1 NEWSLETTER 21st October 2015 Dear Parents, LETTER FROM MR MAY Last week was certainly a quieter week in school with many of our Year 5 and 6 children out at Stubbington residential or Runway s End but how nice it is to have them back again! I managed to get down to Stubbington on the Wednesday to see the range of activities going on and was really impressed with the facilities, variety of activities and levels of engagement from the children. I know Miss Collis and the staff were hugely impressed with the behaviour of all of our children! Well done, Mayhill! This week, staff also had an additional training session on the progression of programming skills that now forms a large part of our Computing curriculum. Whereas the teaching of IT used to be based around presentations, word processing and video editing, all year groups will be learning how to input algorithms that create games and animations. The name of program we use is called Scratch. For more information you can click on and from there, children AND parents can have a go together! Parents Evening Our next parents meetings are on Wednesday 4 th November and Thursday 5 th November. You will have already received a letter and your appointment will be confirmed by the end of this week. Please remember that appointments are made on a first come first served basis. Can I also remind parents, as per the advice at the Curriculum presentation, that teachers will not be giving accurate assessment judgements about your child in Reading, Writing and Maths as we are in transition to the new framework of assessment. Teachers will, however, be able to give an indication of whether they are on track to meet Age Related Expectations, below or above and more importantly, where their strengths and areas for development are and how you can support them at home. Inset Day the school will be closed on Monday 2 nd November for staff training. We will welcome the children back on Tuesday 3 rd. SCHOOL NEWS Cauliflower Cards Orders for Cauliflower Christmas cards must be returned to the Office by 3.15pm today. Cheques made payable to Friends of Mayhill. Book Fair The Travelling Book Fair will be open after school today, Thursday and Friday from pm in the school hall. It will also be open on Wednesday 4 th November and Thursday 5 th November at the same times. This is a great opportunity for you and your child to buy some great new books and earn some freebies for the children s classrooms and the school library. Please come along and have a look. Problem Solving, Communication, Team Work, Positive Attitude, Confidence, Creativity and Independence
2 Year 4 Come Dine with Your Child Year 4 parents are invited to come and have lunch with their child on Thursday 19 th November at 12pm. Please return your form to the Office if you wish to attend. Sports Event Reminder that tomorrow, Thursday 22 nd October we are welcoming GB Sprinter Rion Pierre, who will be leading a sponsored fitness circuit with all pupils. Please ensure the children have their PE Kit and trainers in school and hand their sponsorship money in by Friday 23 rd October. Thank You. Attendance We would like to keep you updated on a half termly basis with your child s attendance. On Friday, your child will bring home a printout of their session summary since the start of term. Please note that 1 school day equates to 2 sessions. Admissions Main round applications dates for entry into Year R, 3 & 7 September 2016 are as follows: Year Group Opening Date Closing Date Notification Date Year R & Year 3 01/11/15 15/01/16 18/04/16 Year 7 14/09/15 31/10/15 01/03/16 Please note that the closing date for Year 7 applications is 31 st October Stubbington Photo Viewing If you are unable to view the Stubbington photos on the website you are welcome to come and view all the photos from the week in the ICT suite on Thursday 22 nd October at 3.30pm. 3 AN EXCITING OPPORTUNITY HAS COME UP IF YOU HAVE A CHILD IN YEAR 5 OR YEAR 6. We have been selected by UK German Connection to take 15 primary students to Berlin for a Magical Christmas trip; they would be accompanied and supported by 3 teachers, support staff from UK German Connection and 5 Robert May s students from year 11. It would be the weekend of 12th and 13th December and Monday 14 and Tuesday 15th December. More details can be found here: The whole trip is funded by UK German Connection and we would just need a contribution of 50 per pupil. There would be visits to Christmas markets, craft activities with our primary link school in Berlin, as well as trips to see the famous sights in the city. The Robert Mays pupils would come into Mayhill Junior School in the weeks prior to the visit to teach some German phrases and give information about Christmas traditions. We would stay in a lovely hostel in the centre of Berlin. Mrs Sue Marsh from Robert May's will be leading the trip, accompanied by at least one member of staff from Mayhill and there would be a full parents information session next half term, assuming enough interest. If over half term, you think this is something your child would be interested in attending, please could you the office on adminoffice@mayhill.hants.sch.uk so that we have an early indication of numbers. SENIOR ADMINISTRATION ASSISTANT We are looking for an enthusiastic Senior Administration Assistant to join our Office at Mayhill. As part of the team you will develop and implement a comprehensive, effective and efficient administrative support service to the school. Ideally, you would have experience in a similar busy, customer facing environment, with excellent multi-tasking, administration, ICT and communication skills. The ability to prioritise and remain calm in a busy environment whilst maintaining a sense of humour is essential. 3 days per week 19.5 hrs per week pm Start January 2016, Closing Date 11 th November 2015 For further information please adminoffice@mayhill.hants.sch.uk Or visit ucationjobsjobdetail.htm?id=42526&swatch=
