4 5 Forrest Hill Building Location.\\ Number 5 Forrest Hill is located on Forrest Road in central Edinburgh. The building is located within the city centre and is within two miles of the main halls of residence at Pollock Halls. The nearest railway line is at Waverley Station in the city Centre. The nearest bus stops are located on Forrest Road approximately 60 metres from Number 5 Forrest Hill. Numerous bus services stop on Forrest Road. Details of timetables are available from Lothian Buses, from their offices within the city and online from Persons with mobility difficulties arriving by vehicle can access Number 5 Forrest Hill from Forrest Road, Teviot Place, Chambers Street and Lauriston Place. 5 Parking.. Pay and Display Parking - See Location Map The closest City of Edinburgh Council pay and display parking is located on Chambers Street. Parking bays are clearly outlined. All parking bays are on a shallow gradient. There are a limited number of dropped kerbs around Chambers Street. Disabled Parking Bays.- See Location Map There is a single University disabled parking bay located within 200 metres of Number 5 Forrest Hill. Assuming availability, there is ample parking for blue badge holders within close proximity to the building. This disabled parking bay is located within the Old Medical School courtyard. There is good level access to the adjacent footpaths. The parking bay has a level paved surface. This parking bay requires a permit. The bay is not clearly outlined. University Car Parks - See Location Map. The closest University Car Park is located 500 metres from the building. This car park is located to the rear of Minto House. Footpaths leading from the carpark have a steep gradient. There is a disabled parking bay within this car park. The car park has a level paved surface. All parking bays require a permit. 6 Access route to Number 5 Forrest Hill Please note that all access routes leading to Number 5 Forrest Hill are not recommended for wheelchair users without assistance. Access Route 1. This access route starts from parking bays located on Chambers Street. Please note that Chambers Street is out with 400 metres of Number 5 Forrest Hill. From the parking bays, it is necessary to cross a road to the footpath outside the National Museum. Please note that there are limited dropped kerbs and crossing points on Chambers Street. All footpaths running along Chambers Street have a smooth surface and a moderate gradient. From the top of Chambers Street and to the side of the National Museum there is a controlled crossing point which leads to Forrest Road. From Forrest Road, there is access to the building via Forrest Hill which has a narrow paved footpath with a steep gradient. Access Route 2. This access route starts from the Old Medical School Courtyard. Please note that the Old Medical School is out with 160 metres of Number 5 Forrest Hill. From the courtyard entrance, there is a level paved footpath which leads to a controlled crossing on Teviot Place. From the crossing, there is access to Forrest Hill via a level paved footpath along Forrest Road. Please note that Forrest Hill has a narrow footpath with a steep gradient. Page 6

7 Building Entrances. Entrance 1.- See Location Map Entrance 1 serves as the main entrance and provides access to the Ground Floor of the building. Entrance 1 is located to the front of the building on a level concrete surface. Entrance 1 can be accessed via a long, steep, paved gradient from Forrest Road. The footpath leading to the entrance does not incorporate a handrail. The door at Entrance 1 is operated manually and requires a swipe card to gain access. The swipe card point and intercom are not within comfortable reach of a wheelchair user. Internal Access & Facilities. There is ample circulation space and good level access throughout the majority of Number 5 Forrest Hill. There are a limited number of corridors which incorporate steps. Doors within corridors are not held open but will permit the passage of a wheelchair and incorporate door handles at an accessible height. Student Services/ Graduate School Reception. Please note that the Student Services/ Graduate School Reception can only be accessed by steps. The reception is linked the intercom at the main entrance. The reception is located on the First Floor of the building. There is currently no level access to the reception. The reception is currently not equipped with an induction loop system. Kitchen.\ The kitchen area is located on the Ground Floor of the building within close proximity to the entrance. Circulation space within is good. Seating is available and tables have 700mm clear height underneath. Low-level lockers are located within the kitchen area. Tea prep facilities are fixed and not within comfortable reach of a wheelchair user. Page 7

8 Tutorial Rooms. There is good level access to all Tutorial Rooms. Tutorial Rooms incorporate sufficient circulation space for wheelchair users. The majority of Tutorial Rooms incorporate desks with 700mm clear height underneath. Doors to the Tutorial Rooms will permit the passage of a wheelchair and incorporate door handles at an accessible height. Robotics Lab There is good level access to the robotics lab. The robotics lab incorporates sufficient circulation space for wheelchair users. Tables within the rooms have 700mm clear height underneath. Doors will permit the passage of a wheelchair and incorporate door handles at an accessible height. First Floor Computer Lab There is good level access to the computer lab. The computer lab has ample circulation space. Tables within the rooms have 700mm clear height underneath. Doors to the computer lab will permit the passage of a wheelchair and incorporate door handles at an accessible height. There is a kitchen/ breakout area located adjacent to the computer lab. Tea prep facilities are fixed and not within comfortable reach of a wheelchair user. Page 8

9 Lifts.. There is a single passenger lift within Number 5 Forrest Hill.. Lift 1 There are emergency disabled call points adjacent to the lift on each floor. Lift 1 is located within 20 metres of the main entrance. Serves all floors within the building. This is an evacuation lift. Lift Features The lift call points and car controls are at an accessible height. The lift car controls are within comfortable reach of a wheelchair user. The external control panel does not incorporate braille markings. The lift has an alarm and emergency call point. The contrast between floor and wall surfaces fair. The lift incorporates an emergency call point. There is no induction loop system. There is an audible announcer. The lifts have a mirror on the rear/ side wall. The lift car interior has handrails. There is a visual floor indicator. The lighting level in the lift is good. Lift doors have pressure sensors. Stairs.. There are two main staircases and two dedicated fire escape staircases within the building. There are also several short flights of steps throughout the building The central staircase is located close to the main entrance. All floors can be accessed by stairs. The central staircase does not incorporate contrasting nosings. All staircases incorporate handrails to one or both sides. The staircase to the rear of the First Floor Computer Lab incorporates an Emergency Call Point. Page 9

10 Toilets.. Standard Male and Female toilets are located on the Ground, First and Third Floors. Accessible toilets are located on the Ground, First and Third Floors. Accessible toilets are located within close proximity to the internal lifts. The accessible toilets incorporate the following: All accessible toilets are left hand transfer There is sufficient manoeuvring space. There are emergency pull chords. Doors open outward. The width of the accessible toilet door is suitable for wheelchairs. There are suitable dropdown and support rails to assist transfer. The tap type is lever operation. There are coat hooks. The contrast between the grab rails and wall is good. The contrast between the walls and floor is good. The lighting level in the cubicles is good. Page 10
