1 Spring 2011 Trocaire Trends Hospitality Goes Hollywood Trocaire College Hospitality Director, Jim Carlo, is a seasoned professional who knows a lot about hospitality and culinary. He also now knows what it is like to be on camera... Carlo, and many of his students have been spending a great deal of time in the kitchen at the 6681 Transit Road Trocaire College location filming for the upcoming segments which will feature in Come Dine With Me WNY. Each segment features a different instructional method in the kitchen allowing viewers to become more educated about cooking. Topics include kitchen organization, knife skills, marinades and dressings, sauté and deglaze (chicken marsala), breading, deep frying and more! This was a really enjoyable experience for myself and the students, said Carlo. The students were really engaged throughout the whole process. The excitement in the department continues to build as time gets closer to the airings. Trocaire College and Key Video invite you to watch Jim Carlo and students of the Russell J. Salvatore School of Hospitality & Business on Come Dine with Me WNY every Sunday night at 10:30 p.m. beginning April 3, 2011 on WNLO CW23. Come Dine With Me is a 13-week television program hosted by Restaurateur, Russell J. Salvatore, designed to showcase the local food in Western New York. Check your local listings for more information. Visit to preview all the videos and visit to see all the photos from the shoot!
2 Message from the President This time of growth and expansion at Trocaire College is an exciting one. Over the past year our physical structure has expanded to include a second floor to the Russell J. Salvatore School of Hospitality & Business, adding much needed classroom space as well as a science lab. The student commons and courtyard at the main campus in South Buffalo were reconstructed and enhanced to provide an area where the college community can come together to socialize, exchange ideas, and interact outside of the classroom. We have grown internally as the college continues to experience an increase in enrollment, due in part to new program offerings in Dietetic Technology, Human Resource Management and our first Bachelor of Science programs in Radiologic Technology and Nursing. A shuttle service is now provided to our students at the main campus to alleviate crowded on-street parking. The college has hired a Web/Social Media Editor to grow and expand our online community be sure to take a look at Trocaire s blog and Facebook presence. A new and vibrant alumni board has been established to keep our alumni connected to the college. An office of Mission and Service was established dedicated to preserving, supporting and fostering Trocaire s Catholic mission and the values of the Sisters of Mercy. Most recently, an office of Workforce Development has been created to develop long term relationships between Trocaire and the business community. It is an exciting time to be involved with Trocaire College. With the continued support and commitment of our alumni, donors and friends, Trocaire will continue to grow, flourish and educate students in the Mercy tradition. Sincerely, Paul B. Hurley, Jr., Ph.D., President New Members Named to Board of Trustees Six new members were named to Trocaire s board of trustees. Each will serve a three-year term. On January 3, ten registered nurses began coursework in Trocaire s new Bachelor of Science degree with a major in nursing program. This unique program combines online instruction with on-campus work and is designed for adult learners who are looking to achieve more in their nursing careers. Hannah Genco, a student in the program, noted that the new bachelor s degree nursing program is a stepping stone to a better and brighter future. Structured for current registered nurses who already possess a diploma or associate degree in nursing, Trocaire s online program provides nurses with the flexibility to access courses at the time and place most convenient for them fitting coursework into their already busy schedules. Dr. Marian Meyers, Dean of Academic Affairs for Nursing Studies noted, A registered nurse with a bachelor s degree is ready to lead change and respond to rapidly changing health care settings and an evolving health care system. The BSN program at Trocaire provides a seamless articulation from an Associate Degree to a Bachelor s Degree. The ease of obtaining this advanced degree is facilitated through online courses, flexible scheduling, and incentives such as discounted tuition. 6 A message from the Alumni Board President... Dear Fellow Alumni, I was recently re-elected as president of the Alumni Board at Trocaire College. I must say that in the last two years we have held some exciting events, implemented new programs and have reached out to alumni both near and far. We have established a Mentoring Committee of alums who will work with current students on both personal and educational issues as they navigate the waters of higher education. In case you have not followed Alumni & Friends on the Trocaire website, read our blogs, or followed us on Facebook, let me recap some of the activities over the past year. We had five alumni board meetings in A Distinguished Alumni Reception was held in the newly-renovated commons honoring five individuals: Dr. Timothy G. DeZastro 74, Chief of Radiology at ECMC, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award; Linda M. Bain, RN 93, employed by Mercy Hospital was named the Outstanding Citizen of the Year; Monique Giambelluca Jarvis, LMT 05 was honored as the 2010 Emerging Business Leader; Christopher J. Moden, RN 01, ER Nurse Manager at Millard Fillmore Suburban received the 2010 Community Service Award for his coordination of services connected to the crash of Flight 3407; and Thomas J. Mitchell, RN 89 received the Humanitarian of the Year Award. Thomas is the Vice President for Academic Affairs at Trocaire. The board also sponsored a jewelry sale at Wear House Accessorized, A Night at the Races, the Bon Ton Community Day Program, and an Artisan Show to raise money for the Alumni Association Scholarship Fund. There was also a networking Happy Hour at Harry s Harbour Place and two Alumni Speaker Series events featuring a lecture on BioEthics presented by Kate Callahan, Ph.D. who graduated from the nursing program in 1974 and Richard Linn, Director of Planning & Research at Trocaire, who spoke about the early stages of Alzheimer s Disease. In addition to all of the great things that happened, I traveled to Florida to meet with alumni from around the state. As you can see, we had a busy year and tried to offer something for everyone. Your input would be greatly appreciated for future events. We are always looking for volunteers for the board, ideas for specific events to offer, or individuals interested in giving of their time to be a mentor. Please call or alumni@trocaire.edu if you are interested in participating in any upcoming activities. 7 Trocaire Alumna Shares Her Enthusiasm Five academic degrees and 28 years later, Patricia Adrian Matlock, RN, MS, CNM, OB/GYN NP, is still going strong. Her love of nursing, and an even greater love of teaching, has provided ample opportunity for Pati to impart her enthusiastic approach to learning, sharing, and nurturing. Pati has taught at Trocaire since 2002 and is currently a full time associate professor in the RN Program where she has developed and implemented a 4-credit hour maternal/newborn course. To her credit, Pati is also a certified nurse midwife, Lamaze childbirth educator and a certified Doula. After high school, Pati received an associate degree in medical transcription. In the early 80 s she decided to follow in her aunt s footsteps and enrolled in the nursing program at Trocaire. Her nursing career began in 1983 at Sheehan Memorial Hospital when it quickly became apparent that Pati had an affinity for maternity. After being certified for Lamaze in 1988, she began teaching early pregnancy classes, seven-week Lamaze childbirth preparation and oneday Lamaze childbirth prep classes. She continues to do so even now. In 2000, Pati recognized a need for labor and postpartum Doulas and established Caring Hands & Hearts Doula Referral Service. There are currently 10 women, including four Trocaire alumni, who Pati refers to local families desiring Doula services. OK so you may ask Just what is a Doula? The word Doula comes from ancient Greek meaning woman s servant or slave. This person provided support to a woman through labor and birth providing physical and emotional support. Today, Doulas are much more diverse than their predecessors. However, Doulas do not replace medical staff nor do they perform clinical or medical tasks. Most importantly, the Doula supports the mother and her partner as well as other members of the family. To list Pati s experience in the field of Midwifery, Lamaze, training and teaching would take more space than available. She has always been most gratified with being able to share her love of nursing by teaching and training individuals who seem to have the same desire to serve the needs of others. Pati also finds time to volunteer on the Trocaire College Alumni Board, serve as chair of the Security Advisory Committee and member of the faculty senate, is a member of eight professional organizations, and has lectured and appeared on numerous television programs as well as being featured in area newspapers and magazines. She has also co-authored articles in the Journal of Nurse-Midwifery. Pati s career accomplishments make her very proud, but nothing compares to her most important job of having raised four children; one being a chef, two are teachers and one is a nurse. Pati resides with her husband Steven in Hamburg, NY. Send us your address so we can keep you informed of college and alumni activities. Because of Trocaire s refresher course, I was able to go back to regular medical nursing after 31 years of psychiatric rehab nursing, homecare and hospice. Sharon McHenry, RN 69, The Villages, FL I am presently working at Sheehan Health Network as a mammography-qa Supervisor in Radiologic Technology. Sheehan was one of my clinical sites when I was a Clinical Instructor for Trocaire in the early 90 s. I am also employed as a per diem RT at St. Joes, which was also a clinical site for me. I was previously employed at Mercy as a Charge RT, Southtowns Radiology as an RT-Mammographer and, of course, Our Lady of Victory which were the best years of my career. Debra Brosius Chavel, RT 76, Hamburg, NY After graduating in 1971 from the nursing program, my daughter Kathy also decided to attend Trocaire and graduated in I now have five granddaughters, two of whom are thinking nursing also. Carol Whitton, RN 71, Hamburg, NY Retired Nurse Practitioner after 39 years at Mercy Hospital. Co-director of the Belfast Summer Relief Program bringing year old children from Northern Ireland to spend summers with local families over 1,600 to date. My proudest accomplishments are my children and grandchildren. Maureen Leary Fecio, RN 68, Buffalo, NY I am an RN at Mercy Hospital in the cardiac step down unit. I first enrolled and graduated as a business major in 1989 and in 1993 I graduated as an RN. I received both my BSN & MSN from Daemen, but would have definitely attended Trocaire if they had offered advanced degrees. I was recently awarded the 2010 Distinguished Alumni Award for Community Service from Trocaire. Linda M. Bain, RN 93, Buffalo, NY Although I did not graduate from Trocaire, I attended part-time from , moved to Albany, NY where I continued my nursing education at Maria College and graduated in My days at Trocaire were my inspiration to complete my education.
