2 Document Purpose This policy reflects the values and philosophy of Highfield Primary School in relation to the teaching and learning of Computing. It sets out the framework within which teaching and non-teaching staff can operate and gives guidance on planning, teaching and assessment. This policy should be read in conjunction with the scheme of work for Computing, which sets out in detail what children in different classes and year groups will be taught, the hardware they will use and the appropriate software for each year group. Audience This policy is made available to: All teaching staff; All non-teaching staff; School governors. A copy of this policy is available: From Mrs K Hutton (Subject Leader); In the Main Drive. Computing is a core subject in National Curriculum and is a cross-curricular skill. Throughout Computing there are 6 strands: Computer Science Handling Data IT Digital Literacy and Creativity General ICT skills E-Safety These strands are developed with reference to the New National Curriculum and Bolton LEA schemes of work. Our Vision At Highfield Primary School we aim to create an environment where Computing is integrated as part of all areas of learning. We endeavour to develop ICT capable children who are autonomous about when and how best to use ICT as a tool for learning across the curriculum. ICT is seen as an essential part of children s development due to the ever-changing technological advances to which learners are exposed to in both education and the wider world. We strive to encourage our children to exploit the benefits of ICT, whilst being aware of limitations, and to have secure e- safety knowledge. Computing at Highfield is an integral part of teaching and learning and a tool which is key in raising standards in Literacy and Numeracy, whilst also enhancing foundation subjects.

3 Aims To give all children at Highfield full access to each area of Computing. To ensure that Computing is a tool which is integrated fully as part of teaching and learning. To give all children full opportunities to reach the appropriate level in Computing as specified in the Computing National Curriculum. To encourage the use of a variety of I.C.T. equipment, including computers, laptops, IWB, digital cameras, I pads, voice recorders and photocopiers in order to support and develop other learning which is taking place within the classroom To develop Computing as a cross-curricular tool To build up children s competencies and confidence when working in Computing. To provide a range of experiences to develop skills across the 6 strands To ensure that all children have access to, and experience of, appropriate hardware and software and to enable them to achieve the highest level of competence and understanding To enable children to work together to share ideas and enjoy using ICT in the process of achieving satisfying outcomes Objectives To enable all children to use ICT with purpose and enjoyment To enable all children to develop the necessary skills to gain the benefits of ICT To plan and provide activities that encourage pupils to be autonomous users of ICT To enable all children to evaluate the benefits of ICT and its impact on society To create an atmosphere where ICT is valued and used with confidence

4 Outcomes for the pupil Knowledge To understand how to write and use algorithms. To debug and create programmes across a range of software To know the limitations of I.C.T. and when it is better not to use it Exchange their knowledge with others To be able to use the Life Cloud as a resource enabling the children to share and enjoy their learning. Understanding To understand the importance of E-Safety To understand the importance of reporting abuse, misuse and inappropriate materials and how to do so. To begin to understand the impact of new technologies on society To understand how Computing can be used to solve a range of problems. To understand how to research effectively and avoid plagiarism. Skills Handle the hardware with increasing confidence Continue to develop those skills when using a range of software Apply those skills in a wider range of contexts Review, modify and evaluate work as it progresses Curriculum and School Organisation In order to achieve these aims and objectives the teaching of Computing is organised: In a cross-curricular way to support and enhance: - whole school topic plans - individual subjects, especially English and Mathematics In units covering the 6 strands in order to develop the progression of Computing skills Within the Scheme of Work learning activities for Computing are sequenced to ensure progression and are taught in a variety of ways: Through direct class teaching to introduce a specific program or skill Through practical tasks using the appropriate hardware and software Through group activities so that children can interact with each other

5 By providing children with real experience in the practical application of Computing skills Through the use of the Scheme of Work which provides learning opportunities throughout the 6 strands It is enhanced by using Computing where possible for a specific purpose perceived by the child Implementation It is the responsibility of the Computing subject leader to: Provide leadership and vision Update the Computing policy Carry out the requirements of the Computing curriculum development plan Monitor the delivery of the Computing curriculum as well as learning objectives taken from the Computing Statements (Bolton) and new National Curriculum, advising the Headteacher on any action needed Organise appropriate INSET and PDM meetings Provide an overview of the hardware and software provision, enhancement and replacement Support colleagues in their planning, the implementation of the Curriculum and in assessment and record keeping activities Maintain a file of evidence, recording a range of Computing activities throughout school Internet Access The Internet is a natural tool for staff and pupils and is integrated into everyday practice. Internet access at school is filtered through the Local Authority system. Access is strictly monitored by members of staff. Pupils are supervised at all times and, where practical, sites are vetted before they gain access. Planning, Progression and Differentiation The Computing curriculum is organised using the National Curriculum objectives for each Key Stage and the Bolton LEA I can Statements and these are differentiated accordingly. When planning teachers should take into account: The age and ability of the their class Grouping, organisation and active involvement Available equipment to enable first hand experience where appropriate Relationships and discussions Cross curricular elements of Computing

6 Assessment tasks to inform future planning Recording procedures Availability of resources, both human and material Assessment and Record Keeping Assessment of skills and capability are carried out at the end of Units of Work and recorded in the Computing Leadership folder on MAIN. Attainment is recorded for each cohort. This information is monitored on a regular basis by the Computing coordinator. Special Educational Needs All children should have access to a broad and balanced curriculum that includes Computing and should make the greatest progress possible. Provision for children with SEN in relation to Computing is the responsibility of the class teacher, support staff and SEN Co-ordinator as appropriate. Computing especially provides a means where children with SEN are able to present and develop their work easily and with improved self-esteem. Software and hardware provision will be reviewed and purchased when required, to ensure children with difficulties reach their full potential. Children who are exceptionally able when using Computing will be given the opportunity to access the curriculum are appropriate levels. Equal Opportunities All teaching and non-teaching staff at Highfield are responsible for ensuring that all children, irrespective of gender, ability, ethnicity and social circumstances, have access to the whole curriculum and make the greatest possible progress. Computing is an area of the curriculum where, because of its unique nature in requiring specific equipment, equal access needs to be planned and monitored very carefully. It is the responsibility of individual teachers to plan their pairs and groupings within the ICT suite and classroom so that this is achieved. Display The purpose of display is to: Value work, especially if the work is put up by or with the child present Provide a stimulating and interesting working atmosphere, where I.C.T. is valued Show good presentation and standard to aim for Motivate children Promote self-esteem and boost confidence Give information around a topic Give a point of reference

7 Resources Make a pleasant learning environment The subject leader for Computing is responsible for the purchase and audit of ICT software and will write a purchase plan in line with the development plan. They will liaise with subject leaders in order to purchase appropriate software and ensure that they are compatible with the school hardware system. Hardware consists of: Sixteen PCs in the KS1 I.C.T. suite Sixteen PCs in the KS2 I.C.T suite Eighteen laptops which are stored in the KS2 ICT suite One PC in each classroom, all of which are connected to an IWB A digital camera per class and certain other members of staff have one. Two digital recorders Microphones for each PC One colour and one black and white printer in the KS1 I.C.T. suite A colour photocopier in the PPA room A printer in the PPA room. A black and white printer in the KS2 ICT suite A colour photocopier in Year 5 shared area. Three PC s, three printers and a fax machine in the school office Health and Safety The general teaching requirements for healthy and safety apply in I.C.T, but importantly children are encouraged to close computers down and prepare them for use and no food or drink is to be consumed within the computer suite or in class where laptops are in use. The use of digital images and publication of children s work. At the start of Reception all parents will receive a form which asks them to give their consent for their child s photograph and work to be published onto the school website. Any image, sound file, word document or video uploaded to our school website will not be accompanied by a child s name. Highfield Primary School will not be held responsible for the inappropriate distribution of images. For the safety and protection of our pupil parents are advised not to share images taken from the website on social networking sites or in the wider community. Role of the Governors The subject leader will meet with the Computing link governor at least once a year, who will provide a report to present at a full governing body meeting. Review This policy will be reviewed in July 2015.
