placements. 6. Explain how hair length and size roller affect a comb out. 7. Define and demonstrate back combing. 8. Explain and demonstrate the finishing steps to a hair style. 9. List and describe the seven facial shapes. 10. Explain the different profiles, nose shapes, and how to correct each. 11. Practice sanitary and safety measures in this service. 12. Use professional terminology when teaching hair styling. 13. Observe and assist student operators in the use of different roller placements, pin curl placements, and finger waving. 14. Explain the importance of finger waving in hair styling. 15. Demonstrate how to blow dry hair. 16. Explain how to select different styling aids before blow drying the hair to help in styling and preventing damage to the hair. 17. Explain the proper temperature for the different textures of the hair. 18. List and explain the different parts to the curling iron. 19. Demonstrate the necessary position in manipulating the curling iron. 20. Demonstrate and explain the different curls made with the curling iron. 21. Explain how to test the temperature of the curling iron. 22. List all safety precautions when performing the iron curling service. 23. Practice professional sanitary and safety precautions in demonstrations. 24. Use only professional terminology when teaching. Lectures & Discussions: Evaluation/Grading Policy: Student instructors will be evaluated on the following: Notebook 30% Class Preparation (video, overhead, charts & handouts) 10% Class Participation (assigning weekly duties, interaction with student learner) 20% Professional Appearance 10% Competency Tests 30% TOTAL 100% Student instructors must make a minimum grade of 75 on a written objective test. Student instructors must accumulate 750 hours in order to take the state instructor licensing examination. New TDLR rules allow instructors with two years of verifiable experience to
3 accrue 500 hours of training; however it is advisable to continue training up to the 750 hours if the instructors believe the instructor student is in need of further training. There are limited opportunities for student instructors to make-up hours that are missed. Therefore, the importance of attendance cannot be overemphasized.. Other Course Requirements: I. Conduct of Course Attendance Policy-Regular and punctual attendance at all scheduled classes is expected and is necessary for successful completion of the course work. Excused absences may be permitted at the discretion of the instructor for illness, official college activities, or personal emergencies An instructor student may drop a student for excessive absences in a course; every attempt will
4 be made to notify the student before this action is taken. Special Requirements required of instructor students: Regularly attend classes & notify instructor if going to absent or tardy All instructor students must go through freshmen skills training with the operator students, so that it is certain that skills are correct, to ensure the instructor student assists the operator expertly when needed. Professional clothing and footwear that is appropriate for an instructor in the field is required. Lab coat, enclosed low heeled and comfortable shoes, and hair style & makeup (if appropriate) are required of all instructor students. Tube tops, sleeveless blouses and tank tops are prohibited. Name tag is to be worn stating the students first and last name, and that the student is an instructor student. Observe the student and instructor interaction daily, learning how to pattern the same behavior as well. Assist the operator student only after having learned from the instructor the skills needed by the operator student. Avoid the use of cell phones, horseplay, inappropriate language, distasteful jokes, and /or negative comments. Maintain a close working relationship with the instructional staff at all times, promote an attitude of maturity and appreciation for the business of cosmetology and the educational process. The role of the instructor student is to learn the many important components of being a professional cosmetology instructor, which involves many parts. A student instructor should not fraternize with the cosmetology operator students to the point where the student does not hold the instructor student in a high regard. The instructor student must learn behavior patterns and observe instruction that is key to the success of the student instructor in a short amount of time. The instructional staff will closely monitor the interactions between the student instructor and the cosmetology operator student in order to train the instructor student in the most professional manner possible. Student Responsibilities/Expectations: Students are required to clock enough hours each semester to complete the cosmetology course in the Fall, Spring and Summer semesters. In order to clock the 750 (or 500) hours required by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations in this time frame, regular and disciplined attendance is required of each student. The student is responsible for keeping up with their equipment, implements and all working or personal supplies. If the student is absent or has decided to drop from the course, he/she must take supplies home immediately as we are not responsible for these items. It is the student s responsibility to drop themselves from the cosmetology department through the admissions office. NTCC Academic Honesty Statement: "Students are expected to complete course work in an honest manner, using their intellects and resources designated as allowable by the course instructor. Students are responsible for addressing questions about allowable resources with the course instructor. NTCC upholds the
5 highest standards of academic integrity. This course will follow the NTCC Academic Honesty policy stated in the Student Handbook." Academic Ethics The college expects all students to engage in academic pursuits in a manner that is beyond reproach. Students are expected to maintain complete honesty and integrity in their academic pursuit. Academic dishonesty such as cheating, plagiarism, and collusion is unacceptable and may result in disciplinary action. Refer to the student handbook for more information on this subject. This College will adhere to all applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and guidelines with respect to providing reasonable accommodations as required to afford equal educational opportunity. It is the student s responsibility to arrange an appointment with a College counselor to obtain a Request for Accommodations form. Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (Ferpa): The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. The law applies to all schools that receive funds under an applicable program of the U.S. Department of Education. FERPA gives parents certain rights with respect to their children s educational records. These rights transfer to the student when he or she attends a school beyond the high school level. Students to whom the rights have transferred are considered eligible students. In essence, a parent has no legal right to obtain information concerning the child s college records without the written consent of the student. In compliance with FERPA, information classified as directory information may be released to the general public without the written consent of the student unless the student makes a request in writing. Directory information is defined as: the student s name, permanent address and/or local address, telephone listing, dates of attendance, most recent previous education institution attended, other information including major, field of study, degrees, awards received, and participation in officially recognized activities/sports. Other Course Policies: The cosmetology course is designed to train individuals to be able to enter the field of hair dressing upon receiving their cosmetology license. In order for a student to be completely ready to enter the world of the salon, student must display a professional maturity and appearance, which is required during training throughout the course. For this reason, a Student Stylist Handbook of Professional Integrity is issued to every student. The guidelines within require students to dress in a professional manner, and behave in a professional manner. Failure to abide by these guidelines will accrue students merit points, or lack of abiding by the guidelines will cause students demerits. Merit points can be awarded by positive behaviors, and good attendance for instance, and demerits can be applied for poor outward behavior, lack of professionalism, poor choice in communication-foul language, inappropriate language, etc.
