1 Introduction to Wood Technology Course Summary Department: Career and Technical Education Construction Tech Learning Objective #1 Wood Characteristics and Defects Semester 1 Target(s) To Meet Learning Objective #1 Target 1: Understand how various wood defects (knots, warp, and splits) and wood characteristics (grain and density) effect wood project building procedures. Target 2: Understand how to work with wood defects (knots, warp, and splits) and wood characteristics (grain and density) when building wood projects..5 Blocks Learning Objective #2 Reading Drawing and Plans Target(s) To Meet Learning Objective #2 Target 1: Understand how to read plans (multiviews with top, right, and front views) for shape, length, width, and thickness of individual pieces of wood and how the project is assembled. Target 2: Understand why plans are necessary when building projects in the wood shop..5 Blocks Learning Objective #3 Create Bill of Material Target(s) To Meet Learning Objective #3 Target 1: Understand how to calculate board feet and square feet when filling out a stock bill. Target 2: Understand how to calculate the individual boards and total cost of a project using a stock bill. 1 Block

2 Learning Objective #4 Rough Cutting wood to length Target(s) To Meet Learning Objective #4 Target 1: Understand why it is important to rough cut lumber to length. Target 2: Use the chop saw to demonstrate knowledge of proper operating and safety procedures including margin of safety, wood supported properly, and safety glasses when rough cutting wood for projects. Learning Objective #5 Jointing Procedures Target(s) To Meet Learning Objective #5 Target 1: Understand how to joint wood for straightness and glue preparation. Target 2: Use the jointer to demonstrate knowledge of proper operating and safety procedures including margin of safety, push sticks, and safety glasses to start the squaring process. Learning Objective #6 Ripping Procedures Target(s) To Meet Learning Objective #6 Target 1: Understand how to rip wood to correct width and why ripping is used to build projects. Target 2: Use the Saw Stop table saw with fence to demonstrate knowledge of proper operating and safety procedures when ripping wood to width; including margin of safety, use of push sticks, guards, and safety glasses. 1 Block for demo and safety test, 2-3 Blocks for practice

Target 2: Demonstrate knowledge of gluing techniques when building wood projects..5 Blocks for demo, 1-2 Blocks for practice Learning Objective #8 Surfacing Procedures Target(s) To Meet Learning Objective #8 Target 1: Understand how to surface wood to correct thickness and why surfacing is used in the squaring process to build projects. Target 2: Use the planner to demonstrate knowledge of proper operating and safety procedures when surfacing wood to the correct thickness; including margin of safety, in and out feed table, and safety glasses..5 Blocks for demo and safety test, 2-3 Blocks for practice Learning Objective #9 Cross Cutting Procedures Target(s) To Meet Learning Objective #9 Target 1: Understand why squaring one end of each board is important before cutting it to length. Demonstrate how to square and check first end of each board using the table saw and/or the miter saw. 4 Learning Objective #10 Wood Joinery Procedures (butt, edge, rabbit, dado) Target(s) To Meet Learning Objective #10 Target 1: Understand the difference between butt, edge, rabbit, and dado joints and why or where these different joints can be used. Target 2: Demonstrate knowledge of changing the table saw blades and setting up for dado and rabbit cuts, Target 3: Demonstrate knowledge of dado and rabbits cuts. 1 Block for demo and safety test, 2-3 Blocks for practice Learning Objective #11 Lathe Techniques Target(s) To Meet Learning Objective #11 Target 1: Understand how to safely use the lathe to turn face plate and spindle lathe turnings. Target 2: Demonstrate knowledge to safely use the drill press and power hand drill to drill the correct size holes in a project. Learning Objective #15 Fasteners (screws, brad gun) Target(s) To Meet Learning Objective #15 Target 1: Understand how to safely use the pneumatic brad nail gun and understand why a nail gun is used in the assembly of wood projects.
