5 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY AUDIENCE This white paper is intended fr EMC custmers, partners, and emplyees wh are installing and cnfiguring EMC VNX, VMAX and XtremIO strage systems fr applicatins that interact with Oracle. PURPOSE The purpse f this paper is t prvide an verview f EMC AppSync and demnstrate hw its cpy management capabilities can be used fr backup, recvery, deplyment f test and develpment envirnments, reprting, and analytics. APPSYNC OVERVIEW EMC AppSync is a simple, SLA-driven, cpy-management applicatin that sits between Oracle databases and strage that utilizes the strage system s advanced technlgies t create and restre cpies f Oracle databases. APPSYNC ARCHITECTURE EMC AppSync uses a three-tiered architecture that cnsists f the fllwing cmpnents: Server The AppSync server sftware resides n a physical r virtual Windws machine. It rchestrates the creatin f cpies and maintains data abut each cpy it creates. Plugin AppSync installs lightweight plug-in sftware n hsts; AppSync pushes the plug-in sftware frm the AppSync server t the hst when a user adds the hst as a resurce. Prductin, Test, and Munt hsts are examples f hsts n which this plug-in can be installed. Upn cmpletin f the install, Oracle databases are autmatically discvered and displayed as databases that are available fr cpy management. User Interface The AppSync cnsle is web-based and has the same lk and feel as the EMC Unisphere interface. 5

6 DATA PROTECTION SERVICE PLANS Users prtect their data by subscribing Oracle databases t service plans. Tiered plans named Gld, Silver, and Brnze are included and wrk ut f the bx. Users can custmize these plans r use them as templates t create new plans. Figure 1: Service Plans Gld plans: Create bth lcal and remte cpies. Silver plans: Create remte cpies nly. Brnze plans: Create lcal cpies nly. Plan Phases AppSync service plans are cmprised f multiple phases. Sme f these phases can be enabled r disabled, as desired; mst phases can have their settings mdified. Figure 2: Brnze Plan phases 6

7 Phases in an Oracle service plan include: Plan startup: Sets a plan t run manually, r defines a scheduled recurrence and recvery pint bjective. Applicatin discvery: Discvers database bjects and layuts Applicatin mapping: Maps database bjects t determine the strage that is t be cpied. Pre-cpy script: Runs a specified script befre a cpy is created. Create cpy: Defines select Oracle ptins, such as whether the database is t be placed in ht backup mde, the strage type, and cpy expiratin date/time. Pst-cpy script: Runs a script after a cpy is created. Unmunt previus cpy: Unmunts any previusly munted cpy f the database. Pre-munt script: Runs a script befre a cpy is munted. Munt cpy: Defines a munt peratin, such as munting the cpy and adding the cpy t the RMAN catalg. Pst-munt script: Runs a script after a cpy is munted (e.g. RMAN backup). Unmunt cpy: Unmunts a database cpy. Data Prtectin Use Cases Operatinal Recvery Yu can create service plans t autmate the creatin f cpies t meet recvery bjectives, such as zer data lss and a recvery time bjective f minutes. Backup Yu can create service plans t autmate the creatin f database cpies, munt the cpies t an alternate hst, and then backup the cpies using RMAN; this remves any backup windw requirements and islates perfrmance impact frm the applicatin. RESTORE Restring a Database Yu can restre a database t a pint in time using AppSync s Oracle Restre wizard. Figure 3: Step 1 f the Oracle Restre wizard 7

8 Steps in the Oracle Restre wizard The fllwing steps are displayed in the restre wizard: 1. Select cpy: Select the cpy t be used fr restre purpses. 2. Restre Optins: Select t restre Data, Archive Lgs, r Data and Archive lgs. 3. Summary: Review yur selectins befre starting the restre. 4. Results: View the prgress f the restre and the final results. Restring Database Objects Yu can restre individual database bjects by using AppSync s Munt Cpy f Oracle wizard; this wizard cnslidates the steps needed t munt an Oracle database cpy, create an RMAN catalg entry, and then use RMAN t perfrm a restre peratin. Figure 4: Step 2 f the Munt Cpy f Oracle wizard Steps in the Munt wizard The fllwing steps are displayed in the Munt cpy f Oracle wizard: 1. Select cpy: Select the cpy t be munted. 2. Munt Optins: Select the type f munt peratin t perfrm and desired settings. 3. Summary: Review yur selectins befre starting the munt peratin. 4. Results: View the prgress f the munt and the final results. LIFECYCLE MANAGEMENT Repurpsing Wizard AppSync uses a Repurpsing wizard t create First- and Secnd-Generatin cpies. A First Generatin Cpy is a cpy that is taken frm a database, whereas a Secnd Generatin Cpy is a cpy that is taken frm a First Generatin Cpy. 8

Intentin: Create first generatin cpies, r first and secnd generatin cpies, and the site (lcal r remte). 2. Settings: Select phases (similar t service plans) and specify settings such as cpy ptins, munt ptins, and scripts t execute. 3. Schedule: Select t create the cpy nw r later, n a scheduled basis. 4. Summary: Review yur selectins and start r schedule the creatin f the cpy. Lifecycle Management Use Cases Cpies fr Develpment and Test Yu can create a cpy f an Oracle database fr develpment and test grups, r yu can create a master cpy and make it the respnsibility f the develpment and test teams t create their wn persnal cpies using the master cpy. Cpies fr Data Analytics/Reprting Yu can autmate the prcess f creating a cpy, munting the cpy t an alternate hst, and running analytics r reprts n the munted cpy. USE CASE EXAMPLES Data Prtectin Creating a Service Plan fr Operatinal Recvery An Example This plan will create a lcal cpy every hur, and keep up t 12 cpies. With the ability t rll frward, it will deliver zer data lss, a recvery time f minutes, and the ability t maintain a recvery windw f twelve hurs. Creating the Plan 9

10 T create a plan, g t Service Plans, click Oracle, and click Create. The Create New Plan dialg will be displayed; in this dialg select Brnze as a template, enter a plan name, descriptin, and click OK. Edit the Plan T edit a plan, click the plan name. Set the Plan Startup phase t recur every 1 hur with a Recvery Pint Objective f 1 hur. Figure 6: Plan Startup phase settings In the Create lcal cpy phase, deselect Place the database in ht backup mde and set the expiratin t always keep 12 cpies. Click Apply t save the changes. Figure 7: Create lcal cpy phase settings Creating a Plan fr Backup An Example This plan will be cnfigured t create a daily cpy f a database, munt and recver the cpy t an alternate hst, perfrm an RMAN backup f the cpy, and then unmunt the cpy. Creating the Plan T create the plan, g t Service Plans, click Oracle, and click Create. The Create New Plan dialg will be displayed. In the dialg select Brnze as a template, enter a plan name and descriptin, and then click OK. 10

11 Figure 8: Create New Plan dialg Edit the Plan T edit the plan, click the plan name. Set the Plan Startup phase t run every 24 hurs with a Recvery Pint Objective f 24 hurs. 13 Click Apply t save the settings. Subscribing t a Service Plan Prtect yur Oracle database in a few clicks by selecting the database, clicking Prtect, and selecting Subscribe t Plan and the plan that meets yur recvery bjectives. Figure 13: Oracle Databases Prtect ppup menu LIFECYCLE MANAGEMENT Creating Cpies fr Develpment and Test An Example T see hw AppSync can be used fr develpment and test, cnsider the next example. It creates a master cpy f an Oracle prductin database, and then allws testers t use the master cpy t create their wn persnal cpies. Creating the Master Cpy Select the prductin database, click Repurpse, select Create Repurpse Cpy, and cmplete the wizard as fllws: 13

Nte: T enable the Refresh buttn, yu must first unmunt the cpy. 18

19 Figure 24: Database cpies page CONCLUSION EMC AppSync is a simple, SLA-driven applicatin that is easy t install, deply, and cnfigure. Yu can use it decrease recvery times, remve backup windws, decrease develpment times by quickly creating cpies fr develpment and testing, and autmate the creatin f cpies fr data analytics and reprting. 19
